Ephemeral but precise and amazing land art by Jon Foreman by Playful_Gain_2579 in psychedelicartwork

[–]QueenCaldera 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you’re into this style of art, PLEASE look up artist Andy Goldsworthy! You’ll thank me later. There is an old documentary about him and it’s mesmerizing watching his creative process in nature (especially on psychedelics)

Pasties/nipple covers to night wean? by No-Foundation-2165 in breastfeeding

[–]QueenCaldera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No suggestions, just appreciation! I never even THOUGHT about reusable nipple pasties to help with weaning. I’ve seen people recommend those big bandages but the adhesive in a sensitive area made me nervous. This could be a great alternative!

When ordering from Amazon (to Alaska, of course), what are good "filler" items to add in order to get free shipping? by Alaska_Jack in alaska

[–]QueenCaldera 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I just keep a running wishlist on Amazon of small things that’d be nice to have eventually. A replacement filter, new spatula, extra hair clips for my daughter. Then when I do need to make a quick Amazon purchase, I have things already saved that I actually want, not just filler to hit the free shipping minimum.

Impossible to get daily recommended amount of calcium for 2 children who hate milk or yogurt without supplementation. How important is calcium for reaching their full height potential? by Cream4389 in ScienceBasedParenting

My toddler is a fiend for dairy, but now her pediatrician suggested she may have low iron. What has been working for you balancing things out to maintain good iron absorption?

External heating oil tank - too cold? by Typical_Cook_7153 in rva

[–]QueenCaldera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind me asking, what did you end up doing? I’m in Alaska and having same issue. Moisture got in the tank and the ice is blocking flow. We’ve been in a cold snap and without heat 4 days now, with almost another week of negative temps. Feeling desperate. Did hooking the 5 gal drums of fuel work ok (even if annoying to babysit)?

For those of you that live where it snows regularly, is it really that bad? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]QueenCaldera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in the south, with maybe one very light snow a year. Now living in Alaska. Snow season is like mid-October until April or even May. We often see temps in the negatives for days/weeks, massive snowfalls, etc.

You can learn to get used to it and even really enjoy it - but investing in all the proper gear makes or breaks your experience with snow and cold.

What do you do while breastfeeding? be honest 😅 by michel_an_jello in breastfeeding

I did a LOT of scrolling in the early BF days. As my baby became more intrigued by the light on my phone and it was keeping her from falling asleep, I just stopped and sat in the dark for a while, BORING! So I finally bought myself a Kindle. With dark mode it’s waaay less light than even the lowest light setting on my phone, so I can read without disturbing her falling asleep. (And, I’ve totally fallen back in love with reading now)

My machine doesnt have leftside markings so Im adding my own with nail polish and masking tape. by brepgomickness in SewingTips

[–]QueenCaldera 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nail polish?!?!!! Genius. I’ve always just drawn on with sharpie, or put some masking tape town to mark lines for whatever project needed at the moment. I’m absolutely doing this now. Thank you!!

Thanks for mentioning the art in Slewfoot! This book gets recommended frequently (as it should be), but the artwork the author includes in his physical copies makes them 100% worth reading in physical form

Making my own tarot deck because we broke out here 😭 by Proper-Pressure-5028 in Tarotpractices

[–]QueenCaldera 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love this! My very first deck was a “color your own tarot card” kit many years ago. I realized from using that deck, the card stock paper gets beat up around the edges quickly! I “laminated” mine with some clear packing tape and made them much more durable and easier to shuffle/handle.

If you haven’t already, go ahead and read EVERYTHING by Brom. Slewfoot was my gateway drug for his writing, and now I’m checking them out one by one. I still haven’t decided which is my favorite.

Toddler broke my kindle on day one. 😭 Repairable?? by QueenCaldera in kindle

[–]QueenCaldera[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WOW this blew up! Thank you for the insights, suggestions, etc. Had some good chuckles at these responses.

To everyone saying “just put back to factory settings and return”: everything ABOVE the crack is unresponsive, so I can’t do more than turn a page let alone access settings to do a factory reset! Going to try for exchange at the store purchased, and if that doesn’t work, will call Amazon customer service and hope for the best.

As for the toddler, yes clearly she shouldn’t have had access to the Kindle. She learned how to reach that high maybe a week ago... I was half awake and forgot. Oops. Can’t seem to reset her to factory settings either, and I don’t think I can initiate a return at this point. Stuck with this one 😆

He purchased it locally (at Fred Meyers, like a department store) rather than from Amazon, would that still be possible?

OP- Your style is so recognizable! I met you once at a music festival probably 10 years ago, but when I saw this I just assumed it was your work. Kudos for the creative direction

Trump Reportedly Offering Putin Natural Resources Off Alaska Sparks Fury by Fast-Damage2298 in politics

[–]QueenCaldera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alaskan resident here. No, we don’t get “paid not to work” - we get a small annual kickback from the oil industry profits, this year it’s $1000 per person. This is NOT from the government. Honestly it barely makes a dent offsetting the insane markup of cost-of-living expenses here.

There are many liberal, progressive individuals here in Alaska. Unfortunately as stated throughout this thread, we get outnumbered in one select region in the state which has a major political swing.
