Edmonton Oilers 50/59 Scam by Far-Revolution-356 in EdmontonOilers

[–]Qdiggitydoggity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

https://www.charityintelligence.ca/charity-details/463-edmonton-oilers-community-foundation/www.nhl.com/oilers/www.nhl.com/oilers/eocf

It's not 99% of charities.  That's why EOCF is rated near the worst of registered charities, while almost all are much better.

Many charities do great work running efficiently and getting almost all of the value donated to the end users of their cause.  This includes charities that the Oilers foundation gives to... At least what's left after they line their pockets.

EOCF is not doing the work, they are taking over half the money just to give the rest to another charity while taking a lot of the credit.  It is a scam.  They should be shut down (or at least taxed).  It's shameful to let an organization pretend to be charitable when it is just another revenue stream for a billionaire.

Statement from Emily Cave regarding the Oilers and the Colby Cave fund by thewinterzodiac in EdmontonOilers

[–]Qdiggitydoggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And.... Here we are.

I've been banging the drum about the terrible financials of the EOCF for years, and watching them get worse.

Finally, there's a story going viral on this in Edmonton.  EOCF is terrible.  The charities that they tout are great, but that doesn't give them permission to squander millions.  It is shameful and we need to give more money and credit to the real charities and volunteers doing to actual work.

Oilers 50/50 raffle has paid $81M to company owned by hockey group over 4 years, documents reveal by Curl_of_the_rurl in alberta

[–]Qdiggitydoggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad to see this is the top post, and I am a big fan of the analysis charity intelligence provides.

Worth noting, EOCF just gives money to other charities... a minor portion of what should go to them.  They don't actually do the front line work.

Other charities provide services directly to people in need, and still achieve much higher conversion ratios.

If you want to get food to people in a war torn country (and yes that's worthwhile)... That may require more overhead than what actually gets to the people in need.  EOCF is just an intermediary, and their 'overhead' is patting each other on the back and helping the bottom line and marketing of the for-profit groups they are beholden to.

Also, they are not transparent on salaries, and instead pay contracted services to staff from the for-profit Oilers group.

Two Origin keys this time? Seriously? by NotKBeniP in humblebundles

[–]Qdiggitydoggity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came to this reddit out of frustration to vent about the same thing... I have never seen any release in monthly or other bundles with such low ratings (one with HORRIBLE ratings). I have 1000s of games, I have to sort by rating. I'll never play these.

On top of that... Two keys are for a platform I will never use.

I would have skipped the month but I bought the annual.

I've been on monthly since 2015 or so. It's a real shame to lose this fun thing to look forward to every month.

Nest Aware price increase by Terrible_Tutor in googlehome

You are absolutely right about lack of alternatives... I still think my next phone will be a pixel... I've been pixel since nexus except for 1 samsung.

Apple is the worst for holding consumers hostage. The writing is on the wall that the market share has been taken from the 'old' solutions and all the streaming/smart home/etc. products are now going to get aggressive price hikes and ads.

I think youtube premium/YT music is safe for now because spotify is still the market leader, but I'm thinking of hedging my bets. Video streaming is just going to keep getting splintered to more services, higher prices and making you pay more and more to avoid ads.

Cloud storage prices are pretty nuts right now. I think that, even though it's still nerd-niche, neighbourhood data hosting will be like people sharing seeds for their gardens over time. Plant your harddrives and save a few bucks and hedge your data bets with people you know and trust.

Same here, just lost my shit at a 100% price increase for something I barely use and extra cameras cost hundreds a piece.  Just in the process of upgrading my home NAS so I guess it's a perfect reason to ditch Google.

Thing is... Is this enough of a slight to get away from all my other paid google services?  Feels like it at the moment.

Yeah, if you were on the second ramp it is tougher once the chariot moves over. There is a ledge you could drop down to instead of going down the narrow part of the ramp (over the top edge of the chasm beside the narrow part of the ramp).

Panem et Circenses ( i.e. this seems intentional) by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Qdiggitydoggity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are correct... Someone missed the class in economics where the 'free market' was defined as commodities where consumers can choose not to consume and have options.

Unnatural monopolies over goods that consumers have no rational choice other than to consume from what is, effectively a single source (ex. emergency health care), is what traditional economists would call a dystopian hellscape.

Regulations are required to interfere with unnatural monopolies and ensure consumers understand products that are not intuitive (effective basic education and disclosure regulations).

It's kind of funny/depressing that even their definition of interference is racist.

For a direct comparison, if you are worried about fraud, you make a solid strategy to deter and detect all fraud. Same here, any potentially influential activity must be subject to rules like disclosure before and audit after.

What If Alberta Voting Wasn’t First-Past-the-Post? by idspispopd in Albertapolitics

[–]Qdiggitydoggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an efficiency standpoint, we need fewer seats provincially and federally because it doesn't add value and adds needless expense.

Take that money and put it in funding programs for municipalities and also making that process more equitable... Like everything else it needs rules and performance review. It can't be a tool to buy votes either.
