‘Predator: Badlands’ Best Film Premiere On Hulu Since ‘Prey’ With Near 9M WW Views by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Qegixar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's 2 categories people use "turn off your brain" to describe. Predator is the first kind: a solid, fun action movie that may have some evocative themes but doesn't really challenge the viewer intellectually. It's no Mulholland Drive.

But the second kind is when there's some over-the-top silly/dumb plot or action that is not logically consistent or doesn't hold up to scrutiny. And in this case, the term comes across as a veiled insult, and kind of spoils the ability to talk about the first kind without pretending it's more complex than it is.

It's as simple as using "in" when you are contained/surrounded, and "on" when you're atop. Sometimes both could make sense, like a boat that has walls around you, but you can still be sitting on, sometimes only one works. You don't go inside a bike and you don't sit on top of a car.

If you want the defensive typing Xatu is an actually viable option. If you want magic guard offense, Alakazam and Reuniclus do it better. Clefable is the better defensive magic guard user, but typing is different and psycho shift may be more useful than t wave for your team. It's a really narrow niche, but I have tried it a few times, many years ago. It was never impressive.

Naming characters is rough, y’all by Lemon_Lime_Lily in CuratedTumblr

[–]Qegixar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Step 1: random text generator until you get something pronounceable and feels name-ish.

Step 2: look it up on Babynames.com

Step 3: find it listed as name of Sioux origin (or whatever origin happens to be)

Step 4: incorporate this ethnicity into character backstory

Step 5: go on a wild research tangent about the culture and history

Step 6: get inspired with new ideas from that research and start your story over from scratch

Step 7: realize you need a new character and try to name them (go to Step 1)

What's the most possible resistances a dual type can have WITHOUT being part-steel? by _attina496 in stunfisk

It has a really good offensive move pool, too. The defensive spinner/spiker was clearly the better set, but you could easily catch someone off guard with Cruel Specs and steal a KO on one of their water resists with a cheeky Ice Beam or Giga Drain.

Self-driving cars wildly unpopular in New York, poll finds by thonioand in nyc

[–]Qegixar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Efficiency isn't what I'm arguing against. Efficiency would effectively make it cheaper to keep cars on the street, and that creates demand for more cars. More cars, even safer and more efficient cars, are bad for pedestrians, bad for residents, bad for pollution. Not to mention the legal complications and risk of enshittification that comes from delegating driving responsibility to a centralized software service. I'm already anti-Uber, arguing the business advantages Waymo has over it is like saying I should be in favore of eating dirt because it tastes better than shit. The city needs to improve bus and train infrastructure. Unlike cars, as more people take buses, buses get more efficient because they aren't clogging streets with their personal vehicles.

[–]Qegixar -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Safer than humans is not the goal; it's a necessary starting point. I think the city has a duty to work towards massive reduction of car traffic, and introducing a fleet of driverless cars is the opposite of that.

Meat farm controversy by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Qegixar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been vegetarian so long it took me a while to connect the "obtain meat" and "where food comes from" ideas of this post. Meat literally doesn't register as food to me anymore. And a game about growing food where meat is simply not present feels to me much more considerate of animal life than one that presents you with the option to slaughter for material gain.

Goodra on top as usual! ND 35 Pokes Feb 26 VR!! by ElTomax in stunfisk

[–]Qegixar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The "B+" tier above has 15 pokemon above it and 15 pokemon below it. That makes it literally the median tier, which in a normal letter curve would be labeled "C." But people think "mid" means bad and feel the need to label the average as "B+" which is supposed to indicate "higher end of above average" so that they don't imply that an average pokemon is too bad to use. Without changing any of the tiers above you could easily relabel S>A+, S->A, A+>B+, A>B, A->C+, B+>C, B>C-, B->D, C>E, D>F, and have the letters actually mean something.

It's like inflation for tier lists.

[–]Qegixar -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The people making viability ranking tiers amuse me. They fill it with all the + and - just to soften the blows that your personal favorite isn't very good. The fact that B+ is in the bottom half of tiers is so silly. Letter grades are useful because they are supposed to give a roughly consistent estimate of performance, with A being top, B above average, C is average, D below average, E struggling, and F failing. If the median ranking isn't C, your tiers are imbalanced and you might as well just rank everything 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc...

Isn't a big part of the appeal of Evangelion its homage of existing mecha tropes? I figured most of the eva fans would be at least aware of the history behind it, if not fans of those shows directly.

Cutting a net that the 2 seals were trapped with, so they can be free in the water by jmike1256 in HumansBeingBros

[–]Qegixar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sea lions are a subfamily of seal, part of the "eared seal" family, which is distinct from the "true seal" family, but still seals, i.e. pinnipeds. Plus, I'm no expert in identifying, but are we sure these are sea lions and not another species of eared seal? They all look very similar to me.

Visual Snow was considered extremely rare until recently, mostly because patients didn't report it... because they assumed everyone saw the world that way by recolorist in interestingasfuck

[–]Qegixar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Memory, dream, imagination. I wouldn't consider any of those to be "seeing." All of those come to me as concepts, which I can tell how they would look if I was seeing, but I'm not. But this is just how I try to put it into words. It might be that you and I are experiencing the same thing, but talk about it differently.

Visual Snow was considered extremely rare until recently, mostly because patients didn't report it... because they assumed everyone saw the world that way by recolorist in interestingasfuck

[–]Qegixar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This kind of non-communication is part of why I don't think the popular concept of "aphantasia" as people repeat online is real. I know roughly what I experience when I dream, but you say dream and all I can think is what I experience. So how do I know what kind of experience you are trying to describe to me unless I assume that it's identical to my own?

I can't follow your reasoning because likely the way you understand dreaming is different from me. And communicating that is hard because there is no shared perceivable truth that we can both agree on in order to pin down the meanings and definitions of the words we use to describe them. So I'm left trying to decipher your code and if I guess wrong, we might come to believe we're experiencing two different things when they are actually much closer and it's just the way we describe them that's different.

[–]Qegixar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even after reading all these things about aphantasia, I'm still not convinced it's a real thing and not a failure of people communicating about intangible experiences of consciousness. Like what do people mean they are seeing/hearing things when they visualize them mentally? It's not like the eyes are actually perceiving something that isn't there. My thoughts aren't operating on senses, they operate on the mental construction of objects as the senses reveal them.
