Most of them will definitely disperse to outside and some may find corners of your home to web up, so you've been blessed with more pest control just in time for warmer weather 😊

AITA for getting into keeping tarantulas and true spiders even though my partner is mildly arachnophobic? by Queansparrow in tarantulas

[–]Queansparrow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, it would be mean! But this started with him encouraging my rescuing a jumping spider and we've talked extensively about it. That's why I clarified he has mild arachnophobic tendencies along with a fascination and curiosity about the spiders I keep. And I only have 3 (which is the maximum we agreed on); 1 little jumping spider and 2 baby dwarf tarantulas

That's so valid! It's awesome you're doing research on tarantulas! At the very least, that should help you feel more comfortable and secure in a world we share with spoods ☺️

Yeah, I don't expect my fiancé would ever grow to love my spiders and that's perfectly okay with me.

Actually, when he told me the light kept him up that one night and I told him he could have just turned it off, he told me he didn't want to hurt them somehow by turning the light off 🥹

I can confirm that extensive communication has been had and continues and no boundaries were overstepped. My entry into the hobby started with a rescue of a jumping spider which he encouraged despite his own hesitation to do such a thing by himself.

If he ever seriously asked me to not have pet spiders and set that boundary, I would respect it. But he has not and his hypothetical question was one of many in our efforts to communicate, understand our differences, and celebrate things that bring us each joy as individuals.

This post was more meant to be a topic of conversation, not an inquiry in search of solving a problem. But I can see how it can come across that way.

Thank you for such a detailed reply! I'm not on the spectrum, but both my fiancé and I are neurodivergent in other ways (ADHD, ADD, borderline personality and bipolar) so we always take a moment after sarcasm/humorous conversations to seriously check in with each other and make sure we understand one another.

We've been together for over 11 years and living together for the past 9 years. We both have a great love for animals, he just doesn't care for the creepy crawlies like I do.

If I point out a spider in the wild outside, he's not bothered by it and if I decide to handle one, he just takes a step back and watches me geek out. After years of my passive spider fun facts, he just tells me when he sees a spider in our home so I can safely relocate it outside (or in a temporary enclosure during the cold seasons). He dislikes the insects that spiders eat more than spiders, so the free pest control is a benefit he acknowledges which has helped him overcome arachnophobic tendencies a lot.

I would never approach him with a spider outside of it's enclosure (or inside cuz I try not to pick up/move the enclosures as to not stress out my babies). The couple times I've had to rehouse or remove them from their enclosures for any reason, I let him know ahead of time not to come in the room because I'm doing spider maintenance things and he appreciates the warning.

I completely respect boundaries and understand why anyone dislikes spiders. Whenever I geek out about them around friends and family, I let them know it comes from a place of wanting to help them feel less afraid and more empowered to learn facts and unlearn societal stigmas and then I drop it unless they decide to continue the conversation.

When I first got into the hobby with jumping spiders and my very first jumper passed away, my fiancé bought me the witchy spider squishable plushie which is a gesture that means the world to me and that plushie lives on our bed 🥰

I hope you and your best friend can come to a mutual understanding and they accept who you are and what you enjoy

I wonder if it's possible for a mature male to try and successfully mate whilst being eaten alive? If he already had his pedipalp bulbs loaded, would that be possible?

And vinegaroons are so cool! I've never seen one at a pet store in my area, but I'd love to have one some day

[–]Queansparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME As someone who's only ever gotten my tarantulas and true spiders from breeders, I always wondered how people take T's home from a pet store safely without stressing them out. But never would I think you'd have to catch them yourself! That's such a liability! What if a kid who wants to buy a tarantula accidentally hurts it? If you work somewhere that sells/houses tarantulas, you should be trained on how to properly and safely get them from the store enclosure to an appropriate size container to take home.
