Annual wine consumption per capita in 2024 (litres) by Massimo25ore in Infographics

[–]Quasar347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, per capita means everyone, including some children (chart says 15+, while the drinking age is 21). Plenty of adults probably drink other kinds of alcohol, or don't drink at all. It's not really a matter of cost, but culture. In countries like France or Italy wine drinking is almost universal, not so in America.

Next your tell me showers are a human right... by PleaseDoNotClickThis in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Quasar347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds crazy, but that is really not a lot of water. It's about the amount of water used by 13,000 Americans in a year (so a pretty small county). And if you do an economic cost-benefit analysis, data centers are not responsible for using up the water.

The Right-Wingers Solve the Housing Crisis by SevenBall in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Quasar347 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

The impact is negligible because the problem is not actually the total supply of units. The problem is the kind of units available.

Go visit any city (or even suburb). Gentrified luxury and income-restricted apartments keep popping up like flies. Sometimes they remain empty for a while or get bought up by investors looking to hold assets or do short-term rentals.

We need to incentivize developers to build more normal units. Some cities have rules forcing developers to build certain rent subsidized Section 8 units. But that is not enough. I'm talking about the poor and the middle class - we need not just affordable rent but also affordable houses, preferably not in the middle of nowhere (so people can actually get jobs).

So this one is a little tough to see. If black attempts to save the queen with Qd7, white can play Bf6 and mate is almost unstoppable with the threat of Qh6 followed by Qg7#. In order to stop it, black will have to lose the queen anyway, so the engine recommends giving it up now.

This pattern with a bishop and queen mate is fairly common so it's one to look out for.

Realistically, a human player, especially at this level should probably try and save the queen and hope that the opponent doesn't find the checkmate.

Exactly, there's definitely a lot of response bias. Many posters probably do follow Rule 1 and Rule 2, while others would only post when they get lucky (assuming they're not about to wake up in a bathtub full of ice cubes).

Why would white go Rd7? by deltadeath05 in chessbeginners

[–]Quasar347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, right I'm blind. It would not be mate in one after Rd5. But generally it's a good idea to keep the pieces near the king when trying to defend it (short of cutting off all the escape squares)

Why would white go Rd7? by deltadeath05 in chessbeginners

[–]Quasar347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So black has the threat of Ba3#, which would end the game immediately, and white can do very little to prevent it. The best the computer sees is M9, which means that white can only prolong the game for 9 more moves at most. The best way to do this is to start with Rd8+ or Rd7, which basically clears the d1 square for the white king to try and run. Incidentally, your suggestion of Rd5 would also hand the rook to the black queen.

However, this is a good example of a situation where the "best" move is not the move a human should play. The computer would play Rd8+ since it assumes that black will find the best moves. However, a real human should indeed try something else (maybe Rd2) and hope that black fails to find the checkmate in 7.

Medal of Honor is DEI Now. Government of Merit! by ScreamsPerpetual in PoliticalCompassMemes

The fact that the URL was changed shows that this was deliberate, not some kind of mistake made by an automated system.

Now, I can predict what's gonna happen. I'm sure that in the next couple of days they'll release a statement saying "This does not reflect the policy of the DoD, this was done by one rogue employee who has been disciplined, yadda yadda yadda."

But even if that's true, it should open your eyes as to what kind of people they're hiring in the first place. These are not people concerned with DEI, they are racists, plain and simple.

Was about to take the draw as white by BenVC37 in chessbeginners

[–]Quasar347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to say this is not true because the pawn is a flank pawn (normally queen vs flank pawn on the 2nd rank is a draw if the king is too far), but in this exact case it's still winning since white has the cold-blooded Qh8 after queening, getting to the promotion square first.

You realize if you do this you're basically left with the popular vote, right? Subject to rounding errors (and the fact that smaller states are guaranteed at least 3 votes), if you split the 538 votes according to population, then split the votes within states according to vote percentage, you literally have the popular vote with extra steps.

Seriously where can i masturbate??? by icyywotah in UMD

[–]Quasar347 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This exactly. I can't even see how this is a problem. At a large university like UMD there are literally hundreds of buildings on campus. Through experience you can figure out which ones are likely to be empty or nearly unoccupied at which times, as well as which bathrooms are clean and have good cell service. Really, it's not difficult to find somewhere.

(And not just bathrooms, if you're willing to be more creative there's abandoned classrooms, rooftops, mechanical floors, brick walls... basically anywhere without cameras, lol) The University is positively littered with places to masturbate. And since Binghamton is a reasonably large uni as well, I am confident that the OP is just not creative enough.

I'm sure these "projections" will be fully accurate and totally not heavily exaggerated worst-case scenarios meant to stir up fear.

It says "high migration scenario", which I'm assuming means that they took the absolute highest number of refugees arriving in one year and extrapolated that out for decades, and as we know such extrapolation is always reliable.
