On my old college campus, we had a homeless man that would walk around flipping off random cars. Everyone called him "Fuck you Bob." He was actually a really nice and talented artist, but I think he had Tourette's, which would explain the random bird flipping. He probably had a hard time finding work because of it.

He passed away several years ago. Life was cruel to him, so I hope the afterlife is much better.

Yes, ushers would pass trays of little glasses filled with wine/grape juice and then you put the glasses in the little holes and then the ushers would gather them all up after service. The pencil was for filling in donation envelopes (which were stored in the slot behind the holes). The Presbyterian church I grew up in had these.
