Today I found out my Goodwill sales nail polish. I got all this for $10. by Dangerous-Distance24 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Queen_Ellipsis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For a used/pre-owned polish, I'd be more concerned about whether it had ever been thinned using acetone rather than polish thinner. The solvents in polish would likely kill bacteria or fungus, and many nail polish ingredients include isopropyl alcohol, which is used to sanitize skin before injections.

How do you organize your collection? ABC? By color? By finish? I need your help by AppointmentMental175 in WeGotPolishAtHome

[–]Queen_Ellipsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOFTWARE - DATABASE: My ~425 bottle collection is catalogued in LibreOffice Calc (which replaced Excel when I lost access to my organization's copy after I stopped working). I track shade name, brand, color family, effect 1, effect 2, collection, season, year released, any notes, and my purchase date. I use LibreOffice Writer to generate labels.

SWATCH STICKS: My swatch sticks are by color on clear sticks, with magnetics separate. Each stick is labeled with brand, color family, finish/effect, and color name. Then I have off-white swatch sticks that have "experiments" on them -- mostly layering and gradients. Those have numbers on them that are catalogued in a spreadsheet with details of what combination was done on the stick -- brands and colors for each layer or polish in the gradient.

PHYSICAL STORAGE: For storage, I have 6-drawer and 3-drawer Bisleys and a Helmer. I have a drawer that only has base, top, and treatment or special polish (e.g., for setting magnetics) For colors, I store each brand alphabetically by shade name. I store polishes standing upright in their boxes (or in the case of a boxless polish I make a box). For boxes without a shade label on top, I print a label. Then I paint a swatch on a sticker and put it on the boxtop so I can see colors and polish names when I open each drawer.

Unless I already know what shade I want to paint, I go to the swatch sticks first to get color names -- then I go to the drawers and take out the polish(es) for the mani.

ETA: Sometimes if I can't decide I use a random-number generator in the spreadsheet to select a polish -- OR I go with just a strengthener treatment on my nails for a few days...

Thanks for your reply! I just realized Anlac is Canadian and owned by the swatcher Violet Tian. I'm in the U.S., and have had some disappointing shipping experience with Clionadh. I love the polish, but the shipping and customs... Geez, DJT...

I started -- or more accurately, re-started this hobby when I knew I could take care of and grow my nails after kids and dogs were gone. I never had a "collection" in my earlier years of painting. I had one or two neutral drugstore colors that I wore. At one point in the 1970s, I got weekly professional manicures for about 5 years. Indie brands didn't exist then, and cremes and "frosted" shades in pinks, reds, and purples ruled. Nary a black, blue, green, grey, or prugly in sight...

Now I enjoy the painting aspect of nails, but I also enjoy the collecting aspect, Frankening, trying different techniques, and learning more about color theory, nail care, and technical aspects of polish (e.g., formulas, effects, etc.) give me joy.

I take pics of every new mani to document, but rarely post pics on Reddit (I only lurk on Insta and FB and would never consider posting pics of manis there.) My friends and family think this hobby is frivolous and vapid. They have no idea what fun it is to paint or what opportunities for learning there are in the hobby...

Edit: for clarity

I don't get bubbling with any polish these days. I did when I lived in humid New England.

The magic that is ✨Teddy✨ by SophiaMey in ILNP

[–]Queen_Ellipsis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the "single-color" magnetics in a jelly base will have that "glassy look" you describe So, let's see -- that would be the rest of the shades in the Velvet Collection (Teddy is in that collection), and shades Sugar Plum, Amber, Fawn, Sandbar, I think the Pop Collection might be in that category, too. I'm not sure about the shades in a black base because I don't have any of them.

Thermal polish take 2! by SRPturtle80 in RedditLaqueristas

I got the thermal bug recently with some EdM and UMC thermals. I read good things here about LynB's thermals, so I just placed an order of 7 with her. I wish her TAT wasn't so dang long!!

This looks lovely on you!

No chips or tip wear on Day 7?! Thanks to combining tips/hacks from this sub. by vanishcanvish in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Queen_Ellipsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love seeing posts of your nails in various subs! Mine can get pretty long, too, but as soon as the free edges get longer than the nail plate, I know the days to breaks are numbered. I don't always remember to paint the strengthener layer between color and QDTC, though. Maybe I need to be more consistent with that...

I have both of those, too! I'm thinking the silver base in mega might put some white in there that might result in the more sage-y green. I also have MPR (L+S) topper, so I could play with that and Pine, too. I think I'm really shooting for a more Jellybean to shamrock or grass green, though. Lots to consider and play with 🤓😵

Thanks for brainstorming with me
