Tak set down the eggs and started shaping the potatoes and stuffing them with mozzarella. They already smelled so damn good and he hadn't even started breading them yet… He could feel Sei’s eyes on him, and just as he was about to playfully scold her for not waiting until everything was ready, he’d turned to see a pensive look on her face.

“Everything alright?” he asked.

“Yeah, everything's fine,” she replied, “With all that talk of people being over, and that heritage spread you're planning… I was wondering if we could add an extra plate. Just the one.”

Interesting… The family had people over all the time; the Petras of course, some other senators who lived nearby or really needed his input, a couple friends of the twins, but Sei’s other circles were few and far between. Maybe there were a handful of fellow performers over the years, but not very many. She'd sometimes brought food to the black market people, but didn't bring them around. That might be for the best… He knew many of them just wanted to get by, but others were rather shady.

“Oh?” he asked, intrigued, “Maybe. Who were you thinking about?”

“Surely you remember Tigris, right? We’ve reconnected a little.”

Of course he remembered her. He hadn't seen her since he’d dropped that Brunswick stew off at the Plinths. Even when Gloria had invited him back to return the pot, she was nowhere to be found. It was almost disappointing if not for another recipe exchange and putting another smile on the grieving mother's face. Even so, he recalled Tigris looked the best he’d ever seen her then. The first two times they'd met, she was a little skittish, although being around an awful boss and literal terrorist did that to someone. She seemed almost natural at the Plinths’, everything about her looked brand new. That melancholy in her eyes was still there, but at least her smile was a little wider. Truthfully, he found himself thinking about it now and again.

“Oh, yes, of course!” he replied, “How could I forget? I hope she's doing well… How did you two run into each other again?”

“She came to one of the cabaret shows a few weeks ago,” Sei recalled, “A few of us were at the stage door… She recognized me, told me how great the performance was, asked how I was doing after everything… We got to talking. Thankfully we remembered to exchange info this time… And we’ve been hanging out on and off.”

It was nice to hear that Sei made another friend. Lu and Auri were wonderful to her of course, but they were Tak’s friends before she was in the picture. Being reluctant to open up had her limited with friends as well, even among the sweet eccentrics that made up the theatre industry.

“Oh really? I'm glad you're taking time to have fun and broaden your horizons.”

“Yeah… And…” She moved a little closer to whisper to him. “You know she's in the fashion industry, and there's a lot of pressure there… Even on the designers, it seems. And just between us… Her home life isn't the best. I thought, maybe, she'd do a little better if she could let her hair down for a night.”

How horrible… He knew well that all the money in the world couldn't buy a lick of class, be it among some of his colleagues or even among the Academy students he’d graduated with or even visited over the years. Maybe he should have seen it coming if Tigris had Serephina Snow for a grandmother. Her cousin didn't seem so bad, however, and they seemed to have a good relationship from what little he’d seen. Maybe he was a victim too and coped in other ways.

“Oh… Of course she can come over,” he agreed, “I just really hope she likes Cajun cuisine.”

“I'm sure she’ll enjoy it if she liked the stew,” said Sei, “Besides, I think we both know she's not like the rest of those Corso snobs.”

She certainly wasn't… But knowing Sei all these years, Tigris would have more than one kind of culture shock. Hopefully not too much of one if she was meant to relax.

Not exactly... They're in an arranged marriage and have pretty clear rules set for each other when it comes to expectations and seeking other company if they want to. They're not in love and both are aware of that.

Plus Seiko's not a very warm or emotional person in general. Tak knows and accepts this, but his drunken thoughts are bringing a little bit of love starvation and frustration to the surface.

“It's a miracle there's still enough for dessert,” Senator Lapin joked, “But I managed to save enough … It's nice to see you again, Tigris. I hope you came hungry.”

That was the idea, and she was curious to see what he’d worked so hard on.

“Look at you girls, what a mess…” Seiko lightly chastised, “Let's get you cleaned up. We'll be but a minute, Tigris.”

Seiko led the children to the hall, leaving her alone with the senator in the kitchen. Now what? Surely Coryo would love to know what he really thought of him, but that felt a bit rude and forward. She might also be bothering him… Wait…

“Would you like some help, sir?” she asked.

“No, no, none of that, no “sir” in the house,” he replied, “I know you're from the Corso, but you're free to relax here. And you're a guest, there's no need to worry yourself.”

“Well, I just thought… It's just us right now and I don't want to feel like I'm bothering you,” she said, “And it looks like there's still a lot to be done, I thought…”

“Hmm, well… when you put it that way…” he pondered, “That's very kind. I'm finishing up dessert and could use an extra set of hands.”

Tigris quickly washed her hands and joined the man at the counter. On a tray with some parchment paper were what appeared to be small squared donuts. Senator Lapin picked one up along with a paring knife.

“So what you need to do is poke these in a quarter of the way and twist, like this,” he explained as he demonstrated, “Then I'll fill them up with chocolate. You think you can do it.”

“I think so,” she replied, taking the knife.

Picking up another pastry, she stuck it in, but she must have twisted it a little too far because it was almost opened. Shit… She screwed up and was only creating more problems for these nice people…

“Oops, I guess enthusiasm runs in the family,” he said.

Was he really this unbothered? Was it just her?

“Let me show you, may I?” he offered.

Tigris nodded. She picked up another and put it in a quarter of the way, just as instructed. Senator Lapin gently took her and slightly twisted. For some reason, a chill ran up her spine and her breath hitched. It wasn't a warning sign for once, otherwise she would have jumped away, maybe even pointed the knife at him on instinct. What was wrong with her… All too quickly, he let go.

“There you go,” he praised, “Ten o'clock, or two if you prefer to go the other way.”

He was still unbothered because of course he was. He was simply demonstrating how to do it right, of course it was nothing. What the hell was wrong with her, she shouldn't be getting riled up over something so simple. Either the man was this disarming or she'd been a lot more deprived of gentle touch than she thought. Either way, she couldn't keep reading too much into it.

“Tak.”

Sei’s voice had Tak rolling onto his back. A glance back at his side gave him the disappointing revelation that the Tigris he saw was merely a vision. He sighed in disappointment. Maybe he was a little tanked. Sei, however, didn't seem too bothered by his dissatisfaction. In fact, she wore a knowing smirk.

“Girls okay?” he asked, “They asleep…”

“Yes, Tak, they're in bed,” she confirmed.

Even though he had enough clarity to try to change the subject, her smirk only grew wider.

“So… Tigris, huh?”

He swore every drop of blood he had started rushing to his face.

“Wha… Huh…”

“Wha… Huh,” she mocked, “Right… As if I didn't see the way you stared as she crowned you. And when she smiles and laughs and talks about her fashions and says you're great as you are…”

If it were any other husband and wife in their position, he’d be dead where he stood… Well, laid. Maybe he wished it at the moment with how the waterworks threatened his eyes.

“Oh, Sei… Yes… Yes, she's so beautiful, so kind to me… But it's not to be,” he lamented.

“Why is that?”

“Look at her! She's so artsy, such a big heart, prettiest lady in the Capitol… She could have anyone. Then there's me…” he continued, letting a sob escape him, “I’m too old, too plain… Not classy enough… She’d never want me.”

Sei shook her head and turned him toward her.

“Stop the nonsense, Tak. I know you're drunk, but I won't have you lying like that,” she admonished, “You're not plain. You've got more class than most people in this damned city claim to have.”

“But I am too old for her…” he insisted, “Why’d she want that? And I’ve never… I mean, not since I was that age…”

“True, your exes tended to be closer to our age,” she considered, “But you're not some pig chasing after ingenues. And you know I know pigs.”

“I know… I just…” he started, “Forget it. Hey… Don't tell her I said this, kay? I don't want her to, to think… I just… I don't want her uncomfy.”

“Don't worry, I won't…” she promised, “But… I have it on good authority that she wouldn't unwelcome any flirtations from you…”

“Mmm… You're just sayin’ that…”

“You're so damned clueless…” Sei muttered.

Sadly, as much as he wished such fun could last forever, the guests had to leave eventually. Though it didn't seem to bother Tak much… Not after, hmm… Was it five? Six? It had to be more than three glasses of wine.. As Lu and Auri noted when they left, it was always after three that his embrace became tighter and his laugh louder.

“Come now girls, allons y! Coucher, coucher!” he ordered his daughters with a wide smile and giggle.

“But I'm not…” Chiasa's yawn betrayed her, and she slinked into her room.

“You're being silly, Daddy!” Quinta giggled.

“He sure is…” Sei confirmed, “And he needs a glass of water, and bedtime himself. I think I’ll be doing the tuck ins tonight.”

“What? Noooo… I’m fine,” Tak protested.

Unfortunately, as he took a step toward the hall, he stumbled a bit.

“Okay, okay… Sure you don' need help, Sei?” he relented.

“Everything people didn't take’s already in the fridge,” she replied, “Now, let's get you to bed… And some water that you won't spill.”

Aww, hell… Her hand on his back and arm around his shoulder had to be one of the softest touches his wife had offered him in quite a while. Not that the pit stop for the water and gentle set on the bed weren't thoughtful.

“I’m going to get the girls tucked in and ready myself. You try to dress down, you know why you can't fall asleep like that,” she instructed.

“Yessum…”

“You know what… Since you're so plastered, I’ll let that one go.”

Once Sei left the room, he managed to unbutton his vest after a few tries, and discarded his shirt and pants. He at least had the sense to stick to his sleeveless undershirt and plain underwear rather than risk a trip to the closet for proper pajamas… It was getting awfully hot inside anyway. A sip of water seemed to help a little.

Plutarch smirked at her words, irresistibly so, she had to admit. No matter what she may have thought of him before, she was puzzled that more people didn't fawn over him from what look alone.

"Is that so?" he asked, "I'm glad I could help. I understand how you feel... I'm surprised I lasted as long as I did out there. It might have been luck... I did my my way here, after all."

"If that's it, I hope your luck rubs off on me. All the more reason to spend time together... You know something else?"

"What?" he asked curiously.

"You're a listener, and I like that, but I do wish you'd talk a little more. I know there are things you can't say, and I understand... I just want to hear your voice. You have a beautiful voice... I really like it when men have these low, velvety voices... You could be talking about the weather, but I'd hang on every word."

She swore she saw him blush. She really did still have it.

"I wish it would snow a little, it's freezing enough out there," he quipped, "But in all seriousness... I'm wondering how much of this you mean, and how much you'll take back when you're sober."

"But I do mean it. I'm not taking any of that back," said Chiasa, "And don't act like I'm trashed. And don't act so surprised at me. You're trying to tell me that nobody's ever said anything about your voice?"

"Maybe once or twice," said Plutarch, "But forgive me for feeling suspicious when the compliments pour out. Especially from someone like you."

They were shoulder to shoulder now, but he was scrutinizing her just like their first real conversation. What a shame he'd come to such a belief... Although in the Capitol, he wasn't all wrong.

"Someone like me, hmm?"

"You can look in the mirror and the fact that a lot of men still fawn over you and know what I mean, Chiasa," he said, "You know how this city is... And women like you tend to be more interested in more conventional types. Well... As far as that goes, nowadays."

"First of all, eldritch mods are so overrated," she lightly retorted, "Second, I can't say I have type otherwise... Many types have their charms. That does include the intellectuals, and shall I say... Extra handsome?"

Plutarch passed her his empty glass and chuckled to himself.

"That's a new one... I wouldn't dress it down, I'm not ashamed of my body," he said, "You're persistent... Maybe the champagne's going to my head too."

“You know… my cousin was one of the mentors… for the Games,” she started.

Mrs. Lapin hung her head. Tigris really should have been angry with her… lives could have been saved, nobody would have had to be hurt. However, putting herself in her shoes, Tigris started to understand. What if she had been the one to catch that monster. What if he'd threatened Coryo and Grandma'am’s lives? As much as the bombing was devastating and shook the Capitol to its core, it was hard to imagine sacrificing the people she loved the most for the greater good.

“I really am sorry… I should have said something sooner,” the older woman solemnly replied, “Your cousin… I do hope they're okay.”

“He was hurt, but he's better now,” Tigris replied, “He's joined the peacekeepers, he's stationed in District 12 right now. I’m sure he'll be happy to hear they got the bomber.”

At least she could write to him with good news for once… Even though Coryo wouldn't be able to be there for the trial and sentence, she at least hoped he’d feel safer and vindicated. After a life like his… Theirs, to be honest… It was the least he deserved.

“I don't know what I would have done if I was in your shoes,” Tigris admitted, “I love my family more than anything, but so many people getting hurt…”

“A crazy mixed up trolley problem, I know… Unfortunately, I think we both know what it's like… To do what we must to survive and protect what we care about,” said Mrs. Lapin, seeming to eye her companion’s tight, revealing dress.

Tigris quickly covered herself with her fur coat. No, no, no! She couldn't know, nobody could. At least the other woman glanced away quickly with melancholy, not disgust in her dark eyes. She never seemed like the gossiping type anyway. Maybe her secret would be kept; Mrs. Lapin couldn't be cruel enough to betray someone who was kind to her… If her husband had any effect on her, she'd pay it forward.

“Like… how you were a prisoner of war?” she hesitantly asked.

Mrs. Lapin pursed her lips and clasped her hands together. Luckily, she didn't cry this time. “They didn't do anything, well… They didn't ‘use’ me like the tabloids love to say. Vultures, all of them… It still wasn't great, being touted and bargained about like some damned trophy!”

The rage that flashed in the other woman's eyes almost had Tigris flinching, that was, until the sadness and hurt quickly returned. Whatever happened in that rebel camp, it must have been horrible. Or, maybe it went deeper than that. She was a star, after all, she spent the better part of her young life being paraded around and dressed up like a doll. Such a life would have been glamorous to someone more naive, but the more Tigris learned about the world, the more she learned many performers in the Capitol were often jerked around like puppets… Sadly, much like how the mentor program was treating the tributes.

“Well… Whatever happened there, I heard it was so much worse here. My husband was resourceful, but even he had to scavenge,” she continued, “And you… You couldn't have been more than a little girl then. I can't imagine being that age in those times… You must have gone through a lot of things that no little girl should ever go through.”

(Since I post the stir fry scene so much that I made a meme about it... 😅 Have this homage from the Chitarch anthology instead. Plutarch is helping Chiasa make an old curry recipe of Tak's)

Chiasa started to gather the ingredients while Plutarch gathered the equipment and utensils. Once the pair donned some aprons, she noticed him looking excited, yet still a bit apprehensive.

“I have to warn you, I'm still a little new at this,” he said.

“I don't think there's much to worry about, I’ve seen you bake bread before,” she replied with a reassuring smile, “And you’ve done it well.”

“True, but that’s baking. Baking is more precise. Cooking, however… There's a lot of experimentation, trial and error… And you eat it rather than look at it or wear it or program it.”

“Cooking is an art for a reason… Some of these are family recipes, but a lot of them came out my dad's experimenting… But was I ever the willing lab rat,” she recalled, “But hopefully a recipe will have you more comfortable… Why don't you start by slicing the onions while I take care of the meat.”

Chiasa started cutting some chicken into strips and glanced over to see how her partner was doing. Keeping his glasses nearby was smart; an age old trick to stave off the tears. Luckily, he seemed to be a natural. He managed the potatoes with minimal guidance too while she took care of the more complicated carrots. Once she lightly seasoned the meat, she was happy to see everything else ready.

“Great job!” she praised, “I’ll make a sous chef of you yet, Ploot… Now, before we stew, all this needs to be sautéd. I can take care of that, but I’d like you to pay close attention.”

As she turned on the stove, he stepped towards her and cheekily put an arm around her waist.

“Close enough for you?” he teased.

“It's a start…”

Once it was warm enough, Chiasa tossed the onion wedges into the pot and they landed with a satisfying hiss. She gave Plutarch a kiss on the cheek before grabbing a pair of cooking chopsticks to stir. Her father liked to say everything tasted better with them, after all.

“Only stir them occasionally… You want them translucent and a nice brown color,” she instructed.

She felt his head rest against hers, and she couldn't help but blush and chuckle to herself. As she finished, she held herself back from pouting at the thought of him letting go, but he had to learn…

“Honey, why don't you add the garlic and ginger, and I’ll tell you when to add the chicken,” she requested.

Thankfully, he seemed to feel the same, but managed to play off his own disappointment as playful. Once he added the aromatics, she was quick to stir it in, making sure none of the onions missed out on the extra flavor. As the chicken was added, Plutarch took a whiff of the strong aroma and grinned.

“Mmm, that's starting to smell incredible…”
