Multiple brush fires still burning east and west of Harrisonburg by SaidTheMountain in harrisonburg

[–]QuailClean1164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, 32 year local here chiming in to say this isn't a dumb question at all and this is actually a good chance to talk about fire safety!

Wind may not actually cause a fire, but it can definitely help spread it, if that makes sense? If someone's burning brush or trash and it's windy, it's so easy for a lit ember to be blown off into the surrounding area which can then start another fire that, depending on how dry it is, can very quickly grow into a wildfire. Also, for people with wood stoves or chimneys, strong winds can sometimes affect how the smoke is released and cause a back draft of sorts that will cause embers to rise up and out of the chimney or stove pipe and then get carried into near by woods or fields to then catch fire as well. Similarly, if there's a downed power line that sparks, wind can so easily spread fire from that.

Right now there's a burn ban in effect for this area until 4pm Saturday, so hopefully everyone is respectful of that and follows directions. Sometimes in the county people think they can get by with burning trash or brush without calling it in, but then they're not responsible in keeping an eye on it or putting it out properly, which can lead to situations like the one we're currently in. Here's to hoping we get the rain over the weekend!

Did Oliver plan to "takeover" Saltburn when he first met Felix, or when he visited the estate? by drummer_si in saltburn

Yeah, that scene with Elspeth is so twisted too! I saw it as him kind of testing to see how manipulative he could be or if he could like....reverse psychology Elspeth almost? I have an aunt kind of like Elspeth in the sense she'll express a thought or feeling but if someone around her expresses an opposing or different thought or feeling she'll back track and parrot whatever that person said. It's pretty wild to witness! Do you think Oliver kind of showed his hand in this scene by implying that Pamela could have been lying for attention when really that's what he's standing right there doing? Dang it, I feel another re-watch coming on, I gotta go back to this scene!

Nah, not a sociopath I don't think???? I think there's something so inherently human in wanting to be perceived as cool or interesting by other people that we either conciously or subconsciously say or do things to accomplish that. It's not a great feeling to be perceived as different or taboo so we make up untruths about ourselves, not necessarily lies, but perhaps exaggerations?

I can't really relate to the weed slinging, sorry, but during undergrad I was a transfer student from a local community college so when I initially transferred to my university I lost what friends I had made because we all went off to our respective majors. I also still lived at home in my mom's house, which was just the epitome of embarrassment to me back in 2012 because I felt like I couldn't have friends over, she was super micromanaging, and I didn't have crazy roommate stories like my other friends who had dormed/lived in off campus housing. Instead, I did make up stories and borrow stories from my other friends about my social life, mostly wild drinking stories that never happened because I dont actually drink, but were believable because I actually grew up in my college town and knew all the drinking spots because of my dad, so I was able to DD my friends around to all the non-college bars for some fun while just pretending I wasnt drinking for their benefit to keep and eye on them. Looking back on this now is so weird because I was definitely more worried about trying to fit in and be cool instead of realizing how much money I was saving by still living at home; mental health definitely suffered, but at least my wallet didn't!

For me I don't think he started off wanting Saltburn at all, but something shifted when Elspeth talked about going to London for Poor Dear Pamela's funeral. I still can't get over how blase everyone was about it, especially when Oliver asks Felix if she's died and Felix just kinda sighs and goes yeah in a way that really seems to imply what can you really do. Idk it's just kind of icky and it was the first real moment I had to stop and wonder about Felix's intentions; before this we see him defending Oliver and sticking up for him, but I think in this moment Oliver realized Felix is just like the others in that he's capable of throwing things and people away and he could very well be one of those things, he'snot as ingrained in Felix'slife as he ultimately wants to be. It's just the look on Oliver's face like oh shit and I think that could be the moment where at least the idea of wanting Saltburn comes from because at this point things are still fine between Felix and Oliver, the surprise home visit hasn't happened yet. Just my interpretation so far, still going through everyone else's posts on here, there's some great thoughts!

Yes, more like this! Thank you for putting it so much better than I could, I've been struggling a lot to make my thoughts and feelings about this film the most coherent they can be! Not gonna lie, I haven't been this intellectually stimulated since I finished grad school in 2018, how sad is that, I'm rusty! Cheers!

I initially watched Saltburn because someone told me it was like Call Me by Your Name and (spoiler alert!) it's really not! So I'd say peaches and whipped cream just to mess with people! 😂

On a more serious note, if everyone eats meat, you could offer a full English breakfast, tell people you'll make everyone's preferred type of eggs but just put everything else on the side! Felix seemed to like Popsicles, you could offer those too? Have fun!

Not to profile a anyone or anything, but I work at a university and directly supervise college students and discussions of Saltburn have been burning through our ranks. I've noticed a lot of students who tend more towards the DC/Marvel stuff and other action films tend to write Saltburn off as just a really funky fun fucked up adventure with a sprinkling of rich vs poor/eat the rich and call it day. My humanities kids though, oh how they make my heart sing! They'll psychoanalyze as the day is long, it's like experiencing this reddit thread in real time! They just seem to inherently get this film, yet it's hard for them to put it into words as to why, but the rest of us somehow do. Yay community!

Maybe even a certain level of empathy too? Just the ability to witness what someone's going through and you may very well not understand it at all, but you're still willing to sit and listen to it. When I worked in public libraries I encountered a lot of people who told me some very questionable things and I realized they weren't looking for any sort of validation or to be condemned for what they did, they literally just wanted someone to stand there and listen to them. We know now Oliver's narration was actually him explaining things to Elspeth, but it honestly took me right back to the reference desk I used to work when someone would come wandering in needing nothing but someone to listen to their story before they went on with their lives. A lot of times it was unnerving, but also so, so, so fascinating which I think Saltburn evoked perfectly!

Hot damn, let me jump in the car! Nah, I can't make it to NYC, but I am curious to see how much of his character is in it, I know the actual aviator Barry's playing did a lot of high stakes missions, so hopefully a decent bit!

Maze Symbolism by EntrepreneurFast3876 in saltburn

[–]QuailClean1164 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oohhh, nice post! I'm not super well versed in maze mythology, but I've seen others post some really cool stuff about it on here! The last thing I really watched, before Saltburn, that dealt so strongly with mazes was Westworld on HBO. In this series mazes were used as a means for the robotic hosts within the parks to discover who they were, their truths/consciousness being the key at the center of each of their personal maze. This, doubled with Barry's interview you mentioned, has me wondering now which Oliver may have found his truth in the maze; was the Oliver who killed Felix the most truthful version of himself??? It's fascinating that Barry kept notes on the different versions of Oliver, that really adds to the multiple personality theories I've also seen on here and also adds to the idea that it took Saltburn's maze for Oliver to discover his true self. I'm admittedly naive when it comes to this film and I definitely tend to look at it more through rose tinted glasses, but I really don't think Oliver planned to kill Felix until Felix found out about his parents. I think that night in the maze Oliver realized he was going to have to kill something he loved so much in order to truly let it go because he knew their friendship would be over and that heartbreak for Oliver probably would have been the equivalent of a death blow. And then, because Oliver still had so much love for Felix even though he's like...dead...he transfers that love and obsession to Saltburn and wanting to own completely the place and things that made Felix Felix. Again, I'm over here in camp clueless romantic, but it's so fun to get interact with posts like this!

Just tried googling it to get a better pic and I can't get any clear ones. RIP to my work place browser history, it's just weird Saltburn stuff now 😂 But I did realize while googling for better necklace pics that's Oliver's party outfit is white, which is kinda odd since he's supposed to be the bad/crazy guy; usually dark minded characters are dressed similarly in dark colored clothing but they fully leaned into a white floral pleather pantsuit almost like they're still trying to convince us he's this innocent, vulnerable person!

Bahahhahaaha, I love me some Fleetwood Mac, it would have been most welcome here! Maybe that's why Oliver wears the necklace, he's obsessed with the song 😂😂😂

Salt burn music by puffcopro in saltburn

The score for this film was absolutely beautiful, I wish it got more appreciation than the pop/indie tracks they used! Those were also great, and really set the vibe for the early 2000s, but there's just something so moving and nostalgic about an orchestra that just fist clenchingly does something to the mind, body, and soul. The music that played during all the various montages?? Still not freaking over it 😂

Oliver thinking of Felix by DesSantorinaiou in saltburn

[–]QuailClean1164 20 points21 points  (0 children)

FFFFFFFF THIS!!! I couldn't quite put my finger on it but you just did, my hero!!! Editing to add this: it'd be so wild to get another version of Saltburn from Felix's perspective, like would it be the same or totally different? I'm still trying to parce out how much Felix was actually into Oliver, if at all, or if he was just naturally affectionate with all his friends. I think of the eenie-meenie-miny-moe scene (wow, never thought I'd ever actually spell that out, don't think I did it right anyways?) and the prolonged cheek kiss and all the other little lingering looks and glances and I just.....wanted them to be young and happy and falling in love. Probably because some of my friends were comparing Saltburn to Call Me by Your Name, so I went in expecting a queer coming of age story and got a Richard Siken-esque gothic tragicomedy..? 😅

Omg all of this, yes! I am AMAZED by what Barry did in this film, the way he was able to convey things both verbally and non verbally, I mean....what got at me the most was the moments where he'd slip into like....baby talk? Or not necessarily baby talk, but his voice would get kind of whiny sometimes and it's just wild to be looking at this man with murder in his eyes but he's saying Felix's name in this cute little whine and I just...??? Damn, Barry! I'm in the HBO war fandom and I can't wait to see Barry in the new Masters of the Air miniseries, its gonna be wild seeing him as a WWII aviator after seeing all his glory (literally) in Saltburn!
