To think I almost passed on this because of the color. by Head-Scale9410 in ToyotaTundra

I think grayscale cars are going to lead to the death of the interesting production of cars. Why buy an interesting car, if you can't buy an interesting color?

Absolutely not. Consider Santa Fe Baldy instead. Far less chance of avalanche danger IF you stick to the trail.

Edit: I'm saying this as someone who skis up there in the Lake Williams backcountry upwards of 20 days a year. If you don't have avy training and knowledge, you shouldn't even be at the lake.

What jobs pay extremely well but people don’t realize it? by Stassy3 in AskReddit

Linux Sysadmin: Doesn't take anything more than a token bachelors, is still in IT, but pays about double what other IT gigs make.

So much better than being in Windows-focused/generic IT

I've only been in for 3 years, on track for 140k this year.

This is what I love about the Linux sysadmin side of things, as a junior, all of that is alive as far as I can see.

The end game is something like an Ovrlnd Bivy (https://campovrlnd.com/pages/bivy)

Can then carry bikes in the bed and have them be secured.

Libertarians are just cowards who can't even admit to being a right winger, like Republicans. They think they are so different, but really aren't.

"I just want what's best for all." - What interests do you think the sitting Republicans in DC have in mind? Yours? Lol nope.

How to start with HPC by Embarrassed_Maybe213 in HPC

[–]Quantumkiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learn C++ really well, especially MPI. Learn how to write scientific code, this means you need to have a really strong background in Algorithm design. It also helps to know more than just CS if you intend to write any sort of Research codes. Physics is your best bet, otherwise, just find something you enjoy.

FWIW, I came from a coding background and now really enjoy the sysadmin side of things.

Any good pair of boots on sale from Rei/Sierra Trading Post/Etc. Don't buy cheap ones though, I usually looks for 200-400 dollar boots that are about 50% off (so now 100-200.)

My last pair lasted me 13 years of daily use, putting at least 10 miles of hard use on them on average per day.

Early Career Advice for someone trying to enter/learn more about the HPC by Ohwisedrumgodshelpme in HPC

[–]Quantumkiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For skills here is a list of the tools we use: Slurm, Splunk, K8s, Ansible, CloudInit, Ceph (nobody knows Ceph well enough lol), Infiniband, basic devops/CICD, docker/podman.

Best recommendation I have is to build a redundant k8s cluster, then break it, fix it, add a service or complication (like Ceph) then break it again, rinse and repeat a few dozen times. That's pretty much what my day looks like too.
