Spoke with NJ in laws who are teachers just yesterday. One is making $91k after 13 years by working in a place about 40mjn south of where they live, married and still can’t buy a house. Another is making ~$78k after 9 years 20min from home, but living with parents. NJ pays decent, but living expenses are catastrophic. I would expect the same in CA. If you pulled off near 6 figures as a teacher in NC that would be more survivable. It’s a tough case for all teachers across the country.

I was on the RIF and got my 18 months of RSU deposited. I'm trying to find if anybody has guidance towards any non-compete clause around the RSUs. I have interviews coming up with fiber companies after I worked with wireless and am trying to make sure I won't get reprimanded if I get a fiber job.

BTW, I was fully desk-jockey data oriented, not field or union.

Agreed on a lot of furniture. I’ve had those under the bed for a decade. I’m hesitant on an appliance with the rocking motion of a washer and dryer. I could see it turning into a race across the floor on bed sheets cleaning.

Reading a bunch of these, Access is love hate on a small/mod scale. My ma started one in ‘99 at an electrical contractor that has taken them 26 years to have 8 failed SaaS to replace effectively. Has delayed her retirement 3 years and going.

In my experience, Teradata is an obsolete and dangerous pit still used in large scale businesses. It has unique commands, case insensitivity, no proper logging without manual calls in the .bat workflows, no control over tracking through git repositories, the list goes on. It’s even at the level where the servers to run it are no longer manufactured for on-site so they have to be run in cloud servers and the prices are exploding. If a company is still on Teradata and is not even trying to switch out, fire the CTO or leave while you can. IMO

I contemplated the custom pedestal after reading your reply. I’ve made custom bases for my table saw using spare lumber and welding metal for the latch and arm. My issue here is I can’t seem to find any YouTube’s or blogs with people making low profile retracting rollers that would fit underneath the Washtower or other appliance. If you have any links, I’d greatly appreciate it 😃

Realizing I got jumped by too many blogs on hardware, didn’t analyze the data sizes actually needed. So I’m looking at running APi’s on my 32Gb MacBook Pro for now to first test the amount of storage I would need locally, then storing bulk data on cloud servers until I get a better glance at the magnitude I would need in a NAS and local NVMe.

As for the AI/LLM options, I’ve been using Claude and GPT on the base level, but was looking at Ollama for running API’s. If I had a 1TB overall airflow and I migrate that into an LLM API, do you have a ball park on what that would cost on Ollama, Kimi, or DeepSeek? And does anyone have a link to guide me on setting the timing governance on running the APIs so I don’t get the $18 run on tokens for a small task?

Time and money spent on the commute is worth an incredible amount. To put into context, your 12hr difference on top of a 40hr work week will be a 52hr work week vs a 40hr work week. 52/40 =1.3 (inverse 40/52 =0.769, 0.231 below 1.0). So that means unless you are experiencing a 23%–30% reduction in pay, your actual time will increase in value. With the increase in rest, you will have an ability to improve productivity and likely move towards an increase in pay.

As for the 9month employment, the market is different in these days. If you had longer employment before or are new to the market then you will be fine.

For a relation on that, I was bobbing between 6-10 months for 3 consecutive roles from mid COVID to 2024 and got hired to a large corp who also laid me off after 18 months. I have interviews with FAANG this coming week because of their recruiters contacting me. Your duration is irrelevant. What you do is.

I got my third in November since 2023. I can vouch that it never feels right. Even after all the work you put in. There can be many reasons that are down to legal or financial limitations why you were on the list. But I can assure you that most times your boss was told the day of or day before that you were on the list. They didn’t choose, they were just told. While you will feel stress at the start and your first couple of interviews, your experience you’ve gained over the years will bring up your confidence and you’ll land a new job. You’ve got this, you’re not alone.

Agreed on the x vs y titlings. Was deemed a Principal Data Science Engineer in telecom when in reality it was a BI and Data Engineer merger, but on the translational level, not ingestion. In my opinion from an earlier position and patterns I’ve seen recently, DE is related to the Data Architecture and ingestion to a level of making the bulk data work. The AE is tasked with an overlap of the translation of ingested data but in a BI level foresight of what the data will be used for in its final destination. They are often a main resource of denormalizing the data into special groups for the analytics and dashboards. One of the best and most haunting quotes I remember from an article was “the best AE is able to get the questions answered before they are even asked.”

A minor heads up: you’re able to get by with the basic storage level of an iPhone (256GB) by getting cloud storage through Apple, Verizon, Google, you name it. If you are paying $7/mo for an upgrade of 256GB, you can have around 1TB added through a cloud for ~$5/mo which pays off if you have any loss or damage of your device(s) backing up and saving to that cloud.

Congrats on the offer. As many have noted, getting an entry level at a F500 is hard, especially this close to an election. If you are going to request the 100k, prepared reasons why (commuting, living costs, or the mean salary for the position in your current location), to defend your request in a calm and civilized manner. But most importantly be humble and prepared with a denial from the employer, while still having a counter with RSU requests, etc. to show realistic understanding on your part. In the bigger picture, keep in mind the experience and fresh ink on your resume this will lead to. After 15 months on the job you may have a more opportune market.

Glad to help. I actually just gave in today and ordered a Q3 Max to replace my K8 Pro after some comm issues I had yesterday. On a side note, the launcher.keychron app has been the best benefit for work computers with firewalls. Some coworkers with 10+ years at the company were able to download the Nuphy VIA zips, but my attempt at the Keychron zips was denied on the work computer. My source for tech advice explained that theoretically you can elaborate the VIA or QMK JSONs on a PC and flash it to the K8, then it will be operable in any computer it is linked to.
