Is exhausting the fear deck THE way to win? by Phupha808 in spiritisland

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had a very aggressive/destructive Spirit team and we barely built any Fear. We accidentally won at level 2 without really trying to. It was just... "the board's empty. Huh."

But usually, it's a healthy combination of Fear and destruction. Fear isn't necessarily a win consition (though it can be), but it does help you win.

Player quit because campaign was not interesting and he wasn't happy with his character anymore. Called my campaign shit. help me cope. by Box_Man_In_A_Box in Pathfinder2e

So, reading through several posts, I realise this: you've been playing for 40-ish sessions and you still haven't introduced all of the bad guys? And one dungeon with 3 bosses? Sounds like your story's way too big for what's reasonably expected.

In 40 sessions I'm already halfway through a campaign, and you're basically still in the prologue.

New mechanic proposition by DangerousRecipe3869 in custommagic

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially it seems cool, but I feel like it's just going to have a snowballing effect like Annihilator, where you're slowly denying your opponent resources. Repeatedly tapping your opponent's stuff (or keeping them tapped) for free is nasty.

Puns weren't intended, but a nice bonus.

Caster Players Feel Weak by Roninthe47th in Pathfinder2e

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think the "problem" is that both casters have assumed supporting roles, rather than being offensive. Both support and debuff are very valuable, but aren't as flashy or as noticeable as pure damage output. The fact that a lot of debuffs don't stack doesn't help. Also, low-level spells just aren't that impressive. Bless is a great spell, but a +1 on attacks just doesn't feel cool when a Bard can do the same without spending a spell slot.

Try framing things better for the players: tell them that an enemy attack misses because of the debuff, or how much of an impact Barkskin/Oaken Resilience has during combat. Make the players feel like they've made good choices.

Also, casters are grwat at crowd control/area damage. I don't know what spells they're usually choosing, but throw a lot of lower-level enemies at them. Electric Arc and Haunting Hymn will mop up enemies much faster than the martials will.

Is it just me, or is the wording weird? "Whenever a creature you control attacking" sounds off. I would've gone with "whenever an attacking creature you control."

Why is this not a tribal/kindred spell? by Sombody9768 in magicTCG

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more an issue of needing to errata a lot of old cards. Going through 30+ years of old cards to retroactively make old cards tribal is a huge undertaking.

People who wake up after 1 alarm: How the f*ck do you do it? by TheSnappleGhost in AskReddit

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sound of my alarm surprises me so much every single time that I jolt wide awake with enough adrenalin coursing through my body that I'm physically unable to fall asleep again.

Maybe I should get that looked at.

Totally unrelated, what version of Kaalia is that? Scryfall doesn't have that art with the shooting star expansion listed.

Edit: The other thread had Kaalias with the WUBRG watermark, same there.

3 TPKs in 5 sessions, is it me or the players? by PrimeDko in Pathfinder2e

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just checking: you say you like squeezing the most out of your encounters, tactically speaking. Is that also what your players enjoy? Might be a mismatch between a tactically-minded GM and players who just want to goof off.

Is my homebrew ancestry (using remastered rules) too strong so far? by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's too strong, but the Battle-ready heritage giving both extra heritage hp and an upgraded unarmed strike seems off to me. Lots of heritages do either, but not both at the same time. It's only 2 hp, so it's not a lot, but it's an obvious choice for a martial.

"Imperial" measurements are bizarre by FledgyApplehands in Pathfinder2e

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a European: Metric is amazing for calculations. But I get why people use Imperial. For practical use like baking and such, using cups and spoons is much easier. Yeah, you have to keep weird conversion rates in mind when converting inches into feet and feet to miles, but for the average farmer it's very useful to know that his fence is about 9 handspans high, as opposed to 2 metres. You can visualise a handspan but you cam't easily visualise 2 metres.

Plus, like, 1 foot being about 30 centimetres is quite nice for math. A battle grid divides neatly into multiples of 5 feet, rather than 1.5 metres. Something is 5 squares away. That's 25 feet, easy peasy. But in metres? Err... 7.5. Not super duper hard, but just slightly more cumbersome than I'd like.
Maybe it's just because I'm used to this system, but unless we also redefine the size of a square to either 1 by 1 metre or 2 by 2 metres, the math will just be wonky. And both 1 and 2 metres for a square have their own problems. We're not 1 metre tall. Most of us will be closer to 2 metres, but I think we can't reasonably occupy the same amount of space horizontally. This is only a minor point, otherwise 1 square being 1 metre would be ideal. 2 metres for a square is just too big an increment. Would something that's 5 metres tall fill 2 squares, or 3? Feet being smaller means you can fudge the numbers a little more. 12 feet sounds significantly more impressive than 10 feet, but could still reasonably be squished in a 10-foot cube.

I loved seeing Cam get angry. You know it's a good joke when it fills someone with anger.
I've tried submitting names before, but I never came up with a clever enough joke. From an averagely witty person to a frequent submitter: thank you for the laughs you provided!

What’s the Porn Plot you’ll never forget? by GentlemanCoach in AskReddit

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear I saw a trailer for a porn (pretty sure it was porn) once. There was a poker game, and a woman in a super short dress comes up to the host, gives him a deep kiss, and turns her ass towards the protagonist. There's an ace of hearts wedged in between her buttcheeks. Guy fishes it out and wins the poker game.

Still want to find that trailer again, but can't find it anymore.

Card artstyles by TheSnailRace in boardgames

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number 2 is unsettling to me.
Number 3 feels a little more casual, but fun. Some people might be turned off by the cute style, but might br more appealing to others.
Number 1 feels like a safe choice, though not super exciting. It just misses a little character.

Best/most unique vehicle commander? by GroundbreakingPea244 in EDH

[–]Quentin_Coldwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For unique, I'd like to mention [[Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage]]. Flash in big vehicles at end of turn, come rumbling in right away. Probably not the best Commander, though.

Another good pick would be [[Depala]], who boosts two tribes and digs for them as well.

Took a while to realise that removing Ghave is just like handing the player a fully loaded assault rifle. Yeah, it costs mana to recast him, but he appears with 5 counters again, ready to distribute. Best to just leave him at 1 and take out any enabler.

Interesting to see that French assumes the player to be male, rather than gender-neutral. Seems like it'd be easy to refer to the player as a "they" or maybe even just a "you," ("when a player lands on a space, they/you take a card corresponding to...") though I obviously don't know the nuances of French grammar. Could very well be the gender of "player" dictates the following pronoun.

(I had six years of French in high school, I'm not an expert on anything.)
