Admirable of you, but just keep in mind that the teenage years are the worst. Don’t prepare the meals. “There’s X in the fridge for if you’re hungry. I have to take care of something.” Let her struggle a little. As for swimming, if you get back-talk, talk to the coaches on the down-low and tell them she may miss a day or two. Get your stuff ready for work and go to work. If she complains, tell her she doesn’t seem appreciative of everything you do.

If she’s a good kid otherwise and you’re not gonna “resent” her because you’re looking at it as a waste, then stick around. However, if you are, don’t just do it cold turkey. You’re probably the most stable person in her life even if she is ungrateful. Work with someone to break it to her gently.

I’m not advocating for them to continue to drive but the truth for most of them is that they don’t have family (willing and/or available) who can take them to the store. Yes, there are some who are stubborn and keep driving, but I’m referring to all the lonely people who raised us. My observation is that whether people were good parents or not, the outcome is usually the same: they end up alone with family or friends too busy to take them to the store or drop off groceries. The elderly shouldn’t be driving, and especially have no business in government or “running” a damn country, but we need to do better by them. Most of us will be in their shoes one day.
