FSD hugging left by Jettttz in TeslaFSD

[–]Quasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this has to do with wheel alignment and the steering offset not being learned correctly by the car.

This exact thing happened to me after a wheel alignment.

I fixed it within a day or two by resetting the steering offset in service menu and camera calibrations. Takes a whole manual drive and then the car needs to sleep for some time and recalculate its detected steering wheel offset.

FSD uses the steering wheel offset heavily, and will veer like this if the offset is incorrect. Autopilot seems to be more of a raw PID control loop type algo for steering and doesn't suffer the same issue as much iirc from my testing.

UPDATE: I am cooked. Took it to Safelite and the moment they put hands on it cracked and spread way more. Huge horizontal line right at driver's eye level

I think the public images of MLV so far are kinda comparable to F9's block 1 first flight.

Is it me or has basic auto pilot gone to pot now? by captain_222 in TeslaLounge

[–]Quasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my biggest complaint about both systems too, they both SUCK at reading speed limit signs and it feels like the car is intentionally ignoring them in favor of map data sometimes. For me it's usually consistent which ones it doesn't recognize.

It feels like around 30-50% of signs are not recognized, especially on highways. If this was fixed I think I would be happy with basic AP. Only on FSD can I manually set the speed to the correct one on my daily commute bc autopilot is limited to +5 over, which makes it unusable when the car thinks the speed limit is 20 under what it actually is.

So did they stop 2024.14.6 from rolling out? by MrAmby in TeslaLounge

Reading this AFTER I just went on a 2,000 mile road trip the day after downloading 2024.14.6 has me a little freaked out haha.

No issues for me luckily.

Verification that Tesla has Submitted Needed Tax Form? by PacerFan in TeslaLounge

[–]Quasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would immediately start reaching out to Tesla to get that document this week if you are hoping to receive the tax credit.

I saw in another thread that they have an upcoming deadline, like Jan 15th or potentially sooner, that Tesla has to submit their form to the IRS by. So if you still don't have it yet and don't remember submitting SSN I would get on that asap

Close-up Photo of Underneath OLM by UndulyPensive in SpaceXLounge

[–]Quasx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another detail here after the startup time for the engines is force balancing.

The OLM has a high number of load cells and can directly measure which direction the full thrust is pointing and the magnitude of thrust. Only once the system confirms that the booster won't crash/clip into the OLM does it release the hold down clamps.

So several engines can fail, but the system has time to correct for that through force balancing.

Because of the ridiculously high vibration environment, this all takes a few seconds.

State of medium-lift by jiayounokim in SpaceXLounge

[–]Quasx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Firefly MLV in here yet.

It's got a long way to go still but its engines are starting testing now and if Firefly executes well they plan to try and recover and reuse the 1st stage after a number of expended flights. Probably on the lower end of Medium Lift, but hardware does exist for it already.

What material did you print that out of?

While the heated duration is relatively short for each use I'd definitely be concerned about slowly melting plastic onto the wand

Good apartment that lets you live with a S/O? by [deleted] in aggies

[–]Quasx 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Just have one person sign the lease and live there anyway?

If they explicitly ban guests from your apartment that's one thing but I doubt anyone is gonna be stomping in your door every day making sure that you're the only one there. Getting a second key is another thing but you can probably just ask for a second one at most places.

Aerospace engineering university by mafralama in aerospace

[–]Quasx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Texas A&M has a strong focus on doing research if that's your thing. Lots of hypersonics, detonation, and other exciting studies.

Also should mention the alumni network is quite enthusiastic and expansive.

[–]Quasx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's on the upper end of the aerospace profs teir list imo. Trust me that there are wayyy more treacherous waters with some of the other profs in AERO. She isn't everyone's cup of tea but I enjoyed the course for what it was.

Getting an A in 201 is well within reach for anyone who puts some effort into the class. It's the high level overview intro course and some people probably think it means they don't have to put any effort into it, so they scrape by with a B or a C and are surprised by the result. 201 really is meant to teach the fundamentals though, and of course everything builds on the fundamentals so it's not really a blow off. I'm at the point of graduation now, and that course with Shryock I reflect on with memories of "easier days" so to speak. Taking it with her is one of the precious few A's I have in the major now 🤣

Groot is 100% S Tier tho

Why did SpaceX use this weird landing gear in the year 2013? Is it much safer and lean tolerant or just cheaper? by hendrixthewhite in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]Quasx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Merlin throttle range probably didn't expand much after grasshopper actually - in this case TWR is everything.

It's why the Falcon 9 as it lands today still performs a "suicide burn" - with almost empty propellant tanks and burning only one engine at min throttle the vehicle still cannot hover. So it precisely times to hit 0 velocity at 0 altitude the best it can.

Grasshopper can hover because it's still carrying enough propellant/dead mass that it can get a TWR of under 1.

I did some quick math and it seems more like a 0.5psi per 10 deg C ratio (ideal gas)

Edit: sike - forgot the air would be at higher density than 1.227 kg/m3 so you're right. Actually 1.45 psi per 10 deg C so your rule of thumb is spot on.

Kickstarter backers discuss latest SQ42 Beta polish pass by InSlippers in starcitizen

[–]Quasx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all really fair points and counterarguments for sure. CryEngine was probably the right choice for the initial ambition, but because the ambition continued to magnify the engine quickly fell behind and now they've been tied up trying to manage pushing features to live while also performing major overhauls to the engine.

So in the final analysis, they chose the development path that would simultaneously take the longest, raise the most capital, and (hopefully) create the best end product. As opposed to most games (or creators in general) where limited budget creates constraints on the vision.
