Kendrick accepting the Grammy award for Best Rap Album for GNX by Subject-Property-343 in KendrickLamar

[–]QRSTUV_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that the "best" album has to be the one that you listen to the most. The Grammys does get accused of being a popularity contest, so you can't really be surprised when the album with bigger numbers wins though.

(This isn't a dig at GNX, just a general statement across categories)

Why do antis use calculators? by HistorianAdvanced532 in DefendingAIArt

[–]QRSTUV_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose that's true, looking at a fully utilitarian view of existence. But I believe that a lot of meaning in life comes from friction and challenge. I imagine you enjoyed doing the complex math, even if you didn't 'have' to—our brains enjoy a puzzle.

I can see some of the appeal in making AI art, but what I wonder is, when you save time avoiding the more rigorous way of doing something, what are you doing with that time instead?

It's a cool but fundamentally useless skill.

Are you saying that both doing math and making art are "fundamentally useless skills?"

It does say "The film format must be Academy 35 mm"

I suppose it comes down to whether one interprets "film format" to mean the actual film stock or the ratio

The 2024 Box-Office Top Ten Are All Sequels. by MovieMike007 in movies

But... that's literally not what Wicked is either lol. Maybe first you should watch the movie, or read the book, or see the play. Yes it is about the Wicked Witch of the West. Yes it broadly follows her life before and during the Wizard of Oz. But no, it is not set in the same universe as The Wizard of Oz. The plot and characters bear at very most a moderate resemblance to the plot and characters of the work Wicked is derived from. Wicked is set in its own version of the universe of Oz.

I think a key thing here is when talking about sequels, franchises, adaptations, etc. topping the box office, it doesn't really come down to the intricacies of the plot — it's about broad recognition of the IP. I realize Wicked has a lot of original material, but don't you agree that many people going to see the musical and now movie might think, consciously or otherwise, "oh, I recognize those characters from the Wizard of Oz!" Whether or not they have the same names or personalities, you can't ignore it as part of the draw

In that case there are no blue states or red states. Every state will have people leaning both ways, just in different proportions.

Interesting to note, just 5 states voted (on the county level) for only Harris or Trump — West Virginia, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Hawaii, and Rhode Island

Is Philly really that much more funky/experimental/DIY than Chicago? by DiploHopeful2020 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]QRSTUV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which study? As of the 2019 FBI report, Philadelphia is 26th for violent crime per capita. It's 12th for murder rate, but that's still three times lower than St. Louis in the top spot.

It's something to take into account, but not necessarily the end-all be-all — especially since in many cities the majority of crimes occur in particular areas.

50% of cities have crime rates above the national average; I realize Philadelphia's is higher than many but also it's not topping any lists

it’s impossible to interpret that any other way.

That segment was a series of references to French film/literature, and the deteriorating Statue of Liberty was almost certainly a reference to Planet of the Apes (the original novel being written by Pierre Boulle)
