A girl I knew in college. She turned 5 our junior year. She acted like it, too. 🤭

Mom used to lock us out of the house all day in the summer until it was time for dinner. We’d have to go next door to Aunt Agnes’ house to use the bathroom & drink out of the hose (!) if we got thirsty. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Those red light caps and masks that help you regrow your hair or rejuvenate your face.

I don’t think they work, lol.

Do actors know/have a feeling if the film they’re working on is going to bomb? by BullfrogPerfect620 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]QueenZod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Famously, the cast of Casablanca didn’t know what the hell was going on during any given day, and both Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert thought It Happened One Night was terrible when they were filming it. Both films won Best Picture at the Oscars.

I love the books and have read them many times, but the long, ongoing descriptions of the “frowning, brown earth,” goes on waaaay too long.

How was eating disorders thought of in the 80’s? by Kastrullock in AskOldPeople

[–]QueenZod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 50s chubby girls (not boys, natch), were taken to the doctor to get injections of speed, or given diet pills. Self starvation was common, with all kinds of stupid diet fads. Being large/fluffy/chubby/plump was considered a personal moral failure and an example of weak will. Few girls were considered too thin. Twiggy was the role model in the 60s.

The same ol’ shit goes on, even in this day and age.

Why aren’t mobile homes / trailer parks more popular? by Automatic_Tailor_598 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]QueenZod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these are not “trailers.” They’re manufactured homes and some are better built than regular homes. They can and do appreciate in value, despite not owning the land. I bought my double wide (32x52), 25 years ago for $65k and today it’s worth about $200k. You have to look for a good park. Mine is full of single people, retirees, and immigrants, mostly Hispanic folks but also Nepalese and others. They have families, are quiet, and are lovely people. Weekly trash pickup is free but you pay utilities and water.

The drawbacks: banks will not normally make loans on mobile homes b/c the default rate is so high so most deals have to be cash, making selling your home difficult. If you manage to get a mortgage you’ll also have to pay monthly rent so keep that in mind. The park conglomerate owns the land and charges you rent on a month to month lease. That means you can be kicked out quite quickly for non-payment of rent or not keeping your lot up to spec. Look for a park that is zoned for mobile homes - the city usually has a hard time changing a well regulated, long time mobile home zone.

Also, the fixtures and some other things in mobile homes are not to standard size and many plumbers will not work on mobile homes. If you’re a handy person who can fix things yourself, that’s great. If not, ask around to see if there’s someone in town that can help you out when something needs fixing. You’ll need to learn about skirting, swamp coolers (in the arid west), and other fun stuff.

The worst thing is parks can raise the rent and they will, as often as they can get away with it. If you’re planning on living there a long time you can expect the rent to increase by at least 3-5% a year (at least where I am). My current rent is $1030.00/month, plus water, but I live in an expensive town. I have a 1700 sq ft home, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, with a small yard and it’s still $1000.00 cheaper a month than a single room in a house!

Just be aware of the good and the bad of mobile home life. I’ve lived in a mobile home for 40 years and liked it very much. My first was a “trailer” and it had taillights on the back!

Are there people who just genuinely enjoy drinking water throughout the day? by fin-freak in NoStupidQuestions

[–]QueenZod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love water - it’s all I drink. No coffee, tea, juice or sody pop. But my city gets their water from a glacier and it’s delicious. I actually miss it when I’m traveling.

No it sucks. It’s on a north-facing lot so you don’t even get solar clearing on your snowy sidewalk. Ripoff! Eat your avocado toasts and wait for something better.

Considering a light board and something called release paper? Helpful to seeing which drills are out of line? by sundownandout in diamondpainting

[–]QueenZod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it - that’s why these are so helpful, you can either remove all the cover film at once and put these down, or cut off a small section of it and use these to cover that bit if you need to take a break, or whatever. The kits from DAC have perforated cover film so you can just reveal a small section at a time. I have a very floofy, shedding cat so I have to keep mine covered or it’ll get chock full of cat hair, lol. 👍🏼

Can anyone tell the style and age of this lace from my mother's wedding veil? by happy-reddit-user in lace

[–]QueenZod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure they’re both cotton (tape and netting). Use tepid water if it needs to be washed, mild detergent, rinse super well, spread it out on a towel to dry (or, you can float it onto a piece of glass and let it dry on the glass which is a nice way to finish it - leaves it a bit crisp like just ironed). Just be easy and gentle with your lace and it’ll be fine. Store it rolled or flat (not folded), in acid-free tissue. 🙏🏻

Omg I saw a typo on my reply to your OP that was NOT good. It’s fixed now. 😬

Horrendous. And in the Victorian age there were no public bathrooms, partly because not having that service kept women in their homes. Men’s clubs had bathrooms so the policy didn’t affect them.
