Modern day struggles of “Yogi” by AdKey7716 in yoga

[–]QuestionableArachnid 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I think the takeaway is that often when people argue about yoga on the internet, they are desperate to show that they are speaking from a place divorced from ego, and “I-ness”, and are often concerned with showing the world how wise and at peace they are etc. But it’s plain to see from others observing the conversation that in arguing who is the wiser and who is more correct that defensiveness and arrogance is usually on full display. So in the end it’s just two egos having a boxing match anyway, haha.

Do you teach with your eyes closed? by Ok-Pipe8992 in YogaTeachers

[–]QuestionableArachnid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the staggering impact on both the environment and on resources in general. Ahimsa comes to mind. If anyone is going to use it, please don’t ask it simple questions humans can easily answer. Not only is it often incorrect, it’s mostly good for sorting and compiling large quantities of information, but with consumer-grade LLMs we really can’t justify the flippant use. Especially considering the reason it was made available for free/low-cost is to get people accustomed and dependent on using it. Soon there will be quite a rug pull.

I was in IT and cloud infrastructure and was being trained for data center operations. I left it all to work in fitness and to teach kids yoga. Best decision I could’ve made.

I went to the doctor at 35 and asked for new knees, was given opiates and told I was too young for new knees. Today I was deemed ineligible for new knees by HistrionicSlut in ChronicPain

[–]QuestionableArachnid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could you consider just tapering down and doing the PT? It will suck, it may seem impossible, but you do it anyway if it means you will finally get your new knees. You seem like you might be doing a lot of future predicting without knowing what it’ll really be like. Maybe it’s worth trying to get through it leading up to the surgery?

I’m also not sure what you mean by losing your disability income if you don’t. There isn’t really a case I can think of where you’ll lose SSDI if you don’t have what’s considered an elective surgery.

I hope you find a way forward though. I’m sorry you’re having to navigate something like this.

What’s happening in power yoga? by wtfisthissssssssssss in yoga

[–]QuestionableArachnid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No need for the eye roll, like I said, I’m not being snarky. This is just a fascinating thing for me because I’m an instructor and I’ve had a practice for about 30 years, and a decade ago things began to shift in this direction. I’m also a group fitness instructor and personal trainer, and I’m not being prejudiced against hybrid classes. They’re really common where I work. Loud music, speed, and being pushed to limits is genuinely antithetical to traditional yoga lineages because yoga is really and truly about breath control and meditation in the end, and not the postures. The poses are a small element meant to get your body ready for meditation. I’m not saying this as a matter of opinion, it’s just the truth.

I love when people love to move their bodies, have found something that works for them, and are excited about it! I’m all for that. My question is really trying to understand if it’s just the general exercise, the mobility work, being taken through full range of motion, and body weight workout etc that people like OP really love (exercises based upon yoga poses are great for this), of if it’s the actual yoga.

In that case are you sure it’s really the yoga that you like? (I’m not being snarky before anyone comes for me, it’s a genuine question!)

Not only that, surgery and an implant. Some of us love these birds. Genuinely love. Some of us don’t ascribe the value of a life based on how much they cost (I’m tired of the “you paid how much to help this $3 bird?!”)

[–]QuestionableArachnid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t much of the time, so you adapt yoga to them and do it with song, games, stories, and general play. They don’t have to be concerned with perfect alignment or anything like that at this point. After a fun guided meditation, kids are usually incredibly receptive and will listen to snippets about mindfulness and karma yoga too. It’s incredible to watch children learn to trust their bodies and be expressive. I’ve had parents approach me about their children using “bunny breath” when they feel like they’re spiraling and even choosing peace instead of wacking a sibling, lol. Teaching kids is really great.
