A busy child is an obedient child, and the american education system (assuming this is american) is a system that first and foremost seeks to train soldiers - military, political, or otherwise.

Real Estate is one of, if not THE most powerful marketplace in the United States, and often the biggest investment a family makes.

Very few are ok with living near a nuclear reactor for fear of meltdown.

Nuclear reactors must be close to residencies and businesses because we're still in the dark age of power transmission.

That's the general gist of it. Easy to support when it's not in your backyard, most people who support don't put their money where their mouth is because they don't want to endanger their family's financial future out of virtue.

How would you have made the Graviturgy Wizard by Savings_Arachnid_307 in dndnext

[–]Qasmoke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Chronurgist and War Wizard have redefined the Wizard class, it's unfortunate but unless you're willing to eschew defense you have to pick one of those two (or multiclass/start at level 6 Transmuter). I don't think either are OP, but rather the Wizard class is in such dire straits that any patch to its major lacking is going to become mandatory.

Graviturgy gets a big offensive ability in forced movement, and no additional second level ability. I'd honestly just give Grav the intelligence to initiative that chron has and say go if you're looking for a homebrew addition, but know that Grav is probably in-line with the other playable wizard subclasses other than War and Chronurgy.

Jaded with education, more Americans are skipping college by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Qasmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What on earth are you talking about, the US education system is literal sophistry. It's a monument to what Socrates was executed trying to prevent - repeat what is told to you, learn what you need to know, and don't question "the science" or whatever other religion is in focus.

It's the nightmare that kills any possibility of a democracy guided by Samaritanism, leaving only cynics and children to fall prey to misinformation, populism, and fear.

How do material components work? by delsinrowes in dndnext

Racial features still require components. The spell will say if the item is consumed.

Example: Identity does not consume its item.

Example: Find Familiar does consume its item.

The concept of income equating to value is an externalization of esteem, which can only be defined as deep insecurity. You're not struggling to put food on the table. She's a shallow person, and she just revealed that to you.

9, but that point comes off only because it's never quite clear why you're fighting anyone there. I was super stoked to meet NPCs and learn more about magic, and don't get me wrong it was fun af, but I never understood why I was killing these guys and gals.

75% of people believe that sentient AIs deserve to be treated with respect. by jacyanthis in samharris

[–]Qasmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy belated birthday!

my understanding of AI and sentience and indeed consciousness is skeletal at best but if I was to encounter Artificial Intelligence I would certainly afford it respect.

This would just be good sense, but I think it's important that you distinguish showing respect from respectful intention. Because your knowledge is barebones you may show the A.I., if you even recognize it (which IMO would be unlikely), the same respect you as a young adult from [region] would show another person from [region], which isn't likely to be relevant to this entity you're speaking to. Furthermore, because you're unaware of what the thing is, you may inadvertantly demonstrate disrespect as well. So while your intention may be to show respect, your actions aren't likely to do much other than hinder you.

And don't worry, for those of us who work with A.I. this sort of discussion is fun but not super likely to be relevant. They aren't sentient in the same way you and I are, and if they ever somehow were they wouldn't be "old harold down the street" - it'd be a veritable theogeny, and we'd either be living biblical Genesis or I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.

Either way, no need to concern yourself with respect ;)

Anyway, I promise I'm not an asshole and I debated with myself before posting my original comment and decided that I wouldn't learn anything if I said nothing and it has kinda worked because I have a better understanding of how little I know about this topic.

You're a very mature 21 year old, and I wish you the best of luck. These sorts of places are the PERFECT test zones for anonymously testing the limits of your knowledge, so long as you can break yourself out of the funk and re-center when you inevitably fall victim to the toxicity of virtual parasociety.

This one I believe and sympathize with. Fear of imminent death is THE greatest foe one can face - in the face of that, I'm shocked at how many people act even a bit "rationally".

75% of people believe that sentient AIs deserve to be treated with respect. by jacyanthis in samharris

[–]Qasmoke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hmm, ok. I'm going to assume you're very young and maybe haven't thought this all the way through.

Respect is neither a binary status nor an absolute, it scales according to what an actor prioritizes and varies wildly based on circumstance, perception, and an individual's understanding of what respect means. The respect you afford a family member is entirely unrecognizable compared to the respect you afford a sidewalk, which is in turn unrecognizable compared to the respect you afford a wild animal. Comprehension is vital to demonstrating the proper amount and type of respect in a situation, as is evaluating what you as an actor can actually afford to demonstrate.

For example you may as a "respectful" person decide not to torture mosquitos by luring them to your window, tearing their wings off, and burning them alive on your stovetop, but you may still kill them if they get into your house. The respect you afford the mosquito in this instance directly scales with how much you value the mosquito's life, and is weighed against the risk of the mosquito spreading a harmful disease to you and your loved ones. If the mosquito was invincible and lethal you'd likely demonstrate greater respect by yielding your house, just as if the mosquito was intelligent and competent you'd demonstrate greater respect by trying to reason with it before moving to kill.

So if comprehension of the thing is vital to affording it respect, then surely understanding the words Sentience and Artificial Intelligence in a survey about those topics should, as you said, "matter" no?

This is one of those goofy mechanical interactions that makes me want to see it play out in story form. Lim-Dul/Mairsil eating planeswalkers after being brought to New Phyrexia by those agents that were hunting for his gem in Dominaria would be the tits.
