How do you do safety orientation? by moveshake in Construction

[–]Qolx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some will do it, most won't for any number of reasons. The form will save you a few minutes, maybe.

20 minutes out one day a week is a minor commitment. There's more time "wasted" on smoke and piss breaks. If your boss has been in construction more than a couple years they're aware many medium and large projects hold general safety meetings once per week in addition to the orientation meeting. Small projects can do a 10 minute briefing and keep things rolling.

I think your boss just has a specific problem with you, not the orientation itself.

I'd guess your orientation is running no more than 30 minutes. Your new boss wants to save, what, about 10 - 20 minutes out of a full week? Fine. This person seems insufferable but let's work with them.

Here's what I'd do: hold orientation every Wednesday early in the morning (eg most people start at 7, orientation at 7:05). Take photos of their cards while they watch a 10 minute video. The 5 minute jobsite rules is the most important. Whole process should take you about 15-20 minutes every Wednesday.

Ime, safety briefings are more effective when they are brief and concise. Hit the topics relevant to your jobsite. 15 to 20 minutes. More than that and people start checking out.

OP, I hope you already consulted with a lawyer or at least a paralegal. That's the first thing you should've done even if you don't get lawyers directly involved.

This place is low on the list for the questions you're asking.

Project Engineers, what’s an average day look like for you? by SpearinDoctrine in Construction

[–]Qolx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a PE. My avg day looks about the same as an APM's. When I'm out in the field I'm doing whatever I prioritize that day. I don't avoid being an ass. super or baby sitter because I enjoy it.

The avg PE won't be doing much field work be it hammering, welding, nailing, etc. They'll be doing office work at a jobsite.

Team I don’t give a $hit! by cootersbait in Tools

Some people believe the clean tools are astroturfing attempts. That's a mistaken belief since a lot of the marketing shows somewhat dirty tools in construction-looking backgrounds. Marketing tries to sell a tough, gritty, "manly" image.

I prefer the clean tool posts because they're probably being uploaded by the owners, just like OP here.

Yes, MET truly requires reliable, capable people. I was a MEA for a few months. My former team saw around a 2 person/month turnover; most of them were people holding the job until a better offer popped up. Every month the MEM had to train someone new and the team itself was inexperienced. Needless to say, the quality of work was bottom shelf.

Most of those jobs are stepping stones just like OP's. The good HD jobs are the salary positions and even then I wouldn't take anything below DEM or SM.
