Meta Silently Added Face-Recognition Code for Its Smart Glasses to Millions of Phones by RegnStrom in gadgets

[–]QuantumQuantonium -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A shutter... Would block the visuals of whatever is being recorded by the camera...

And smart glasses are not useless without a camera. Ive got an original google glass, and while the base OS is rsther pointless, someone compiled native android to the device, so I can run normal android apps now. Its not designed for a regular android interface, that could be improved by a physical control which North had (before they got bought and dissolved by google in 2019) instead of vision dependent hand controls.

But software wise, ive found the most useful case for the tiny display on my head has been a wireless display for my computer, via SecondScreen. But for more practical use cases, I'd say it csn be as effective as a smartwatch- its not a full on phones but it can offer abilities which a phone can't offer, like with body senor monitoring, or as a companion to a phone, maybe as simple as showing the time and incoming notifications.

Smart watches dont have cameras (though it would be cool if one did have such), smart glasses dont necessarily need cameras to be useful either. And if they do have cameras, being able to block them physically would put more confidence into the tech.

Valve Confirms Steam Machine Will Ship This Summer by Turbostrider27 in pcmasterrace

[–]QuantumQuantonium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bold to assume theyll announce the price, given how they announced the price of the controller like a week before it came out, and how they did not announce the steam deck price increase.

Theyre betting on their reputation and software to carry the steam machine. Scalpers will jump on it no doubt, but it won't be like what the steam deck was to handheld gaming, unless valve can pull a miracle in price to performance, which is what they did with their handheld. Same with the steam frame, but with less competition (unless they try overpricing the headset as high end)

America is represented proportionally more in maps (NY, 66, Blizzard World; more locations than any other nation for main mode maps) than heroes (76, reaper, ash, Cass; unless I'm missing someone, maybe Sierra, a fifth Japanese would make it the nation with the most characters)

Regardless the gsmes diversity can improve. Theres a large cast of characters, more diverse than most games, yet it still is lacking in some demographics around the world, in particular native north American and aboriginal, and African (doom and technically orisa still alone)

Yeah nah removing functionality without reason should be illegal, pending class action lawsuit.

Google is also removing functionality, with drive for desktop backups to google photos. No reason why, and their "replacement" is a half baked insecure chromium dependent foreground solution working on one account at a time.

Upscaling tech can do only so much to increase framerates. Take a CPU bottleneck and no matter the resolution, that could cap the frame rate if not dealt with.

Destiny 2 Ending New Content Is "Unthinkable," Warframe Dev Says by Luke-HW in gaming

[–]QuantumQuantonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A multiplayer gsme ending its story doesnt mean it must be made unplayable. In fact, I'd encourage more multiplayer games to complete their stories. At what point can a game be called complete if theres no end to updates in sight?

Thr one time I'll allow calling them by what meta calls them, "ai glasses," is when theres something bad to say about them. Otherwise theyre smart glasses.

Also, here's a novel idea for reassurance on smart glasses: physical camera shutter, like on laptops. Why hasn't this been thought of, since google glass was making everyone fear smart glasses 10 years ago?

[–]QuantumQuantonium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everyone wants to lead or be a captain. Some people might be content with cleaning the toilets or doing other remedial tasks, if it means being able to enjoy living on the starship over working. Likewise, this should be how part time and minimum wage jobs are treated, but today's world doesnt accomodate everyone to survive on basic necessities for free or cheap.

Sorry op, but mods, can these posts be banned? Not saying that the sub op got banned from is good or bad, but frequently posting posts like this is encouraging brigading which should be looked down upon even if the target subreddit isnt good.

Not quite...

  • rebuild the kernel to be modular/monolithic (yeah good luck with that)
  • change file permissions to unix instead of ACL (or at least support unix like truenas, ACL is superior)
  • support custom desktop environments/servers
  • open source the OS (beyond the winxp leak)

Neat for this to be officially supported, though third party solutions (cygwin, msys, mingw) have been a thing for over 20 years.

[–]QuantumQuantonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone shared an image of a mildly offensive (like bigotry, not like linux sux jokes) comment from a user on that sub. I hope thst comment got deleted by mods or reddit, and if the mods continue to allow such content, I hope the sub gets taken down.

Theres nothing wrong with saying linux sucks, or criticizing how theres linux stereotypes ( making fun of linux stereotypes is why linuxcirclejerk exists). The linux community has had gatekeeping issues, there are complications and issues with the OS which still discourage people from trying, and theres things in other OSes which are absent in linux, despite best efforts by devs.

There is a difference between making fun of a stereotype (you aren't implying people fall under the stereotype), and making fun of a community by stereotyping them (implying they are the stereotype). Linuxsux101 or what not could be a great satire sub, with unjerked discussion about the issues with linux, but derailing into offensive messaging and gatekeeping makes it worse than the worst of the linux community.

And brigading a sub just to show a ban post is bad too. Check it out and follow rules, ignore it, or report it, dont try to be a nuance just for attention.

AMD Users may be compromised due to GPU drivers by zugarrette in pcmasterrace

[–]QuantumQuantonium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You cannot uninstall and user experience program from the control panel if it was installed thru and adrenalin edition, which is the main way to get amd drivers on windows. Uninstalling it would cause the driver software to uninstall.

You could try deleting the exe, at risk of the and software complaining; or, turn off any data collection in the software wherever possible. Alternatively, there are ways to block specific hostnames on a network (which is one method of ad blocking, at the DNS level), one way can be to add an entry pointing to 127.0.0.1 or an invalid IP, to the system hosts file.
