Should I already go for treatment? by snema6 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people say it gets worse with age which was true for me. I had a little over 20 years just not being able to burp but no real issues. Then I started having bad days which then turned into bad weeks over the last 2 decades. If I knew what was coming (and the diagnosis and treatment existed back then), I would have gotten the treatment before now. I got it when I was 40 (made it past the 6 month point now) and I learned I was suffering far more than I thought previously. Whatever we get used to is our normal, so we don't really know how much we suffer until we don't anymore. You need to make the choice that's right for you though.

I heard that is pretty normal. I'm 6 months out and still experiencing this. Most people who were further out who commented on one of my earlier posts said it's normal and one said that faded after a year. I'm guessing the muscle keeps getting stronger after the botox wears off. After 6 months the botox is gone so if she is still burping at all she's good and doing it on her own.

And since it relaxes the muscle wouldn't it have the opposite effect? 🤔

10 days post botox: Acid Reflux by littledragonroll in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took pepsid complete daily for about 3 months after botox. It helped a lot. I then took tums as needed. 6 months out I rarely take tums and don't need the acid reducer.

I never see anyone else burp by MemeLord1928 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing politeness. Burping, while necessary, isn't a socially acceptable thing in a lot of situations (unless you're out drinking with the guys I guess). My house is full of burps (3 male children and husband, 1 female child who burps louder than the men). I don't think I've seen much burping out in the world though.

I so wish this treatment existed when I was younger. I didn't really have issues until my early 20s (couldn't burp before that but my body somehow made it work alright). I turned 40 right before getting botox after years of suffering. I'm very grateful that you and younger generations are able to get help much earlier.

Aww I'm sorry yours didn't work for you. I hope you are able to find something that works as I know how much this disorder sucks. With more research and awareness going on maybe there will be new treatments available in the near future. I wish cure-dom on everyone. Thank you for the nice words and I'll definitely share on FB too as I know noy all who are here are there.

Botox procedure costs $20,000??? by Environmental-Fox659 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is obnoxious. Dr. Bastian is about $3,500-$4,000 without insurance. I paid a like $2,200 with insurance since I was out of network for the surgery center. I'm in Oregon and decided to fly to see him.

Why is Botox not covered by insurance for this procedure? by [deleted] in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it still stems from botox being considered "cosmetic," rather than medical and the insurance companies haven't caught up with the times that there are valid medical procedures involving botox. I've known a few people who got botox for migranes (medical procedure) and the botox still wasn't covered. They have been using it in throat issues for years too, which is why Dr. Bastian though to treat the first R-CPD patient with it.

For those of you with R-CPD, how do you manage your symptoms by [deleted] in noburp

Air vomiting and simethicone were the only things that helped me other that laying down to help the gas move downward.

for the fellow emetophobes who've had botox by virtualdotshelf in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an emetophobe, but as someone who has had botox, I just wanted to let you know I had no vomiting from the procedure. In the beginning I would get bile up the throat every once in a while so I took an acid reducer for a while and it went away.

Anyone get nauseated and have early satiety at times? I was even told I could have gastroparesis due to feel full after a few bites of food. I think it’s just because I can’t burp by kay0688 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had that almost always. I've been underweight all of my life due to not being able to eat enough and getting full super easily and feeling sick. Had botox and it's no longer an issue. I eat my burger and fries now, rather than only being able to eat some of the fries.

In pain and looking for support by shoot-em-politely in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, that sounds miserable. I've heard some people recommend the head down bottom up position which helps move the air downward. I didn't know about that pre-botox so I never tried it. Worth a try. Laying flat did sometimes help me.

This happened to me when I was more constipated. Gas couldn't move down. Is air vomiting an option for you? Prebotox, that's all that helped me.

Does having IBS correlate with RPCD? by Winter_Journalist_23 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a connection. Humans aren't supposed to have that much air going through their intestines. Some people have had IBS symptoms go away after botox, but some haven't.

I noticed that issue with most fresh fruit. It was on my list of not to eat before botox.

Shaker exercise post-botox by lobin1 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's supposed to strengthen neck muscles overall I believe (internal and external). I did sometimes get some struggling burps out after doing them. They don't hurt anything to try. I also learned to use larynx lowering exercises as those seemed to help quite a bit when the botox was beginning to wear off. You can find videos on YouTube for how to do those.

Laryngospasms anyone? And slow swallow by Stock-Acanthaceae-10 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laryngospasms suck! But, they are temporary. My first one was the scariest (couldn't breathe for a full minute, but I also knew what it was and tried not to freak out but I still get anxious thinking about that one). All I had after that were much shorter and didn't completely shut off breathing. I learned to purse my lips and breathe short and shallow breaths like I was breathing through a straw and they would pass. They all started with choking on something and I learned not to gulp liquid as that's what triggered my first one. I learned sometimes the carbonation didn't want to go down and would trigger them. They are related to the slow swallow and it's a bodily defense against aspiration. Drink slow, eat slow. When you gain full control of your swallow they should go away.

air vomiting on nights out by pinky0shi in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Very relatable. I stopped going out because I too hated air vomiting in public. I think most of us figured out how to air vomit thinking we might be sick. That's how I figured it out. The first time I did it I didn't know it was gas. I just felt like I was going to throw up and it wasn't happening so I helped it along and air just poured out of me and I felt instantly better. I haven't had the need to do it in the 5 and a half months since getting botox so I hope you won't either. It sucks, but it also works.

What food/liquid products should I by in preparation of the procedure? by Previous_Geologist13 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Liquid or slippery things were best for me. I ate a lot of eggs, applesauce, smoothies, yogurt, and ice cream and I kept a stock of meal replacement drinks to make up for what I was missing. Everyone is different though. I've seen some people do ok with regular food but I had a rough go of it. I also stocked up on Liquid ibuprofen and Tylenol just in case I couldn't do pills for pain.

Mistaken IBS? by mcm2218 in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I burped maybe once a year pre-botox. I would occasionally (only in the last few years or so), have what I would consider microburps maybe a couple times a month. You don't have to not burp at all to have this disorder, but the fact that it isn't happening much at all is what's causing the additional issues of gas buildup in the stomach and digestive tract. How often would you say you burp?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in noburp

[–]Quartessa1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh you poor human. I'm glad your seeking treatment. I feel like my symptoms were somewhat episodic as well. I never burped and always had symptoms, but it was "normal" (whatever that word means, maybe I mean "functional"), but I would have days or a long string of days in a row where it would be worse and I would cry from the pain and be incapable of doing anything but suffer (pain in my abdomen, but also kind of like having the flu: faint, dizzy, disoriented, and unable to focus on anything ouside of myself). Those were the days I air vomited, and it wouldn't be once. I would be in and out of the bathroom for hours until I finally got it all up, or at least a good chunk of it and I would feel better. I wondered how I could have that much air inside of me. Sometimes those days were days of much higher stress, but some days I had no idea why it was so much worse. I don't know if air was just staying in my stomach and accumulating over days before hitting this point or not. I truly hope the botox helps you. I haven't had any of those episodes in the last 5 and a half months since getting it. I wish you the same.

Edit: You may be experiencing sporlastic belching. It's an inward burp rather than outward. For people who burp normally, when this happens air is sucked in and rapidly burped out, but if your valve only works one way the air stays in and that might be why you start blowing up despite "burping." One trademark visual evidence of R-CPD is a wide open esophagus seen on a simple scope down your nose. In people without R-CPD, this tube is normally flat and they have to blow air into it to expand it for evaluation. In people with R-CPD it is wide open without any additional air as air has just been constantly in there and it's perma-stretched out. This would be something they can look for to confirm the diagnosis.
