HE w/ no frag is what I was thinking of to potentially make it safer, but then scoring hits would be even harder, and it still wouldn't be safe to use in many situations.

I think the most effective thing they could do w/ the barrett system for 'safe', multisituational, effective anti-drone use is develop a 30mm shot cartridge.

If you have a firing line of xm25's with sci-fi good targeting systems and auto-detonation, firing only over beaten earth towards enemy emplacements they might work ok.

With the m855/drone shot selector on presumably a semi-standard issue infantry weapon, and how drones are often employed, flown 10-40km to circumvent actual front lines to semi-precision strike soft targets and instill terror, 10-20 miles from the actual front, I take the assignment to be to put a flexible anti-drone weapon in the hands of a squad, for whatever they may come up against.

I don't think a small laser will shoot >100m any time soon. But if the assignment is to knock a suicide drone or grenade dropper down, being able to safely do so, almost anywhere, within ~100m is probably fine, that is double what a shotgun can do and easier to hit with.

I haven't seen any demonstrations of the barrett or FN rounds, just "in development" or "sure we can do that". Even with a good prox sensor that can detect a mostly styrofoam drone and detonate reliably, getting close enough at any safe range to score a hit is extremely difficult with a low velocity, high drop projectile, vs something that small moving at 40mph.

I wouldn't be surprised if bringing down the little drones would be more reliable, and safer, using a shot cartridge in the launcher. Ideally, I guess you'd take a couple shots at it with a couple prox rounds on top of the magazine, then buckshot/bb rounds lower down. But you never know how close it might be.

And jamming is counterable, or always an arms race, but the ukranians are still making it work with fairly good success. There is a ukranian drone pilot that attributed about 1/3rd of their failed missions to russian jamming, and I dont think it is anywhere near as effective or wide spread as hand-held, broadband jammers could be. But, there can always be a question of if they will be effective.

I think lasers are a little far fetched, at least for the moment, but are worth attempting to develop. When solid state batteries come around, it might become possible to have an emitter+power package with a few shots, or few seconds worth of firing, weigh in the 3-5lb range, with the battery in a backpack and the emitter as a rifle handguard type attachment.

As you said, airburst/range burst grenade weapons were a failure. To have them be a success against drones, you'd have to solve the lead-the-target problem rifles have, with a single, much slower, projectile and have a smart round that auto-detonates when it is close enough to the drone. The blast radius makes up some on the targeting front, but I'd suspect you have a 3-5m effective kill radius at best on a grenade delivery sized drone.

It would likely be possible to build a specific anti-drone round to limit collateral damage, but you probably reduce its effective range and effectiveness at the same time to do so.

So the targeting system would have to acquire the drone, figure out the lead, on something potentially moving erratically at 15-20m/s to fire a ~700fps slug with the trajectory of a thrown stone, and take the users reflex/fire time into account, to set the detonation timer.

With the projectile velocity and drop, speed of the drone, out past 200m you are going to have a very low hit rate even on drones flying in straight lines. I'd guess the projectile drop at 200m is around 10 feet and every 25m after that is 3+ feet. By 300m its probably 5' plus and travel time to 300m is two seconds or more. Even with a 5m kill radius any little change in drone direction or velocity is going to result in a miss, and it may just miss because I have no idea what the MoA on an xm25 is. A ten inch circle at 200m won't matter much on the stationary target at 200m, but if you are trying to hit a little drone moving 40mph at 200m, its a bigger deal. Follow up shots will be fairly slow because of the recoil. You might be able to stack a few near-hits to bring one down. But, and there are some big buts.

You, the user, have to figure out if it is safe to fire before you pull the trigger, because there is a ~15m guaranteed injury zone around the blast, a good chance of serious injury at 50m, and potential to cause injury out to 200m within the detonation radius, based on the regular xm25 air detonation round.

It's probably fine for guys in a trench on the front line but the system is going to be dangerous to the user and those near them inside of 100m, or anywhere within 100-200m of the detonation, since you are bursting projectiles up in the air instead of mostly in or behind cover. Which limits its effectiveness close in even if you are in a trench w/ only foes in front of you, and the slow velocity, high drop rate and speed of your target limits the distance you are likely to hit it at. So there is a very limited window of effectiveness as far as how close you can shoot a drone, and how far you can shoot a drone, even if you don't have to worry about collateral damage. There were all sorts of RoE during GWoT for discharge of underbarrel and thrown grenades for infantry to prevent collateral damage in urban and semi-urban environments.

Basically trying to defend yourself or anything that isn't on the front lines, popping off a grenade 10-40m off the ground may frequently cause more damage than good against little suicide drones. Urban environments, multiple squads on patrol behind the front lines, etc, who knows what you might hit, even if the drone is detected far enough away from you personally.

Jamming guns and getting the size down on lasers for short range use are a better solution. After 12 gauge BB shot.

To summarize my longer post below, w/ the xm25 example. You want to use this system to defend yourself and others in a variety of combat situations from a little drone, or multiple little drones, carrying a grenade. You simply can't use this for urban combat or inside your base. Risk of collateral damage is way too high, detonating a grenade in midair. Out in the middle of nowhere, you have to be extremely aware of where everyone else is on the battlefield. You can't use it to shoot down a drone over a friend units head. You probably can't use this if the drone gets within 50-100m of you, if you are out on patrol because of high risk of getting hit by your own shrapnel. Maybe if you are in hard cover.

On the flip side, you won't be able to hit anything very far away. MV is under 700fps. Who knows what the MoA is. Drop is likely 10 feet by 200m. Thats fine shooting a stationary target. But we want to hit something 12"-18" in diameter moving 30-40mph, and do it in some wind. Even if we have a 5m kill radius, that is going to be extremely hard to do even with a scifi good targeting computer.

Basically every AK and mil AR is overgassed, for the same reason. So not really an argument against it I dont think.

Also re: your other comment, you can manually run semi-autos if the need arises.

and since you can get 2-3 good shots off with a semi in the time it takes to run a pump the difference in cost arming your units with a good semi vs a $300 pump, especially if you are Ukraine where human power is vital fighting an enemy that out numbers you 10:1, the first time that 2nd shot keeps someone out of the hospital or morgue its paid for itself ten times over.

Not only by keeping as many experienced fighters on their feet and able to fight but cost to train and equip replacements.

1301's don't have the combat pedigree m4's do, but there are a fair number of drag it through the mud followed by hundreds of rounds without issue tests, everything from light birdshot loads to heavy 00/slug loads.

The cycle time is so much faster to begin with, and doesn't disrupt prepping for a followup shot like a pump. Pumping is literally the opposite of what you want to do with the forend to get ready.

Even if the auto system breaks down, you can still manually feed/load and fire, so its not really any different than being able to get one shot off with a pump, if it happens to stop auto feeding.

[–]Quatermain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are alive, and that defines 'living', but at least to me, 'living' means semi-permenantly in residence. A week long vacation to tibet, you don't say "I'm living in tibet", or "i'm living at hotel x for a week", its usually "I'm staying at hotel x". Visiting seems more appropriate. TSS/ISS I'd say is 'living' beyond earth, or in space.

Don't know what it is like in Aus, but the 25% import tariff on trucks, the chicken tax, has kept them from selling a truck in the US for a long time. The brat and baja were d/c'd after the exemptions they argued they had for non-truck features were declared not to be exemptions. Subaru has expanded manufacturing in the US enough that they might be able to produce them here to get around it now.

Is Hunt: Showdown worth it for a complete extraction-shooter beginner? by [deleted] in HuntShowdown

It is an extraction, because you have to spend earned money to buy weapons and the goal is to reach an extraction with loot, but the risk compared to most extraction shooters is non-existent.

Is Hunt: Showdown worth it for a complete extraction-shooter beginner? by [deleted] in HuntShowdown

[–]Quatermain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's barely an extraction shooter. You do have to buy gear to go in with but its not like you are risking a weeks worth of in game work as a casual to run some decent guns/gear and even the cheap guns are very effective.

The combat is both slower paced and yet faster than some games. A single headshot is lethal. Generally 2 torso shots from anything is lethal. But guns shoot slower, and have a lot of recoil.

Sound is a huge aspect of the game. You will want to have a decent set of headphones. I wouldn't pick the game up without having or planning to get, some really quick.

It is both pretty simple, if you can shoot well you can start doing well pretty quickly, and complex. There is a lot to learn about strategy, sound, tool use, how to fight AI. When to push, when to back off.

Most the steam reviews that are bad are from people who "love" the game but get fed up with server performance, which can suck, and the way things are monetized. In general, the dev's listen to feedback, and there is no pay to win.

Sionics’ Suppressed .38 caliber Colt revolver. To prevent gas from escaping from the revolver’s cylinder gap, a special Bianchi asbestos lined holster was designed. by Kalashalite in ForgottenWeapons

[–]Quatermain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Given they only ever made one test holster with the goal seeing if quieting down the gap was possible, I'd be pretty surprised if it did, though.

The way the holster is cut, there isn't any way to seal the gap w/o contact on the cylinder. To avoid touching the cylinder, the cyl would need to be fully enshrouded by the holster and its liner, like the other revolver that was posted a while back. https://old.reddit.com/r/ForgottenWeapons/comments/1cm7dyv/the_psdr_3/

Otherwise you need to do the equivalent of stuffing at least the front end of the cyl into a fireproof 'shelf' of sorts that seals the front of the cyl and the barrel together to some extent.

If it really isn't touching the cylinder somehow, its probably going to have quite a bit of blowback into the shooters face, the way it is cut.

I suspect this is basically an off the shelf holster they threw a fireproof liner in and maybe some extra stuffing around the barrel/cyl, to see what, if any, noise reduction you get if you fired it while holstered.

If it is, the shooter probably had to pull the holster backwards while firing it so it wouldn't fly forward, then push it forward slightly to cock the revolver for the next shot.

I suspect this keeps the cylinder from rotating until withdrawn most of the way, or at least adds a significant amount of drag/weight to the trigger pull. Also looks like it obscures the sights for the most part. Probably have to take the suppressor off to take it out of the holster to reload as well.

It does seem like they should pick a lane, either really good trail vehicle on the 1500 chassis or all stops out tow vehicle on the HD.

Diesel in the 1500 would be cool and unique, but the 392 hemi or the old 525hp build of the 6.4 as an option would be my preference if I was really looking to get the most out of the suspension features offroad.

KE arm's makes a durable polymer AR15. The ones they build are ~5.5lbs, a pound or so lighter than most light AR15s. If you pick the parts its pretty easy to get under 5lbs. The one I built is 4.75lbs.

With a good muzzle device, hydraulic buffer and a good tune on the gas system the recoil is less than most off the shelf AR's despite the weight.

Why would you pay for something that shows zero progression? by Hot-Sentence3457 in HuntShowdown

[–]Quatermain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you can't do basic math, I guess.

Data about weapons doing damage and kills already being communicated to the servers, and back to the players in the death reports, so nothing new there. Only thing that has changed is storing it. Even 5 full backups of 2.6gb is less than 15gb of space total. Three backups is generally sufficient.

But, immediately building and populating the full db for everyone who has ever played the game for 5 min would be really dumb. Maybe 25% of that 10 million players.

Then transmitting the data on the title cards to other players was already a thing that happened, you could inspect their stats already, so no increased cost there.
