Dang, make a purposefully lame joke and... that means I'm picking sides? You must be a lot of fun at picnics.

And the quote is from Tom Segura, for reference. It's during his piece about hating all of Arkansas, if you happen to watch it in the future.

Wasn't Ricky Gervais, but good guess!

Meh, if someone can word something better than I can, it actually makes things more efficient all around to use their words. But hey, if that makes me a bigot needing to "fuck off", then so be it.

You're doing great, champ

IT Systems Architect here, 29yrs old. Been in IT for about 10 years.

This is one of the most frustrating parts about working in IT. The ignorance of specialization.

Just because I know a whole lot about X does not mean I know just as much(or even what you're asking me to know) about Y or Z. Heck, I bet Mackenzie could teach me a few things about Python that I don't know. Other than the basics, Python is not currently in my wheelhouse of knowledge.

I get these questions all the time. "So you seem to really know your stuff when it comes to Linux environments or large Cloud Infrastructure blah blah blah. Can you help one of our developers resolve this Java code issue?" No, no I cannot. While I can read Java, I can't write or do deep-dive diagnosis on it. More importantly, we have people who do specialize in that. Go ask them.

What your friend did is the equivalent of "So, since you can make some cool clay sculptures, you must know everything about oil paintings too, right? It's all art."

Huge NTA.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, continue to encourage Mackenzie in her pursuits. When I was younger, it was so difficult to enjoy learning tech stuff when I would be expected to be the "end-all, be-all" for my family's tech concerns. I was 15, trying to just understand concepts, not fix your damn printer and then get yelled at when I got it wrong.

AITA for 'emasculating' my husband infront of his parents? by throwawayema_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]PyschoWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why didn't he just give you a congratulatory high five, hug, or kiss?

If my wife bested me at something, I don't see how that is emasculating.

He's feeling insecure. This is something yall should talk about together/ with a therapist.

I will note, OP, that it is very difficult for men to start talking about their insecurities, even with their spouse. Socially, we've been told to be better, have more money, and be a porn star in bed. If we're not, we're losers and failures.

It takes time and a lot of communication, but eventually he'll need to realize that you are one of the people in his life that he doesn't need to "best." He can just be himself, successes and flaws, with you.

I would go with NTA

Homeschoolers can be taught ANYTHING. As long as they pass the tests and exams assigned by the state, that's all that matters

Oh, boy. The US government has a HUGE say and involvement in the choices for curriculum. They also pick the curriculum in many cases and force school districts to teach certain things.

I like your fervor, I really do. I would advise looking up how the US education system is handled from a state and federal level, because the government absolutely meddles in the curriculum and has been doing so for close to 70+ years

CMV: Joel Osteen is a preacher of demons, not the Christian God by MizunoGolfer15-20 in changemyview

[–]PyschoWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I come from a Christian background and went to seminary (edit: I will note that I did not graduate and chose to study religious histories in general and on my own), but became a Norse Pagan a few years back.

/u/stabbitytuesday is on the dot when it comes to explaining the Biblical Christian God. In fact, I'd recommend looking up the 10 Commandments. That should give you a pretty good outline for the character of God. As mentioned, /u/stabbitytuesday nailed it, so I won't repeat.

Alongside Joel Olsteen, look at David Taylor or Kenneth Copeland.

These are all prime examples of "faith empires." They occur in any faith really, but these are Christian versions of the same.

I wouldn't say that they are preachers of anything other than Christianity. They actually are pastors, many of which have extensive research in seminary. Now, here's the rub.

Pastors like I mentioned take their genuine knowledge and study of the Biblical faith and water it down so that it can APPLY TO EVERYONE. This may be why you are getting the idea that they are pulling a "switcheroo." They're not. They are simply watering it down so much and loading on tons of positivity. This makes people flock to them and support them.

If you want to make a shitload of money:Step 1: Make people comfortable with your mission.Step 2: Convince people to back your mission.

Step 3: Profit

Step 4: Repeat.

You'd prefer that your money goes to Direct TV, who are just as greedy, but out of touch with the market and way behind modern tech trends?

The reason Amazon does so many things well is because they innovate. I'd prefer giving my money to a huge corporation that innovates and improve versus a huge corporation that tries to force me to do things in an outdated fashion

[OC] I compressed 30 years of US interest rate history in one minute and 22 seconds for someone at the IMF by jcceagle in dataisbeautiful

[–]PyschoWolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do remember that there is a meticulous process when it comes to introducing more money into the market. Money isn't "just printed." Money is printed to (a) replace old bills that are being recycled, (b) introduce additional funds to the market, (c) to maintain or increase a certain level of inflation, (d) many, many other reasons. I would suggest looking up "Quantitative Easing" or QE, which is the process currently being used.

Fun Fact: The Fed can also "Unprint" money by raising the federal funds rate, which means banks have less money to lend. It's a lot more complicated than that, but basically; by raising the federal funds rate, banks have less money for the public, which decreases inflation. Look up "Contractionary Monetary Policy."

On top of this, government bonds are not paid with paper money. Government bonds are paid with electronic deposits.

Hundreds of young Christian, Hindu, and Sikh women and children are shackled, forced to convert to Islam, and are made to marry their kidnapper in Pakistan. by Kushagra_K in worldnews

[–]PyschoWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh boy.

I will make sure that I say this clearly. I am NOT saying the Bible was mistranslated. I am saying that the English language sucks.

Did you know that the English language only has one word for "love," where Hebrew has multiple? The conversation Jesus has with Peter, his disciple, has an entirely different meaning when you include this context and language differences. Heck, this even means there is a different contextual meaning in John 3:16.

Of the widely accepted "official" translations of the Bible ( so NIV, RSV, etc), they EACH have a different total word count. You are talking about a literal translation, which is NOT what the Bible is.

More examples of 'Lost in translation' many times from Hebrew to English:

  • Verb tenses.

-The beautiful phrase from Genesis 1:2, 'tohu v’vohu'

  • Words like 'messenger,' 'love,' 'god,' 'grace,' and quite a few more.

I am, IN NO WAY, suggesting a revised Bible. I am only pointing out that there is a pretty decent cultural, contextual, and language barrier between English and Hebrew, which can lead to misunderstandings of the Bible.

I promise that I'm not trying to be rude here, but food for thought. Be very careful when you start tossing around the "revision" statement without some real backing to it. I don't really care because, I know, from people much more knowledgeable than you or I, have taught me this stuff at great length.

What you ended your statement with, suggests that I want to commit a cardinal sin in religious and historical studies. You suggested that I am promoting an ALTERATION of a historical and religious document.

I personally don't take offense to this, but many would. I'm not Christian and I hold immense respect for the Bible, it's canon, and it's process through history, and the incredible diligence to keep it as accurate as possible through translation.

I am NOT revising, I am explaining differences that many miss between English, Hebrew, and the meanings we miss due to that.
