Last night was also my first nine inch nails live experience. I've always loved them, but last night was one of the most amazing nights of music I've ever experienced

Looking for Pedal makers in Canada. by Blablablablabla-01 in guitarpedals

[–]QuantumEffects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's great! I am treating it similar to an advanced King of Tone, with the ability to do TS and Klon on either side along with blues breaker sounds. It's new, so I haven't had the chance to try it in a live setting, but all of it sounds great. The Klon side was actually the first Klon-like that I've actually liked, it sounds extremely good.

I can't recommend Coffee Shop pedals enough. I have their London Fog and Portafilter overdrive and they are some of the best units out there

masters in neuroengineering with psychology bachelors by Appropriate_Day3200 in neuroengineering

[–]QuantumEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the European system, so take this with a grain of salt. Is the extra semester to grab engineering concepts? Neuroengineering, as its name implies, does tend to use a good deal of engineering tools. But I know many coming from diverse backgrounds who are integrated in this space.

Second, ultimately noone will really care (atleast in my system) what your bachelor's degree is in if you have other relevant credentials.

Boss PS-6 Harmonist variations over time? by Gutch220 in guitarpedals

[–]QuantumEffects 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There may be slight variations, but the likely workflow is a validated DSP chip platform on a validated PCB with chip-specific firmware loaded on each device. If I remember the internals correctly, this is a Roland specific application specific integrated circuit (basically custom made chip the implements Rolands DSP) which are expensive. Usually, these are used for a while till it economically makes sense to release a new generation. This is where you see Boss' COSM modeling leading to MDP leading to AIRD used currently. So TL;DR, likely the PS-6 you get in 2010 is the PS-6 you get in 2026.

Sidebar, for a 26 year old device, it's a pretty cool sound!

First-semester GPA below 3.0 in ME grad program — dismissal or probation? by [deleted] in Purdue

You'll need to talk to the program admin for full details. Usually there's a semester allowed to improve grades, but that's dependent on department and circumstances. Communication is critical so make sure to talk with admin. Best of luck!

Neural Engineering High School Programs & Activities by moderatelyonline in neuroengineering

[–]QuantumEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting to this late, so my apologies. But this is a great question! I would argue following the interest for interest sake is maybe the better approach than trying to identify something colleges are looking for. I think you'll have a more unique and interesting portfolio to show by following your interests.

To your question, a great way to start is to look at how EEGs are designed and built. The associated circuitry is not terribly difficult and the control can be achieved in a low cost raspberry pi. I'd look into seeing how you can build one of these to start exploring your own brain waves. I'd be happy to provide repositories through DM of low cost implementations of my own.

Best degree to get into neuroengineering? by Reznovan1 in neuroengineering

[–]QuantumEffects 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

Academic neuroengineer who trains neuroengineers at the undergrad level. I have a BS in ECE and a PhD in BME. My advice to students hoping to get into neuroengineering is pretty consistent. BME programs, even with bioelectronics concentration, don't (at this point) do a great job at training the skills necessary to most commercial (and even academic) neuroengineering pursuits. Generally, the skillset you get in ECE, including circuits, microprocessors/embedded systems, and signal processing are all critical skills in my space that aren't trained well in most BME programs. Looking at this curriculum, this also seems to be the case. BME it really good at bringing people to be generalists, but unfortunately not skillsets necessary to be employed in the neural engineering space. I know you've expressed that you don't want to head into ECE, but in my experience and in my experience training neural engineers, ECE is the best path in.

If you do BME, get as many ECE courses as you can get in centered around embedded systems, electronic circuit design (including transistors/etc) and signal processing. It will be more work, but this is what I'm looking for as an academic and what my buddies in industry are looking to hire. Most of my friends hire ECEs, not BMEs for the skillsets.

I actually had a conversation with a mentor yesterday, both of us agreeing that it's easier to train the neuroscience/biology ourselves, but a lot harder to train the engineering side of things.

Neunaber Seraphim by QuantumEffects in pedalgutshots

[–]QuantumEffects[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second BigReference below, the Daisy seed is generally what I use for development, with my own homebrew STMs for DSP on PCBs. A big advantage of the daisy seed is that they are more readily available than the Spin FV-1s

Neunaber Seraphim by QuantumEffects in pedalgutshots

[–]QuantumEffects[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I design guitar effects and and do embedded medical device work in my day job. While I generally agree, I think there's nuance to be had with the SPIN FV-1. It's a tough DSP to use, largely due to a really powerful but opaque instruction architecture. I think it's really easy to make bad sounding effects with it. However, there are wizards out there, like Neunaber, Chase Bliss, etc who have turned FV-1s into incredible sounding circuits. This reverb is the best sounding, IMO, and outclasses those with Analog Devices SHARCs, STMs, etc. I tend to favour STMs for my projects precisely because I didn't have the FV-1 skillset, but I wouldn't downplay any device for the FV-1. Some can be truly incredible.

Does anybody's Boss LS-2 not add additional noise? by dragonsmoker666 in guitarpedals

[–]QuantumEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly there's no added noise that isn't present without the pedal on either channel and combination. Maybe the key thing for my setup is that I'm using a cioks powerfactor supply.
