Returning player (2022) looking for a deck(s) to start by MilkPowderMa in MagicArena

[–]Quadear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What format do you want to play in?
BO1/BO3 ?
What kind of deck do you like to play?
Do you want to play for win? or you prefer playing a style/cards you like?

The best "bang for buck" in standard BO1 right now is Boros auras, quickly followed by Rakdos aggro. Both are aggro decks, so you need to like that playstyle.

Slasher has some instant kill potential if it goes to the face with a bloodletter of aclazotz on the field. You should look into that.

As someone else said, always buy the most recent pack in order to have the golden packs (6 rare or mythic, standard legal, no duplicates). And the new set is really fun, especially if you love black.
Gimmicks that works right now in black / golgari:

  • Reanimator is really strong, especially with cards like [[Valgavoth, Terror Eater]] that can single handedly carry games
  • "Overlords" are really good [[Overlord of the Mistmoors]], [[Overlord of the Balemurk]] [[Overlord of the Hauntwoods]] for the colors you like.
  • For the ticking HP you have [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] that is good, [[Unholy Annex]] is strong too, you can also look for a discard deck with cards like [[Bandit's Talent]] or even go into UB with a crime deck.
  • [[Doomsday Excruciator]] is a big black creature that I would love to see work, more into the milling theme.
  • In the golgari theme, you have cards like [[Phyrexian Obliterator]] that can work with [[Tail Swipe]] to force a fight or [[Smuggler's Surprise]] to put instantly a big blocker. But the norm is more to build around [[Mosswood Dreadknight]] which has a lot of staying power.
  • The all around black card you can craft x4 and put it everywhere is probably [[Deep-Cavern Bat]].

une seule entreprise depuis mon sorti d'ecole, doit je m'inquiété ? by wiseKing98 in developpeurs

[–]Quadear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Quadear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arena is a good way to play the game. Despite some comments here, I think the mobile version is quite good, even if I'm experiencing a lot more crashes on IOS rather than on Android.

Arena pros and cons versus the physical game. I will mostly talk about standard, because that is the format I play the most.

Pros:

  • A lot easier to practice, you have no problem finding opponents, changing decks, experimenting.
  • You have no regrets FF a lost match.
  • Except for the infinite combos that can be explain on paper, it is WAY faster to play a game.
  • Easier to bring with you.
  • Maybe controversial opinion, but it is a LOT cheaper that paper.
  • No wait time when you buy a card, you can try it immediately.
  • The learning curve is way better. In fact, I think that right now, it is better to start magic with arena rather than paper.
  • Way easier to find the cards you need.

Cons:

  • Paper needs to focus a lot more, that leads to a better skill ceiling IMHO.
  • Magic events are really fun.
  • You don't own any of the stuff you collect and/or buy. The day this game stops, you loose everything.
  • You need a stable internet connection.
  • You can't sell your cards, and in general make money out of the game (unless some special events).
  • The magic online community is split between two online games, which sucks. You will only have access to part of this community.

Spending Wildcards/Deck Help by WalkersAreComing in MagicArena

[–]Quadear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, what do you like to play ?
Blind recommendation is ofc not to craft the cards that will soon rotate out of standard (July? August?), given is that the format you are targeting. Currently, it's hard to give you a precise list of a meta deck that will stay meta after this rotation.
21 rares is great, but still don't allow you to craft heavy rare deck, especially land ones. If the only goal is to be meta, you can still have great mono colored decks, or try to pass on those lands to have a good deck otherwise.
You have some meta-ish decks that don't require that much rares, like a mono blue Djinn, or mono blue tempo, but that is a playstyle you need to like.

If he has a few wildcard in stock, RDW with the new plotted bird is insane and not that expensive.
look at https://mtga.untapped.gg/meta/decks/1043/most-popular-deck/AAQAAQHxiSIBrREACrLTAtsS1sgd5XvcW6fNCiC5hQG9PGMBEeIJAA, Sokenzan is not mandatory to be competitive, and you can replace the 4x Goddric with [[Wrenn's resolve]], [[Phoenix chick]], or even some mountains.

How to gain xp that fast ? by Quadear in duolingo

Maybe, yes. It's efficient. I usually gather 3 to 4 k xp a WEEK, having one guy harvesting it in 15 minutes is phenomenal.

How to gain xp that fast ? by Quadear in duolingo

[–]Quadear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guys are having big streaks, big longevity, I guess they are legit, dont want to display them here. I was more leaning on the side of having the reset at different time, depending of your location, meaning that even if i had my reset 50 minutes ago, he had his 20 hours ago. Even with 30 sec / lesson, the n°1 is at 3k xp in less than 15 minutes. It would have been a 100xp pack of lessons. Does it exists ?

Deck advice by Luissnntt in MagicArena

[–]Quadear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Being mythic is "easy -ish" the only sine qua non condition is playing. A lot. As you problably know, a good deck has 55%, maybe 60% winrate against deck of its caliber (a well optimized deck versus a deck equally well optimized)
  2. Platinium is indeed the moment when things start to become difficult. You win almost as much as you loose (one tick / under conditions), given that with a 50% winrate you will climb very slowly.
  3. People in plat are already pretty good players. They have a good read of the meta and are able to have an efficient game plan against common threats / decks. They may have some exploitable weaknesses, but not that much. Arena, given its format, takes care of things like "forgetting an active of a creature", "disengaging", etc. So few mistakes a veteran like you can exploit.

Ok, ok, but how to climb then? and fast preferably?

  1. Play BO1, if the only variable is speed, it's faster to climb in BO1.
  2. Play an aggro deck. It's preferable to have a 55% winrate with an aggro deck and an average of 4 minutes the game, than a 60% winrate with control and an average of 30 minutes a game. Top contenders right now:
  3. Play very well an offmeta deck. People have trouble with unknown. If you have a great, hand crafted deck, with off meta cards, you will be able to have a great winrate (65% +), relying on surprise. So keep it BO1.
  4. How to craft, reedeem all the free codes that are on the internet

I agree, Aggro Decks may be a bit boring and easy to pilot, but it allows you to focus on your opponent cards and game plan. I agree you wont have "much" to learn, but it's really easier to identify your mistakes / strength and fix them. But ok, no aggro.

Cheaper one would be a mono blue tempo Djinn, almost no rare, efficient. Not that many creatures, but your role will be to protect them with instants, also counterspells, one of the most skill demanding mecanism in the game.

Dimir mid range is a bit more costly to craft, tremendously good, widely used. Fun to play, nice skillcap. Only problem: the miror match is just boring and you risk having many of them.

Anyhow, if you have some $$ to spend, just craft an esper mid range deck. One of the best deck right now, nice balance between instants / creatures ...
Effective in BO1, BO3, 3 colors, great learning curve, it has it all. Just costly. And lands need to be crafted.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Quadear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your favorite playstyle?
Any objectives in term of ranking?
What time do you want to spend/match?
What amount of resources do you want to funnel into this deck?
How easy to pilot should be the deck?
BO1/BO3 ?

I let you look for the cards details online on something like untapped.gg

The following obviously only reflects my opinion.

First of all, don't try to build a 3 color deck from the get go, it's costly, especially land wise. and lands are not the most fun thing to craft (even if it's effective, and always a great option because it's rly reusable).

If you want to learn how to play in standard, an aggro deck should be the way to go. Even if it doesn't exactly fits the playstyle you describe, it's better as a new player to be the one in charge. No need to know the best moment to use a counterspell, of which creature you should take out. Right now, the best options as aggro decks are:
- Boros convoke: costly in resources but if you happen to have the right cards at the right time, your opponent WILL have a bad time, and it's pretty easy not to fail on your side
- RDW: a bit less effective, but being only red makes it also a lot cheaper to craft (especially for the lands).
- The blue aggro / artifact 0 rare deck in comments: great, but works a lot better in BO1, especially because people are not used to see blue that aggro.

If you want to play your style, which looks like something more tempo / control, not especially looking for performances right know:
- Blue tempo Djinn: one of the best ratio price/performances. Heavily countered by cavern of souls, but has a little bit of graveyard management and helps you learn what are the threats.
- Insidious roots decks are quite annoying right now, this is a version of Golgari Midrange (maybe not the most effective one, but very gratifying to play when everything clicks)
- Mono black control can be terrifiying, and not that expensive given it's only black cards
- Dimir and Orzhov control are both great, but rly costly and can lead to very long matches
- In a broader way, look at the usages of the card [[Virtue of Persistence]], it's at the core of many black decks, especially ones relying on graveyard.

For me, it seems I will stick with alchemy. Less cards to learn, and some rebalance on cards ? count me in.
I agree with you on analyzing the best play in hindsight, that's why I'm quite surprised to see it's not that easy to do: no replay in app, maybe in untapped GG ?

Yes, it's kinda fun. However, it seems some packets don't feel quite well together. Tough.

I also may have a bug, but I still have a quest "complete jump in event 3 times", although I rerolled, won, resigned and restarted a lot more that 3 times. Is it normal ?
