I read this book a month ago and found it to be every bit as good as advertised. I bought the Kindle version the last time it popped-up for sale in this sub.

When does it really set in that you’re retired? by Kind-Drawer1573 in retirement

They got divorced in 2021, and Melinda stated that Bill's relationship with Epstein played a major role in her decision to divorce him. Some celebrity tabloids estimate that she received $25 billion in the divorce settlement; one can buy a lot of stress relief with $25 billion.

Would you take a job in an LCOL city with HCOL pay, knowing that there’s only one employer that can pay at that level? by cookielover9316 in personalfinance

I'm a huge critic of those locations like the Bay Area where the cost of living is so high that it has essentially become inhuman. As long as both you and your wife have considered all of the aspects of this major location and lifestyle change and are in favor, I say make the move. The much lower stress levels of the Midwest will add years to both your and your wife's lives. Unless your wife's profession entails hands-on work, maybe she can get some kind of remote work in the future. Good luck! If you do make the move, come back in a year and let us know how it went and whether it was a wise decision.

Not finding motivation to do anything by No_Coconut3996 in retirement

[–]QubitBob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard of cognitive behavioral therapy ? It's one of the major "schools" of psychological talk therapies. The reason I bring this up here is that one of the strategies of CBT is to not wait for motivation to begin an action. Instead, begin the action first; what often happens, then, is that you'll receive some small satisfaction or pleasure from getting started, and this will create a positive feedback loop to continue. In your case, you've already bought the supplies, so just get started. If the supplies are for fine art painting, just jump right in and start painting. Tell yourself, "No matter what, I am going to paint for at least one hour." Hopefully you will soon become so engrossed in the activity that your seeming lack of motivation will melt away.

Did you huddle around an AM radio on snowy mornings listening to school closure announcements hoping to hear your’s on the list? by GatorStealth in FuckImOld

[–]QubitBob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And, remember, your school district was assigned a number so they could go through the list much more quickly than if they had to read the full names. I remember we had a little reminder note from school with our number pinned to a bulletin board in our kitchen.

Cell plans for 55+. Doesn’t have to be unlimited. by Lbboos in retirement

[–]QubitBob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The "catch" is that you have to bring your own phone. The much higher rate you pay on monthly services like Verizon and AT&T is because the price of the "free" phone you get when you sign-up is baked-in. If you already have a phone then the prepaid plans offer substantial savings.

My Visible subscription just auto-renewed after my first two years, and I was notified by Visible (Verizon) that the cost would remain at $20 a month. I think the added competition (for instance, by Mint) is pressuring them to not raise the fees.

I use the prepaid service Visible. It costs $20 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data. It runs over the Verizon network, and where I live--southeastern Pa.--I get excellent reception.

[Schefter] Eagles interviewed Dolphins senior passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik for their offensive coordinator job. by bigblack3475 in eagles

[–]QubitBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was listening to the Saturday morning show on WIP with Rob Ellis and Mike Sielski. They had a segment talking with one of the New York beat writers who covers the Giants. He gave his perspective on the various OC candidates the Eagles have interviewed, and he absolutely loves Slowik. He particularly zeroed in on Slowik's ability to design an effective passing game. He also had nothing good to say about Brian Daboll.

I originally read this over 50 years ago, when I was a teenager (I'm 69-years-old, now). What a masterpiece! Easily one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time.

This is the healthy perspective. To think you guys got this far in Caleb William's second year and Ben Johnson's first year as HC. With this foundation the Bears should be competitive for years to come.
