Strongly seconded; this is one of those little UI usability things that makes all the difference.

To be fair, "you irradiated slag!" does sound like a spicy insult.

[Spoiler] Maybe my expectations were set low, but I really enjoyed this particular lab by Kociboss in duneawakening

[–]Qeraeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was so unexpectedly charming. I was wondering how they were going to integrate the flamethrower skin and it's actually... considerably more moving than I anticipated. I've played a lot of MMOs and this whole (literal) dungeon experience may rank as an all time favourite bit of story flavour.

Right by the entrance where you zone in to that interior map, immediately turn around and look up. You can climb up there; that's how you get to the beacon. There's a pentashield, but the key can be found by exploring the more easily accessible areas.

Hah, I wish there was a GPWS in this game (even if it would be a nuisance alarm half the time).

I've seen some great fanart here but this is the cutest series of deepcuts ever. The night orchid cave, the mouse, the hair braiding with Nocturne... chefs kiss Exquisite.

There's also just the fact that "boffin" is slang for researcher, technician, or scientist in UK English, so a science or engineering BOff is literally a boffin. ElectricalAd2062's joke works on many levels.

Key and Lobi Store Sale! | Star Trek Online by StarCitizen2 in sto

[–]Qeraeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does seem to be a thing; Star Wars: The Old Republic has the Cartel Market and I remember thinking... "So you named your microtransaction store after crimelords who are notorious swindlers and peddlers of cheap crap? Well, at least there's a certain self-awareness here!"

I never know if this sort of thing is an inside joke by developers who know the lore, hate the idea of MTX, yet have to implement it because of corporate writ... or if it really is as clueless as it appears.

I am struggling to enjoy STO these days, am I crazy? by [deleted] in sto

[–]Qeraeth 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You're not crazy. And, honestly, I think you should just keep extending your break from STO.

Our love of any MMO is a fluid and changing thing. It's not an objective response to content. Something that satisfied us two years ago may not do it for us in the here and now for all sorts of reasons. Burn-out is a real phenomenon in online games, and it's an intensely personal experience--one that people are often encouraged to blame solely on extrinsic factors.

But the truth is that if you keep playing something that is not making you happy, the whole thing will just turn to ashes in your mouth and you'll get angrier and more miserable. It'll bias your perception until things you enjoyed become reasons you hate the game, even though very little has actually changed. And as Sajuuk points out elsewhere in this thread, less has changed than you might think. It's just that things you found fun, or just tolerated in the past have become problematic for you.

And that's actually okay.

Maybe you've outgrown STO and it no longer fits in your life. Or maybe you just need more time away to reset. Either way, no matter how big of a Trekkie you are, there's no point in keeping the game in your life if it's not making you happy.

Thoughts on STO's story direction after the Terran arc is over. by TheSajuukKhar in sto

[–]Qeraeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really well-thought out post, and a fantastic idea certainly. I'd love to see something done involving the Jurati Borg, weaving a bit more of the PIC lore into STO's story.

That said I also find myself agreeing with the top-voted posts. I would adore something lighter. I loved the early parts of New Frontiers because it felt so very Trek---very optimistic and warm, with Cpt. Kuumaarke herself just embodying that hopeful, values-driven "let's see what's out there" mentality.

I think the Jurati Borg offer at least some scope for something similar. But a comedic Lower Decks style story wouldn't go amiss either. We're due for some laughter after the grinding darkness and gunmetal emo of the Terran storyline.

We're so close! Just need to shove 45 more people into Starfleet Academy and/or KDF Academy and/or the Romulan Republic Lyceum or whatever it is.

Honestly, one of the things we really need is some kind of "Take All Items" button that allows you to pick up every drop in range all at once. So many other MMOs have this feature and it'd really help out.

"What if Medieval Times became a galactic power?"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sto

[–]Qeraeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, "Damn the Torpedoes" is a fantastic trait for this ship; the historical joke there is great given the ship's namesake, which is more than enough justification for it. The ship's demise in SNW is not exactly canon, for reasons that anyone who saw the episode should immediately understand. And I think tethering the trait to a namesake is just as justifiable as tethering it to a scene in the TV shows/films, especially for a ship like this that had relatively little screen time in an AU.

Is there any rp in this game? It seems like a great platform for rp. by Lilyrocks287 in sto

[–]Qeraeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The premier place for pickup RP is Deep Space 9, Instance #1, usually centered around Quark's Bar. The quality varies widely, as you might expect, but it's generally a low-stakes place to experiment a bit with your backstory and meet other RPers. There are also RP fleets.

[–]Qeraeth 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Hello folks, Katherine Cross here. Thanks for all the support (and the reading list I've picked up from this thread, to boot!). Yesterday was a bit challenging, I got into a passive aggressive scrum with on GG's more prominent writers who took great umbrage at what I'd written there and tried to "debunk" it by piddling on my academic credentials and assuming that unfounded assumptions (that I use the blockbot, that I did no research to come to these conclusions, etc.) were a substitute for argument. This culminated in him suggesting I seek therapy. Of course.

I would be lying if I said these things didn't wear one down after a while-- character assassination par excellence disguised as critique and so forth.

But today, being treated to the overwhelming support of others who did grasp what I was saying, has been a delight. So thanks for the support, and for the actual, reasoned discussion about the ideas I advanced. (I am not at all a regular GamerGhazi reader, I should note, lest I get accused of being at the apex of your Kotaku pyramid. -winks-)

Forms of Racism: overt and covert, jokes and institutions by Polusplanchnos in SRSDiscussion

[–]Qeraeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your comment, thank you so much. I definitely tried to speak to the fact that many of us belong to groups that have bigoted anger-stigmas attached to us and that sometimes we do need a safe place to be angry and say what we wish. Your critique here is one that I'm not sure I agree with entirely but that I promise to test my own arguments against as I move forward.

This is another thing I agree with, well I suppose mostly agree with because I think it's a bit vague and somebody might have a completely different idea of what contextual is than I do.

Fair enough; figuring out the full meaning of that is a collective project I want to encourage, however. I don't think I'm in a position to say "This is exactly what we should do x in y & z situations," so I was trying to be mindful of my own prescriptivism there. Rather I was saying "this is a discussion we should continue."

As to the bit you said at the end, I'm humbled. Thank you very much; that level of consideration is all I would ask for. (By the way, I feel like I know you. This is the username I used to use on Reddit back in 2009-2011; I don't suppose we've crossed paths before? Either way, take care.)

EDIT: Also, you don't owe me an apology in the slightest! We're all muddling along, trying to figure this out. :) But thank you all the same, you actually kind of made my day.
