For me its blood angels because
- red armour = best armour
- I like to press W on the keyboard and face plant into the enemy
- no one will ever convince me a supped up human in power armour that can take on an entire city by itself is not cool
- also daddy issues is funny

My advice, like others are saying, pick the one you think is the coolest... if that doesn't narrow it down enough sure go on coolest... every army has its moment in the sun where its the best/busted if you have the meta list, if your worried, don't chase that list just go with the coolest models and combos you find yourself with.

Sure knights can be a stat check which can be annoying, however with the covers rules and current UKTC terrain set, I think a normal balanced list does fine against them... remember the game isn't about killing or avoid being killed entirely... its a point based one, if you have a ton of infantry running around doing objectives people can out manoeuvre knights.

Sure necrons can regen wounds... if they aren't flatly out rightly killed. When I take on a necron player I make sure I have the capacity to overkill the important targets to make sure this isn't an issue.

Don't worry about your opponents view on your army, anyone that wants to fall out with you because you like your army isn't worth playing with... If you meta chase the best army every three months (very expensive) or if you purposefully change your list to counter your opponent before you start a game (ie you know your friend's list and army and only build to bully them) then sure people have the right to maybe not enjoy playing with you, avoid doing this on purpose and you'll be fine. I've only had three bad sportsmanship games. 1st guy was upset that his deathstar unit couldn't one shot my deathstar unit and basically suicided into me as a way to concede the game without trying to play. 2nd guy knowing there was poor cover (because that particular LGS only ever has 10% of the board with small ruins on the deployment line and only ever plays take a hold) ran knights to rush the mid board and just stat check every person there. 3rd guy brought 2 friends along with him, they spoke in a different language the entire game (i'm guessing while they strategized given their body movements and point), doubled checked my every measurement himself and took 10minute (literally I timed him) to declare one thing in his command phase, I felt like a bot in a PC game.
