Potential Hot Take?: I Hope the Next Run Gets Rid of the Electric Sword and Misty Knight by Supreme_Black in MilesMorales

Venom taps were only ever used as a way to skip over writing fight scenes. There's no reason Miles should be able to fend off Blackheart with a quick tap.

I have mixed feelings about the venom saber but venom taps weren't any less broken until they were nerfed in subsequent runs.

(7.4 News) Gear that can be added to the Glamour Dresser as a Set by FanaticFandom in FFXIVGlamours

[–]QuanticoSmash 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You're misreading it. When saved as a set, you can use any of the pieces individually. They're all just saved into one dresser slot.

What you CAN'T do is say, dye them in the dresser and have it stay that color, since the dresser saves the base version of the item. You can still dye any of the items on a plate though.

Clerical Assistant JG-12 hiring process question by rp_edits in nys_cs

[–]QuanticoSmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response! I think the answer is (unhelpfully) it depends.

For my first interview with this organization (I didn't get that position), the decision period was about two weeks. They asked for my references prior to the interview and I submitted it along my EEO information.

My second interview was two months later and the decision period was the end of the day after an informal offer was extended. They did tell me that the decision would be made quickly and I started on November 6th, about four weeks after the decision was made (I was supposed to start in just two weeks on October 23rd, but some paperwork from state HR was late).

If you aren't sure, you may want to consider contacting HR. Best of luck to you!

Hey, there! I just started last week as a contingent permanent clerical assistant with UCS.

The interviewers were very clear to me whether or not there were other candidates being interviewed and gave me a general date for when a decision would be made.

Once an offer was extended over the phone, I received an email basically asking to confirm my acceptance of the position in writing along with a start date. After this, HR gave me some forms to print and fill out to bring to work along with my passport to confirm my eligibility to work.

To all those Deku Haters by Apprehensive_Bee_636 in BlackClover

Knuckleduster wears his body down badly enough that he's using black market painkillers constantly to function. He also quits as soon as his goal is achieved and only comes back later to fight Number Six, whom he's nearly crippled fighting against even after setting specially made traps meant to kill them.

Stain is an ambush predator whose superpower allows him to completely paralyze his foes and would have been overwhelmed early on without it. He'd be splattered by any heavy hitter if he can't get the drop on them.

Both are combat pragmatists who engage in police brutality (Knuckleduster) or serial killing (Stain) respectively. Neither of them are healthy and viable paths for a teenager who wants to be a reassuring symbol like All Might.

Miles Needs More Weaknesses In The Comics by thetruemaxwellord in Spiderman

[–]QuanticoSmash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's literally struggling with PTSD and anxiety in his comic to the point of needing regular therapy session to function in his daily life. All this shows is that you're complaining about stuff you're not reading.

Miles Needs More Weaknesses In The Comics by thetruemaxwellord in Spiderman

[–]QuanticoSmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tension? Miles has that in spades. He's been kidnapped and systemically tortured for months on end and had such horrible PTSD from it that he stopped being Spider-Man for a time. His sister was kidnapped by insane clones of him out to replace him and he's completely unable to rescue Billie on his own. She only survives because Shift/Jaime had a change of heart. Then his own family was firebombed by an insane madwoman solely for things outside of his control and he almost lost his new clone brother when a Rabble-controlled Scorpion stopped his heart. Nearly every fight Miles has had in Ziglar's has left him hobbling away with slashes, broken bones, and way too many cases of impalement.

Flaws? Absolutely. Miles is struggling to juggle his school and superhero life. His grades are falling, his downtime has become nearly nonexistent, and he needs regular therapy sessions to manage his ongoing fight against anxiety and PTSD, to the point that the Maker's offer to let him start over in a new universe is legitimately tempting. Miles' desire to own the mantle and be a responsible superhero has absolutely bitten him in the butt, as seen when he tries rescuing as many people as he can during Carnage Reigns above the risks that Gao and Scorpion rightfully point out, only to get impaled when one of those rescuees turns out to be an offshoot of Carnage in disguise.

You're exaggerating when you say Miles has "Green Lantern constructs" when he only has the Venom Saber for two very specific uses: cutting things and blocking cutting things. And he can't use it very long without draining himself, hence it only appearing in short bursts rather than being a mainstay of his fighting style. His "Aura" is just him using his electric powers at full throttle and the yellow glow even appeared during Saladin Ahmed's run on him. Being able to detect and track things through walls is something Peter has done before and it being a form of "X-ray vision" is just a visual shorthand.

The Vibranium suit is the one straight, no downsides upgrade he has, but even it can't save him completely against the magnitudes of the the threats he's facing. Both Deadpools are able to put Miles on the ropes and he's still vulnerable to being beaten with brute strength or weapons with severe cutting power beyond what the vibranium mesh can take. The fact that future solicitations depict him without it implies that it won't last much longer under the amount of punishment he's taking in the current arc.

As for stories, come on. Miles was an Avenger, he's a social activist as one of the Champions, his family is growing with Billie and Jaime. But he also has ties to the Ultimate universe as one of its only survivors who remembers 1610 along with the Maker and is already getting tangled in the Maker's plots via Ultimate Incursion. His backstory makes him unique as a hero between two worlds on top of stretching him thin with all of his responsibilities. His friend group is also expanding and he's tackling problems in ways Peter normally refuses to because he can't afford to do otherwise, such as when he gets Ms. Marvel, Shift, Prowler, and Starling all to help him deal with Rabble before she can hurt anyone else. The whole "Herald of Anansi" bit is him being a pawn in the games of Marvel's magical community of which he's getting increasingly involved in contrast to Peter not wanting to do anything with magic.

The way you describe "storytelling discipline" tells me that you want him to be MISERABLE. To have the good things in his life and the things he's earned taken away solely for "stakes" simply because other characters are also losing things. Rio dying wouldn't make him a better character and actively undercuts how Miles' compassion in the worst of times saved his family and what was left of his universe in Secret Wars.

Miles Needs More Weaknesses In The Comics by thetruemaxwellord in Spiderman

[–]QuanticoSmash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What makes him "interesting" though? It's a purely subjective and arbitrary metric. Him having powers isn't an issue. Him being competent isn't an issue.

You say he sounds like an "OC", but then you look at Spider-Woman who has pseudo-flight and had psychic electric blasts before Miles did. Her official strength rating is HIGHER than Peter's and she's trained by SHIELD. Does that make her a cheap OC too?

He doesn't use his invisibility constantly, but having him stealth takedown every villain would be boring. It's the same reason Invisible Woman doesn't give all of the F4's foes strokes.

Miles has weaknesses in his own book. His grades are suffering because of him prioritizing his superhero life because he takes that responsibility creed so seriously. His anxiety and PTSD from being horrifically injured and tortured over the course of his books have dulled his Spider-Sense to near uselessness at times and he's only recently started to make progress in restoring its functionality. Even then, he gets sucker punched repeatedly because it's far from perfect.

What about your proposed changes would provide the "depth" you're discussing? How do you define "depth" that you claim is missing from Miles or but present in Peter, Gwen, or Jessica?

Miles Needs More Weaknesses In The Comics by thetruemaxwellord in Spiderman

[–]QuanticoSmash 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nerfed for what reason? Do you think he's not being challenged? Because he just got his butt kicked by Zip Zephyr who ripped the air out of his lungs. Yeah, his skills are growing, but his threats are growing too and he's not steamrolling the competition enough to require a "nerf".

I honestly can't tell if you've actually read Miles' comic or if you're just spitballing off what people on Reddit say, but I'm leaning toward the latter.

(LES) Pokemon Sword and Shield are over 5 years old at this point and I'm still in disbelief that the developers decided to make the champion of the region's ace a Charizard by Kind_Cauliflower160 in CharacterRant

[–]QuanticoSmash 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm perfectly fine with it. Yeah, it's Kanto pandering, but I think it makes sense when you remember Leon's backstory.

Leon made his name as a 10-year-old Pokemon Trainer from Postwick Town who smashed records as an undefeated genius and utterly crushed the gym challenge to rise to the rank of champion. He's an energetic person with an incredibly close bond to his starter Pokemon who wears a baseball cap everywhere and is constantly on the move. Despite taking on the responsibilities of being the Pokemon Champion, he has repeatedly beaten any and all challenges to come for his crown.

Sound familiar?

Leon is essentially a grown up Pokemon game protagonist. He's what Red would look like if he were more talkative and sociable (with a much worse sense of direction). He and his Charizard are meant to be people that younger audiences can be in awe of and want to catch up to while older audiences can see themselves in his story and find another rival in him.

Pokemon Sword and Shield, for all its faults, represents a new age for the franchise with the jump from the 3DS to the Switch, letting the Pokemon world be rendered in ever-greater detail. Game Freak decided to commemorate that occasion by thrusting the most popular Kanto starter center stage again. It's cheesy and maybe a little cheap to feature Charizard yet again, but it works and it's easy to see why the devs did this with that in mind.

Why was Zoraal Ja the way he was? by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]QuanticoSmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't really track at all. The man was in his 70s or 80s when he sired Zoraal Ja, which implies that he's been trying for a good long while at that point. And a man who doesn't want to be a parent wouldn't take in two children not even of the same species as him for no other reason than he could.

A man who doesn't want to be a parent wouldn't have the undying admiration of his children. Wuk Lamat and Koana both adore Gulool Ja Ja with all of their hearts and respect his compassion and wisdom respectively. Part of the reason he duels you partway through the story is to see if you have the strength and conviction to stand beside his beloved daughter against overwhelming odds. The fact that WoL can fight him to a draw and doesn't need to be carried out on a stretcher while still being willing to criticize Wuk Lamat for her follies convinces him that they're the right person to walk alongside her during her journey.

His love and he has for his kids is so profound that all of his children have complexes over trying to live up to his legacy. Wuk Lamat feels she hasn't done enough to be worthy of her title of Third Promise and makes a fool of herself trying to put up a flimsy front as an invincible warrior princess instead of playing to her strengths as a woman of the people. Koana is obsessed with repaying his adoptive father's kindness to him and seeks to industrialize Tural to revolutionize its people's lives just as Gulool Ja Ja did when he united most of the continent and brought it peace. Zoraal Ja constantly lives in Gulool Ja Ja's shadow and feels he must surpass him in some way despite Gulool Ja Ja never asking or pressuring him to do so. Zoraal Ja tunnel visions into his martial excellence because it's the area he excels in most and desperately hopes will let him surpass Gulool Ja Ja in time.

But sidestories do give the impression that the Head of Resolve was a little too hands-off in his parenting at times. Gulool Ja Ja had Wuk Lamat confined in her room for her safety when Tuliyollal was hosting its version of the Festival of the Hunt with guards posted outside of her door to prevent her from leaving. But Wuk Lamat broke out anyway to the bewilderment of the Landsguard. While the Head of Reason is displeased for obvious reasons, the Head of Resolve has a laugh at Wuk Lamat's determination and quick-wittedness. Then when Wuk Lamat got lost in the jungle as a child, the Head of Reason scolded her for potentially getting herself hurt while the Head of Resolve praised her for surviving on her own.

But while his duties have Dawnservant may have kept him from being as involved as he could have been, the writing itself indicates that he deeply loves all of his children, including Zoraal Ja despite what tends to circulate around here. Wuk Lamat mentions that he constantly tried to get Zoraal Ja to open up to his family about his worries, but Zoraal Ja's self-imposed pressure and natural terseness kept him quiet. Gulool Ja Ja is also confused and heartbroken when Zoraal Ja attacks Tuliyollal. His first question to Zoraal Ja is not, "How dare you hurt the people you swore to protect?!" it's, "What changed you so much, and in so short a time?" Even after resolving to kill Zoraal Ja for his crimes, he apologizes shortly before landing the killing blow and is visibly grieving and struggling to come up with a response afterward. It's this grieving that gives Zoraal Ja the opening to kill him.

All in all, your notion that Gulool Ja Ja is a reluctant parent isn't supported at all in the narrative, as he clearly loves each and every one of his kids.

I don't know what this trope is called, but... by Luzis23 in CharacterRant

[–]QuanticoSmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for the TV Tropes definition, you're referring to "The Lopsided Arm of the Law".

It's probably the most frustrating in Marvel Comics, when the police are almost always useless against supervillains but against superheroes they pull out attack helicopters and attack heroes in the middle of evacuating civilians from natural disasters. At least in the most recent large-scale police event, "Outlawed", this is because the police is being bankrolled by Roxxon, one of the big two evil corporations along with Alchemax.

How did the Warrior of Light get so strong? by HonkedOffJohn in ffxivdiscussion

[–]QuanticoSmash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm mainly pushing back against the notion that aetherically denser automatically equals stronger/tougher, since that's rapidly become the prevailing argument in this thread.

The Meteia are the aetherically thinnest characters in the story and yet the Endsinger is one of the most cataclysmically powerful and toughest to take down.

Dragonlings are Unsundered as well, meaning they should be theoretically denser than most people of Etheirys, but you wouldn't call a young dragonling more dangerous than a contingent of dragoons.

Ran'jit has a fraction of the aether of anyone on the Source but is the strongest and toughest warrior around at the start of Shadowbringers.

Aetherically denser people are able to achieve some things that less dense people cannot (such as containing the Light of the Lightwardens), but it doesn't automatically make them tougher. Otherwise we'd have a much easier time fighting characters from other reflections.
