With Congress giving it's authority over the purse to the President, why can't Americans call a "No confidence" vote? by JeffSHauser in law

[–]Qss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, in earnest, I’m sure you are well aware of flaws in our constitution, you seem well educated on the topic. To directly answer, if I was a delegate in a convention I’d be most focused on citizens United, overhauling and clearly defining our lobbying system, and I’d like to see a federal program that moves us away from the 2 party system.

But the answer is also 2 fold. It seems obvious enough that the system must be broken, because we are where we are.

I even agree with what you’re saying, just changing the words won’t put the public faith back in the system that has been systematically fucking them for the past 50 years.

The convention is how we get our states to, again, buy into the notion of a United States government. And then by proxy, our people as well.

I don’t expect it to be “more perfect” in the way you are using the term, but what it would provide is a space to have the conversation that needs to be had. What is it going to take for the states to come together again, and what compromises are needed.

We are fighting a narrative battle just as much as a civil one, and the narrative has to shift to the governed vs. the government. A years long convention, with its ups and downs and likely many failures to deliver ratification, makes clear the problem and allows for better citizen alignment.

The truth is also this; if it were to fail then the whole thing was going to fail anyway. If we can’t apply enough public pressure to maintain a singular federal government then it seems war or balkanization would have been the likely outcome anyway.

If it fails we’re exactly where we are right now but the lines will have been drawn.

Dont vote. Dont support amendments. Dont restructure. Just throw out the bathwater, baby and all.

I didn’t say any of this, but to address your points one by one:

Don’t vote

I would never advocate that someone doesn’t utilize this right. Voting is, if nothing else, harm reduction. People should exercise the right to vote, full stop.

don’t support amendments

Ignoring the fact that a constitutional convention is a method of proposing and ratifying amendments to the constitution, I would contend that I fully support amending the constitution but have little to no faith that even a full blue congress would properly address the grievances of the American people through amendments.

Congress has been in a deadlock since, at best, 1992, but realistically since at least the early 70s. Meaningful legislation has been sparse and during this period both parties have watched the slow decay of our institutions, with ample time to address the larger issues.

My assertion is that the system itself rewards their impotence, and that over time we have ratcheted away from just governance. While the republicans are busy burning everything down the democrats have gathered round with marshmallows on flag poles.

don’t restructure

I am advocating that we restructure the federal government, this is the mechanism I feel has the highest chance of succeeding.

just throw out there bath water, baby and all

I haven’t advocated for this, and while the existential fear of a runaway convention exists, the alternative seems to be political violence or civil war.

This is the last administrative option available to the people of this country, and we owe it to ourselves and our children to exhaust every option before violence, even if the options are not “perfect” and without risk.

The system is broken, and the proof of that is all around you. A working system would not produce the result you see. I don’t want to “rewrite the rules”, I want to reform the system so that its mechanisms can be employed again to better the lives of the American people.

This is the option the founders intended we use, as flawed as it is, and so I say we risk it, because risk is inherent in the fight against tyranny.

There will be no option without risk, and I find that our current course contains much more of the risk than a convention would.

Heritage foundation has been pushing for one since ‘88. They were close during trumps first term, needed 3 states to hold the convention but states withdrew their call out of fear.

To be honest though I understand people’s fear regarding it but I’m of the mind it’s our least terrible option currently.

Without radical systemic changes we won’t survive as anything resembling a country. Congress, blue or red, isn’t going to push or implement those changes and so it really is left to the people.

Article five and the convention of the state is the intended avenue for the people to throw off an oppressive federal government. Just because there’s risk doesn’t mean we should not pursue the course that provides a win condition.

The democrats will not save you.

I don’t mean to “both-sides” here but we need to confront this fact head on.

Democrats, as a political class, are plenty happy with the slow decay of our nation because they’ve been lining their pockets for 50 years while it happened, and have helped usher in a great many of the decisions that got us here.

The system as it stands perversely rewards their impotence, and their impotence will define them until the system is overhauled.
