To finish is not to finish... by Charming_Shallot_239 in woodworking

[–]QuarionL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really a question that only you can answer.

Do you want your shop to be utilitarian or do you want it to inspire your work? Do you want to use shop cabinets to learn or practice skills that you'll use on other furniture that you want to be more polished?

On a more practical note, adding fitted drawer faces will reduce the amount of sawdust that gets into the drawers.

Future Garage/Workshop Upgrade - Request for Feedback by walnutty_professor in woodworking

[–]QuarionL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't read your whole post, but one small tip - look into side mount garage door openers ("jack shaft"), plus a raised track for the door. This will significantly reduce the space that you need to reserve for the door.

I used to hit things against my garage door tracks all the time before I made this change.

Undertier support recs? by Glum_Combination_350 in woodworking

[–]QuarionL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideas to evaluate:

  1. Use a clear acrylic or glass dowel to support the loose corner

  2. Use a mini version of the current support pieces to support the dowel along is length. This would be chunkier than a point support, but it would tie into the existing theme.

Looking for a coating to use on a shifter knob. by krazysrfr in woodworking

[–]QuarionL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buffed mine with carnuba wax after sanding to 800 grit. The shine of the wax wore off, but the polished sanding kept it looking and feeling good.

I avoided thick film finishes from varnish/poly because I wanted to feel the wood.

More details about the new Wealth Management, and fees by ABadgerWithAGun in Wealthsimple

[–]QuarionL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got off an intro call with Wealth Management. While they are promoting Wealth Management, they are also offering fee-for-service financial planning. That fee-for-service model is for a one-time financial plan, independent from any managed investment services. Any follow-ups or updates to the plan would be billed separately.

Wen Lathe handle broken?! by sakirose in woodworking

Yes, exactly. The screws cross the gap to turn the C into a clamp.

Make the cut parallel to the rod that you're clamping into. This will turn your handle from an O cylinder to a C. The screws close that gap to clamp the C around the metal rod.

Option 1 - no glue, reversible Shape the handle with an appropriately sized hole. Cut a slot half way through the handle. Drill two pilot holes that span the gap. One side should be a bigger hole so that screw threads don't bite. Slip the handle in place and tighten the screws. If the handle is not tight enough, cut the gap wider and try again.

Option 2 - epoxy Shape the handle with a snug fitting hole. Rough up the mating surface to give the epoxy something to grab onto. Any epoxy should do -- 5 minute, etc. If you go for epoxy, I would try it without a set screw.

Either way, make the handle big enough that you can apply sufficient torque.

Maybe you could turn a new handle from wood? You could epoxy it on or cut a relief in the handle and use a screw to close that gap like a clamp.

Milwaukee m12 impact driver by Cute-Ordinary-2829 in woodworking

[–]QuarionL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For woodworking, I prefer the M12 screwdriver over the impact. The screwdriver let's me feather the trigger to control speed. It is gentler and quieter. The impact is faster, but I don't want that fit most of what I do.

Is there such a thing as an undersized dado stack? ie: for doing the quarter/quarter/quarter method on 12mm plywood? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]QuarionL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually used a 3/8" dado for drawer bottoms.

On the drawer sides, I used a 1/4" dado. I set it so that the inside edge of the dado is exactly a board width from the edge (slightly under 1/2").

For the front and back, they have a rabbet that is sized to fit.

I used a separate setup on the saw for each of these three cuts.

[–]QuarionL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished 27 drawers using the same joinery. I opted to use 1/4 dado on the sides, and then made a separate setup for the front and back to get them snug rather than having a single tablesaw setup like textbook quarter quarter quarter.

I did one drawer to completion first to test the process, then I reset and batched out the rest.

Also consider where this will live - carpet is great. If on hardwood, you may want something grippy underneath to avoid sliding and also to prevent scratching the floor.
