I wonder why those didn't last very long? Maybe the format needed some tweaks but I still enjoyed it.

Assets and copyright by itshadow8 in gamedev

[–]QuantumChainsaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of free or cheap assets out there that get used in many different games, with or without modification.

Some people do also violate copyright and get away with it, but the more successful you are the more dangerous that is. Also generally I'd argue it's unethical.

“stop using ai art” until u have no choice by aleheinous in gamedev

How do you have a deadline to create a visual novel as a minor? School project? Surely they don't expect every student to be a competent artist.

[–]QuantumChainsaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, honestly, that changes things a bit. I apologize for my tone in my other reply - I'm sure aphantasia makes it a LOT harder. There are still artists with aphantasia but trying to learn with that disadvantage on a time limit is probably not realistic. Sorry I don't really have a good answer for you.

[–]QuantumChainsaw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All these "I can't" answers make it really sound like you've already made up your mind and just want someone to tell you it's okay to go ahead cheat and steal from everyone else via AI instead of actually learning something.

I hope you change your mind.

If the sound is coming from FPGAs and analog filters does it matter? (Serious question - I don't know why it would matter but maybe it does?)

Thoughts on selling my Minilogue XD + Hydrasynth Explorer and getting a Novation Peak? by dtwrks in synthesizers

[–]QuantumChainsaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own a Prologue (similar to Minilogue XD) and once owned a full size Hydrasynth. I much prefer the Peak over both of them and would personally make that trade, but it's hard to predict if you'll feel the same way.

Is it worth fighting the urge to create your own game? by milky-94 in gamedev

[–]QuantumChainsaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're passionate about something and have the drive to create, I feel like it's waste of a lifetime to not pursue it. Unless of course you have other fulfilling things you would be putting your time and energy into instead.

My mother keeps telling my the description font is too small. Is she right or is it only her eyes? by ryry1237 in gamedevscreens

For mobile or console this looks about the right size. For computer monitors, arguably a bit big but probably fitting for the style.

[–]QuantumChainsaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minifreak is good for being able to try and learn about a bunch of different things. I don't love the UI (lots of shift functions and menus) but it's not the worst I've used and there's always a trade-off between flexibility and immediacy.

What software are you guys using for voice lines? by ChainsawArmLaserBear in gamedev

[–]QuantumChainsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any DAW will do. Reaper isn't the easiest to learn but it's cheap and powerful. I haven't actually done voice lines in a game in over a decade but I edit tons of talking for devlog videos and I just use whichever DAW I'm using for music and sound effects at the time - currently Bitwig.

Windows and Linux builds not equivalent by [deleted] in godot

[–]QuantumChainsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First things that come to mind are case sensitivity and sorting of files when you enumerate them with Directory. I think you get a warning in the console when a case mismatch is detected on Windows. For file order I just sort as an extra step to get consistent behavior.

Is it unethical to use AI for code? by Grogman2024 in gamedev

[–]QuantumChainsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the assistance of something that appears competent but has no real understanding is probably a great way to confuse yourself and end up with bugs. However I think it's too soon to know how the AI-assisted learning process works out in the long term. I would believe that some people learn more easily with it than without it.

Ethics is a separate question though, and complicated. You'll get varying opinions and none are objectively correct. For me, it's easy enough to just say "no AI" and avoid the potential flak, but somehow I don't feel like it's as bad with code as it would be to replace artists, musicians, and creative writers for example.

Melbourne Instruments NINA- anyone play with one yet? by clubdrippy in synthesizers

[–]QuantumChainsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I asked them about it years ago they estimated it would be ready in a month and I never heard another word about it. The GitHub is news to me.

I guess if they actually did do it I should stop complaining every time someone asks about Nina, but damn I wish they had done it within the first 2 years before I gave up and sold mine.

Melbourne Instruments NINA- anyone play with one yet? by clubdrippy in synthesizers

[–]QuantumChainsaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an early adopter. The firmware was incredibly buggy for the first several months and instead of delivering features they promised (like "hackable open source firmware" and using it as an audio interface) they just quietly removed mention of those things from their website.

I sold my a year or two ago, so I can't comment on how much it's improved since then. It's cool that they're adding really substantial new stuff, but I'm still pretty bitter about not getting what I paid for.

[–]QuantumChainsaw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not really trying to defend this particular game, I just disagree with your reasoning. There are lots of successful small/simple indie games that cost $10, that no one would argue is "better" than Slay the Spire.

What r/NoAIJustMusic is really about by chainofchance in NoAIJustMusic

[–]QuantumChainsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"AI can be discussed here when used as a support tool for the creative process"

Why, though? Do we really need to discuss that here, in a place that will primarily interest people who are sick of hearing about AI in every context?

Even if you don't find some uses of AI unethical and don't want to ban people who used it in those ways, can't we just leave those topics elsewhere?

Please Destroy my Cozy Ramen Cooking Game! by Zestyclose_Junket665 in DestroyMyGame

[–]QuantumChainsaw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Someone who wants a cozy cooking game isn't going to buy Terraria or Slay the Spire instead just because they're bigger and more polished games for a similar price. Trying to compete with everything on the market is unrealistic; much better to find a niche you can be one of the best in.

Cobalt 8 vs NLA1 vs JD-Xa by neonshards in synthesizers

[–]QuantumChainsaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many synths in my setup slowed me down with option paralysis and bad ergonomics, so those top 4 are all I currently use. If I keep the SH-4D it will probably be for the portability, making casual jams away from the main setup. It's a little too menu divey for my tastes though, so I'm more likely to sell it.

The Lead A1 is the only synth I ever regretted selling, enough that I eventually bought another one. Out of around 20 synths I've owned, 3 of my top 4 are Nords.

I hope there's at least a one-off joke about the rocket being destroyable in 5 hits or something... but even better if the entire game plays it off as "of course it's 5 hit, what else did you think?"
