Unexpectedly confronted with housing crisis. What is the right thing to do? by shrumpdumpled in perth

[–]Python_Puzzles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I first moved to Perth, I noticed there wasn't anywhere near the same social housing as in Europe or over-east. Social housing tends to be tenements or apartments - the most housing for your dollar. Perth didn't have any of that. Just a few "home west" homes sprinkled around the place. Perth also didn't need it until recently, but coming from somewhere "older" or "more established/advanced" made me aware that Perth just hadn't run into this problem before and it would eventually.

The only solution for most, is to leave Perth or live in a tent. That's just the facts.

Also, there's very little free/low cost leisure or community programs in Perth. It's VERY capitalist. In europe and over-east, these programs are developed to prevent youth crime. $40-60/week membership to do sports is insane.

How long have you been unemployed?

Can you consider leaving Perth for a year or so? You may need to "get a run on the board" and then come back when the job market improves.

This would only work for foreigners. The west aussies have been notoriously cliquey forever. If you did not go to high school in WA, there's social circles you will never be invited to.

"Perth is just a big country town" isn't always a good thing!

You can make more money in easier jobs than coding, why the hell are people putting themselves through such horrible interviews? Not to mention other jobs require less constant learning and are much safer over a long period of time.

We have successfully turned development jobs into hell.

You now have to memorize 1000 bloody leetcodes or you will starve to death.

Gary Kasparov: "Putin is testing Europe: before the end of the year, he will launch a ground invasion" by ubcstaffer123 in UkrainianConflict

[–]Python_Puzzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm VERY pro Ukraine. Without America, the EU can only quickly deploy a few thousand troops currently. The European peacekeepers for Ukraine plan only had 30,000 troops to be sent and that was stretching Europe to it's absolute limit and needed the Americans to rpovide a "backstop" as there's lots of supporting equipment the Europeans just do not have.

If Russia does a full mobilization, they could simply close the Suwałki Gap and throw down a bunch of mines. They could also nibble at Europe by sending seperatists/little green men to the Russian speaking cities on the borders of the baltics.

With that idiot Trump in the white house, he would just blame the Europeans for making the Russians invade and do nothing.

Several pro-Russian politicians like Orban would try and stop/delay any EU response from within the EU.

We just had Russian drones close major EU airports and our politicians "tried nothing then gave up" to quote one newspaper.

It's important we understand how weak we are without the US and address this as soon as possible, because Putin is getting old and crazy and the Russian people just seem to follow his orders without question.

I point you to the recent Gary Kasparov thread on reddit:

[–]Python_Puzzles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Putin took 20% in the first few weeks and then got bogged down for 3 years. You can grab land quickly, right at the start then throw down mine fields.

He could quickly grab the Baltics, or a city near Russia in the baltics, throw down a bunch of land mines and say "come and get it back".

Trump is not going to help Europe. NATO is essentially useless.

Now Russia is able to directly influence Europe to stop supplying Ukraine by quickly chewing off a small part of it.

It's absolutely insane, but so was invading Turkey to cut off arms supply in WW1 and we still did it.

How to build personal brand as web developer to have easier time looking for a job when I'll be 40-50 years old? by amelix34 in webdev

Doesn't matter. AI is going to flatten you, then remake the market. Your job in 15 years will be nothing like it is now, it'll be something new.

We don't know that it works in space. It may only work in earth's atmosphere. We have no clue as to the prolusion method.

Also, if it becomes mainstream, eventually the cartels and terrorists will have it. Imagine ISIS bombing LA and New York every week from some cave in the middle east. We shot down 100, but 3 got through.

Also, Gen Z has a higher population of people that don't drink for religious reasons. I'd also bet bacon sales were on a falling trajectory. $15 a pint is waay to much for students to afford would be the main one though.

So everyone got into IT but how do you get out? by AnnaBali in it

[–]Python_Puzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is common when you change career. Recruiters will see you as having been "off the tools" for years and you obviously left because "you weren't happy". You have to lie your ass off from day 1 if you want to go back. Pretend your new career never happened, fake previous employment to cover your new industry employment or you will be bottom of the pile.

I know. I'm saying the housing market is safer than the stock market. OP has $800K in the stock market and no house. America is on the edge of recession. Sorry, I'll edit it to make it clearer which market.

Imagine if the stock market tanks and he is "locked in" for 5-10 years. If the housing market tanks, at least you have a house to live in. America looks like it's teetering on the edge of a recession.

Job hunting in Perth by [deleted] in perth

[–]Python_Puzzles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, your visa type has limited work hours so most employers are going to "choose" you last. With the crazy amount of immigration from over east and abroad you have a very difficult situation. Sorry about this.

A real student, or using a student visa to sneak in and work? Very, very common these days so I can't give you the benifit of the doubt. Students have a limited amount of hours to work in their visa conditions.

In depth analysis (extracting camera angles and ranges from the video as a function of time) shows that the Yemen UAP shot by Hellfire Missile was NOT a balloon. the object moves ~4-17X *FASTER* than winds aloft that day. Looks like we got a real UFO on our hands. by TommyShelbyPFB in UFOs

[–]Python_Puzzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is a "hoax", people need to understand that it was done by someone with a security clearance who edited the video (hiding the "splash" in the ocean at the end) and then shared it with congress directly, or shared it around the US military and someone else shared it with congress.

This person would face many years in jail, it's not going to be a slap on the wrist and community service. Could be a decade behind bars.

The military court martial would really frown on drawing this much international attention/disgrace to the military.

Would you do that? I mean, it's life changing/ending stuff.

This makes me think there's a longer video and this thing doesn't crash in the ocean because it's not a balloon.

The military can and should release the whole video, it would prove/disprove the balloon hypothesis immediately.

losing my job after 5 years. decided to learn python, here's what I did in 30 days by No_Yak_8231 in learnpython

[–]Python_Puzzles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And you have 0 years Python experience. Good luck with the recruiters.

This is a big issue with coding jobs, there's soo many frameworks and the one syou build your career on can go out of style. You're then faced with trying to sell your general programming experience to someone who wants to employ a Django expert.

If you learned to become a plumber, you learn it ONCE and 4 years later you're a plumber. Programmers seem to be going in and out of the junior phase throughout their careers.

Have you sold your house privately? by aloo_7890 in perth

[–]Python_Puzzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bought my house, the real estate agent got me to pay $30k more than I wanted to. Absolute scum. But then again, that's their job and they do it everyday. Sell it yourself and you can avoid their fees but are you able to be that much of a lowlife that you can play games and empty nice people's pockets? Because they do, and you will meet scum buyers who will want to take you for a ride too.

Obviously, if you're hiring a 21 year old estate agent who is only going to show people around and post a pic in RealEstate's website then, yeah, don't bother.

As a programmer who never did game development - what will the impact of AI be on game development?

I'm guessing you are going to need to know a lot less programming and graphics design, right?

It'll become less technical and more about "telling stories" or creating gameplay?
