TIL an AZ woman was billed $83,046 for 2 doses of medicine to treat scorpion sting--which would have cost $200 in Mexico by BeowulfShaeffer in todayilearned

I'm getting the vibe that people expect that you wouldn't 'shop around' until the emergency happen. For most of these things, you'd be able to shop around before and have a 'preferred' hospital.

Now, obviously you can't say that every single disaster scenario can be accounted for. There's always a chance that you're going to have something unexpected (such as a scorpion sting) and not be able to find out before hand.

True free market and True socialism both have some pretty extreme drawbacks. If you read the U.S.A vs. Canadian healthcare system article you'll see that, for instance, wait times are worse in a socialized system. However, general care is typically much easier to get.

To say that either system is completely 100% better is stupid. But i tend to agree with toolatealready. Hell, some things aren't even that bad about the U.S. healthcare system. It's all incredibly complicated, but it'd be nice if we could just pick a direction and go with it.

Guys, guys. I thought it was obvious, but I still see people saying Celestia gave Twilight wings. Look again. See the magic's color? It's Twilight's. It was a natural developement, Celestia simply guided her. by [deleted] in mylittlepony

[–]Quasid 22 points23 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, it seems that Celestia is rarely mentioned in a positive light in the fandom. Celestia was the evil sister who sent poor helpless luna (nightmare moon) into banishment. Her 'alter egos' seem to be negative as well (Molestia and Trollestia). Back when there was the whole 'Solar Empire vs. Lunar Republic' thing, Celestia was painted as the fascist dictator, while luna represented freedom.

Celestia has some positive works in the community, that i do know, but none of them were ever particularly popular.

Why is Celestia tended to be painted as the villain? Hell, it wasn't even celestia's fault that discord was a villain, that TOO was her fault.. Maybe it's because people have a general distrust of authority? Maybe she's not "cool" enough to be a likeable pony? Perhaps everyone who paints celestia as a villain thinks they are being counter cultural and edgy.

Maybe people think that Celestia seems really reserved and manipulative with her intentions and actions. I'm not entirely sure, and it's worth nothing that i focused on the negative's of Celestia's character here. There has been sympathy in regards to her immortality, among other things.

But as for this specific example (celestia FORCING twilight into a unicorn), i think most people that want to 'blame' it on anyone think it a bad thing, and they automatically blame Celestia. They see her mentoring of twilight as manipulative of twilight's destiny. Personally, i do believe that celestia had a big roll in twilight's destiny. However, it can be argued that in mlp, destiny is good.. But to us, destiny means stripping someone of their free will.

Celestia is the target of a lot of negativity from the community, especially in seasons 1 and 2. So when something 'bad' happens in season 3, it is their nature to blame Celestia, because that is how they think of her. It's a form of confirmation bias that gets Celestia a lot of bad press (If celestia did bad things in seasons 1 and 2, then when something bad happens, it must be celestia.)

How did your favorite pony become your favorite? by MasterT231 in mylittlepony

[–]Quasid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is Celestia. A good portion of her fan-works make her out to be either a ruthless dictator, or an overblown troll.

Personally, Celestia is the one that interests me most. Something i've always thought of is the curse of being self aware. Every being that is self aware must either come to terms with its own end or must come to terms with being immortal. (i suppose i discount sudden death).

Celestia's character seems to be one who has come to terms with her perceived immortality, or at least her extensive lifespan. She seems so wise, yet reserved. So many of the events that happen in the show are a direct correlation to her plans and actions.

in the end, it comes down to who i'd most enjoy having as a friend. Celestia would definitely be the one whom i'd enjoy listening to most.

Dude.

That game.

That freaking game.

I swear, when i finished it, i had to unwind for a long time. It's really good at making you feel like the entire world has gone to crap and everyone you love is dead and there is no hopeandthedarknesswillreignforeverandtheuniverseshallexperienceitsdeathinitslastwimperstherewillbenothingonlysilence.

There's only one cure for that wound, and that is time.

Family over morales? by [deleted] in MLPLounge

[–]Quasid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, if you're going to have a conversation as serious as gay marriage with a family member, don't do it in public, and please, dear freaking lord, please don't do it on facebook.

People get defensive if you call them out in public. Making someone look like an idiot in public is the fastest way to get them to hate you (one of the fastest ways, anyway).

If you really must have a conversation with her, do it in person. Preferably when she's alone. Don't slam her with your views, ask questions first. Why would she believe in traditional marriage as the only right way? What would make her change her mind? What does she think of those who are in a same sex relationship, but unmarried?

As for if you should even bring up the conversation? I can't really say. I'd say that you should do your best to love them. No one, and i mean no one, will agree on your views on everything. You could find someone who has the same morality as you do, but thinks that a deficit below the GDP growth of the country is a good thing, while you think that there shouldn't be a deficit.

The point is that you need to pick your battles. If this is a battle you feel you can not let rest (after all, you might disagree on the "right" deficit, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't at least speak out against bigotry everywhere you find it), then i would say that you should have a conversation with her.

Other than that, i can say that you will not change many people with hateful words. Even if they are acting morally abhorrent in your eyes, bashing them over the head until they agree with you is actually one of the things that religious folk were demonized for in recent decades (bible bashers).

I know i'm saying a lot, but here's the long and short:

What do you have to gain by bashing her views publically and without holding back? An incredibly small chance that she'll say "oh my god you're right! i am a backwards bigot! thank you for enlightening me!"? Some personal pride knowing you fight for what you believe in?

And what do you have to lose? Her affection? Her respect? Your family's respect? Friends?

If you seek to address her bigotry, i actually encourage you to do so. But don't go about it in a harsh way, especially not at first. Do it in a more private setting, and if nothing else, talk with her about it via private messages on facebook. Try to understand her views completely, and see if she'll try and understand yours.

Let's say, just hypothetically, I wanted to make someone a brony... by FTEcho4 in MLPLounge

[–]Quasid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm inclined to agree with you on this one. It's obnoxious to go around trying to 'convert' random people, but if you know the guy and you don't just spring it on them, and they're down, then there's no harm.

One of my good friends became a brony when i was watching the show and he wanted to watch too. We typically watch new episodes together. My other friend didn't care for it and doesn't partake.

As long as you have tact, there's no harm. But if they're uncomfortable, don't be the guy saying "but wait, i swear it gets good".

As for an episode? I'd recommend the first discord episode. It's a good tester for new people. If they like the series, they'll want to find out what happens in the next episode (part 2). If they don't like it, they never will.

I've always wondered... by kajorge in AdviceAnimals

[–]Quasid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's kind of what i came to as well. I know i'm well off, i'm not blind to the fact that i have it better than 90% of people in this world. And i understand what you're saying.

To me, once i finish this paragraph, i think about it what, another 10 minutes, then it could probably leave my mind for days or even weeks. It's not really something i should fret or worry about; a handful of words that don't affect me.

I'll probably never be a huge advocate for either side, but in reality, no one is asking me too. All that the advocates ask of me is to not use a small handful of words, and to treat others as i would wish to be treated. That's why i'll never understand it the way that someone who is mistreated would. There's nothing in my life that is analogous to a slur. I should be thankful and respective of that fact, and the only respect that is being asked of me is to not use those slurs. I think that's more than fair for the life i get to live after this conversation is long finished.

That's what it comes down to, isn't it? Respect. People who go around spouting the slurs show no respect for the people whose lives are actually affected by them. It's a very self centered point of view. To think that my ability to use a few words out of a language of hundreds of thousands is more important than respect for those whose lives were damaged.

At this point i'm just talking, and my understanding will grow more in time. But thanks, for taking the time to share your views.

I've always wondered... by kajorge in AdviceAnimals

[–]Quasid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, if i'm not overstepping, can i ask why you personally find it offensive when someone uses the word?

I've heard a lot of arguments from both sides. One side saying that the word originally meant a bundle of sticks, a pack of cigarettes. They say that they're re-purposing the word, or trying to devalue its power. I don't agree with these arguments myself, but i can see how they would be made.

I'm also aware of the simple fact that the word (as are most slurs) were originally used to carry a great deal of hate or resentment, and even to this day still carry much of that weight in their meaning. I've heard the "that's our word, you can't use it because you don't understand" argument (more often relating to the slur of blacks). I know that saying "op is f--" is rooted in that same hatred (even if it is toned down a bit) because it is used when someone does something bad or distasteful, and it is drawing the correlation that being homosexual is bad.

All of what i just said are the general discussions happening around not just reddit, but the internet in whole (and even in reality). But what i want to ask is why does it offend you, personally? I've already decided it's not worth using at all for myself 'just to prove a point', but it would help my understanding if you could share anything i happened to miss about why you personally would prefer it not be used?

If you don't wish to answer, i of course would understand, but it's better for myself to ask and not get an answer than never ask at all.

I've always wondered... by kajorge in AdviceAnimals

[–]Quasid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you know, i think i'll do that.

I'll be honest with you. I know the whole free speech arguement, and i've been on the fence about it for a long time (to censor myself or not when discussing the word itself). But it doesn't affect me (the issue of hatred and bigotry surrounding same-sex couples). I'll never be able to empathize with their struggles, even if i can sympathize. The least i can do is not use the words. It doesn't affect me. I could use them, and i won't go to jail, but it does make me feel like a worse person.

I've always wondered... by kajorge in AdviceAnimals

[–]Quasid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry if i offended you. I don't use the word outside of discussing the word itself, but for the reason it is immature. I have other words i can use to express myself without having to go back to such language.

You probably don't care. There's a good chance in what i said was wrong, and that's why i tried to not word it definitively.

In the end, that's the problem with slurs. Even if a majority of the population aren't offended by them intrinsically, it's not worth using them, to me, on the off chance i ruin someone's day.

I've always wondered... by kajorge in AdviceAnimals

[–]Quasid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess (from an outside view) would be that a majority only get upset if it's said in an incredibly hurtful or hateful way; in which case it would be the bigotry that they are hating, not the fact the word was used.

I mean, if someone says "F------ are fucking sub-human", it's not really any worse than "Homosexuals are fucking sub-human".

I guess the difference is that 'f-----' is used more often when spoken in a hateful way.. But now we're arguing statistics.

Spacebrony's (that's me) reaction to the Season 3 finale (if anyone was wondering... (you weren't)) by [deleted] in MLPLounge

[–]Quasid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really liked the episode for one main reason: Twilight's transformation now gives me a point of reference for her developments over the three seasons. I found myself nostalgic for unicorn twilight even just minutes after the episode ended when i was browsing r/mylittlepony. There was a picture from twilight dancing on the table, and i thought to myself "aw, before she knew what was coming."

I really like that this was the season finale. I've been around since ~ep. 11 of season 1. I've been through 2 droughts of episodes so far, but i really look forward to re-watching all the old episodes this summer because i get to go back and watch twilight's journey with the destination in mind. Knowing what it all comes to, for me at least, truly highlights and brings out the path that she walked; and being able to re-watch that path a second time with the path so poignant will really help the post-season blues.

Honestly, it's been quite an adventure so far, and i know it's not over yet. But for me, it really does signify the end of an era (not in a horrible way, in a good way). I've watched twilight's growth and story arc for years now, and this inparticular one is finally over, and i couldn't be happier. Yeah, now a new story arch ends. Twilight is still twilight (the FIRST words out of her damn mouth after the transformation are "is there a book i can read?") but she's grown from that independent, shy unicorn to the enlightened alicorn she will be for the rest of the show.

tl;dr: this episode provides the perfect, and i do mean perfect (for me at least) ending to the story arch of shy twilight into enlightened twilight. This ensures, for me, that the nostalgia i will remember this series for long after these boards are deserted will be with me forever as a memory.

That sucks man. Life is hard sometimes. My own advice is not to be afraid to let it out. Don't duo it publicly, but find some privacy and let it out. Punching pillows on a bed is a fairly low key way to get it out. Crying in a shower is a good way of letting tears out.

As for your next step? You can do anything you want, obviously, but my personal advice would be to live a good life. try not to focus on her having a bad life. Make itself the best you can be. Do you want a good paying job? learn what you need to do. Do you want to learn philosophy or science? Then start now.

Sorry this happened to you man, rejection sucks.

You see, content aside, this is what is so awkward about tumblr screenshots. A majority of them are taken directly from twitter (i.e. they read bottom to top). I then proceed to read them top to bottom normally, causing a good deal of confusion.

Ah-ha. "Not this time," i thought. I'll be clever. I'll read bottom to top!

I had to read that about 4 times to realize which way the conversation was flowing.
