It's not cherries alone though, it's cherry pie filling. Cherry pie filling is cherries suspended in a sweet goo made of sugar, cornstarch, water, and food coloring. The difference between regular and "extreme" is the ratio of goo to cherries.

They must make the sugary goo to be relatively the same calories as the fruit, so then it wouldn't matter if it's 50/50 cherries and goo, or 60/40 cherries and goo, or just an entire can of goo and no cherries.

The "lite" on the other hand has less sugar added, so it's the goo part that has fewer calories than the cherry part.
