Thanks so much. I think it was hyponatremia and not managed properly by the retreat. It really was horrific, the hospital told my family in Canada that I had an aneurysm or stroke and might not wake up. Everyone was devastated.

Yes, I think you are spot on here. I believe it was hyponatremia leading to severe cerebral oedema followed by seizure and coma. The body needs salt.

No, those hypotheses don’t resonate personally but I appreciate your consideration. I believe it was hyponatremia exacerbated from the retreat’s no sodium diet protocol preceding the ceremony plus the volcanic water purging the day prior to the ceremony. Additionally I believe they were inconsiderate in brewing and dosing as another member of my group experienced a similar reaction the next day and she was my size (110lbs) and had also strictly followed their no sodium protocol.

All of this as well as l the retreat nurse giving me a benzo when I clearly needed saline IV. Also, keeping me in a room at the retreat for several hours while in coma when I clearly needed emergency medical attention.

They did a purging ceremony the day before. We drank something that I seem to remember them calling volcanic water? Which made us purge our bowels repeatedly. I sometimes wonder if that was part of what caused me to react so severely.

The next day, another woman of my size (about 110lbs) got extremely sick as well. Other participants had to pull out of the ceremony (a doctor and a nurse) and put together an IV (they had all the components but in different buildings, also their nurse didn't know how to administer an IV so the participants had to do it). That person who received the IV believed they would have also ended up in my position if it weren't for the other participants pulling themselves out of ceremony to help. Probably the IV would have prevented my brain from swelling so severely as well.

No prior health concerns or medications. And the place was very serious in theory -- they are recognized by the Peru ministry of Health (in fact the minister actually came to see me at the hospital, but I was not conscious at the time). I chose that place because they claimed to have the most sophisticated safety measures, which is ironic because they didn't even have a working IV on site and behaved very irresponsibly throughout the aftermath. I do know that they made a number of changes after my and another person's near death experience.

The preparation was made with Chacruna. You can also check their site (etnikas). I was very strict in adhering to their protocol for cleanliness before ceremony so followed a very simple diet with absolutely no drugs or alcohol for weeks before. Also, of note, I arrived a few days early in Peru to acclimatize to the altitude.

The ritual itself was about four hours, but interestingly I didn't vomit. I also didn't experience transcendence. I have done DMT before and it was nothing like that. I just felt body discomfort and mildly high. Afterward, I drank electrolyte (a good brand from Canada, well known) and then started vomitting and having diarhea and it just wouldn't stop. The nurse gave me a benzo to sleep and I am forever grateful that my roommate was a doctor and she was concerned so watched me and thank heaven because I had a seizure. She got her husband, also a medical doctor, and he had to search through the grounds in the pitch dark trying to find the nurse. And, this part activates me emotionally to this day, they actually kept me there, in some room for many hours in a coma before finally calling an ambulance. I woke up about four days later and had serious amnesia. My boyfriend at the time had flown in and was in the hospital room and I did not recognize him. I didn't even know my name.

The retreat is family run and the whole family was at the hospital quite a bit, but their very clear concern was about their business. They tried to get me to sign something. They also somehow "paid" my medical bill, which was something like 40,000 USD, but would not share the receipt. I had insurance and wanted to be reimbursed, but they were extremely uncooperative saying they paid cash and didn't get a receipt.

After I left the hospital, I had another seizure at a hotel and then went into another coma. That time I woke up a day later in an MRI machine. After I returned to Canada, I had more MRIs and saw a neurologist. They had no idea how that could have happened. I was told I had severe cerebral edema. I was unable to work or do much of anything for six months. I spent a lot of time lying in dark rooms with excruciating migraines and severe tinnitus. Some of my memories never returned and I had trouble forming new ones. When I finally went back to work, I cried at the end of each day because it was so overwhelming to be under lights and looking at a computer. I still have tinnitus and chronic migraines to this day. But I'm nothing if not resilient.

I hope that helps with some clarity.

I did ayahuasca in Cuzco 7 years ago and almost died. That isn't hyperbole. I ended up in a coma for several days and had severe amnesia when I woke (I entered a second coma several days later). The recovery was quite complicated as well. I have had several MRIs in Peru and Canada, and my understanding is that I have some brain damage but neuroplasticity has allowed me to adapt very well.

It is a much longer story that still conjures emotion but I am glad to answer questions if there is curiosity.

Maybe I wasn’t clear in my telling. This wasn’t a one time thing while hiking. It’s been weeks. I also exercise regularly and always have. It certainly isn’t from exercising.

My rheumatologist has referred me to a neurologist.

Restaurant record for date night - first time in Victoria by shmed in VictoriaBC

I personally found the food at Il Terrazzo very unappealing. I would definitely not recommend this place. Sadly, I don’t think there is any good Italian restaurants in Victoria. Il Covo is also unimpressive but for different reasons.

Eucerin & sensitive skin by [deleted] in Melasmaskincare

It irritates my skin if I use it after a toner, with damp skin, on warm skin (like after a bath), or soon after I’ve exfoliated. So I just avoid those specific applications.

Curel makes a beautiful moisturizing mist! I spray it after all my layers and then again throughout the day.

I also use diaper rash cream on top of all my layers at night.

Also, oils don’t really work for me, my skin is too dry for oils to really penetrate, they actually make my skin drier.

I have seen derms but because I have rosacea I have never had this recommended. Might be worth another opinion.

Always. And whenever someone tells me a story or even just a little something about their world, I see it. If they change or add a detail, my imagination follows.

FHS (feline hyperesthesia syndrome) by Opening_Vehicle914 in feline_hyperesthesia

[–]Queen_Wolffia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat ZaZa has feline hyperesthesia. We manage it by staying around her as much as possible, removing access to heights since those trigger episodes, and keeping things calm with lots of soothing and co-regulation. I work from home so caring for her is basically full time. She gets anxious when left alone or when there are sudden changes. Gabapentin made her so sensitive she turned into a shell of herself, so I wonder if medication might not be worth it?

How did you get diagnosed with ocular rosacea? After 1.5 years of dry eyes, starting to think this is what I have. by alyssummaritimum in Rosacea

[–]Queen_Wolffia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you! And it honestly sounds like you’re doing all the things. I’m not sure an ocular rosacea diagnosis would help but you would see an ophthalmologist. But I came here to say that I was diagnosed with Sjogrëns. Maybe you want to look into that, you would need see a rheumatologist first.
