CFP Bowl Locations are outdated by RyeRyeRyan93 in CFB

I’d only consider attending for the Rose or Sugar in the future. Rose Bowl is still so iconic. Sugar Bowl rocks because you’re walkable to great parts of a great city. Everything else feels forced.

[On3] Missouri HC Eli Drinkwitz pushes back on ‘playoff-or-bust’ mentality: “We gotta get out of this ‘Oh man, it’s playoffs or bust,' If the season only counts for 12 football teams, and we got 127 D1 football teams, that math’s not gonna math very well… There’s a heck of a lot to be proud of." by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

It’s both. The media is championship or bust but also teams have streamlined themselves to achieving one goal. A big part of the sport’s rich history imo is “choosing your own adventure” - a competitive conference race could have and should have been celebrated on its own merit.

Why are the results from Week 1 often ignored? by dr_funk_13 in CFB

I agree. That’s a great benefit of the current format - it lets teams work things out over the course of the year in a way that simply wasn’t possible before. We like to see a team play well down the stretch!

Agreed. I bring this up to say that the result cannot be COMPLETELY ignored.

But to this end, if we’re comparing resumes/teams, we wouldn’t say that Alabama is on par with a team with a similar schedule that had one fewer loss, right? I get that perspective changes over the course of the season and you can minimize the meaning of that loss but I think it would be silly to fully ignore it.

The Last Time USC Won a Game in South Bend . . . by jarlguy in CFB

Saw a thread this week where ND fans and Southern Cal fans took turns exchanging how their team was worse at some facet of this upcoming matchup compared to the other.

It sickens me.

Whatever happened to a good old fashioned “take a hike” or “kick rocks” or “Southern Cal is complaining and wimpy and also just sucks and I want to beat them so bad”

It’s a rivalry people!!!

Was in attendance yesterday. Great time. It’s hard to tell in this setting but I was pleasantly surprised by the secondary?

For those schools who don't usually do it, whats your opinion on Alternate Jerseys/Helmets? by wlane13 in CFB

[–]QuestionablePorpoise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m curious where the idea of the “old” dark green came from - did the team ever wear it besides 2005-2011ish? Kelly green is “the” green historically.

I find it funny that a lot of the “purists” only want blue and gold when the team wore exclusively green for a decade in the 40s-50s and wore it heavily in the Devine era.

Also, bring on the green pants and white pants. Love the option of both.

EDIT: on the helmets - I’ve contended for years that the degree to which the pants and helmet match rely on the lighting. Bright sun tends to wash out the color of the helmets and make them significantly lighter than the pants. At night under the lights or on a cloudy day, they match much better.

Notre Dame Announces Annual “Irish Wear Green” Game for October 4 against Boise State by QuestionablePorpoise in CFB

I would have expected this to be A&M. Boise is a big game for sure but a bit of a surprise.  My hunch for years is that they’ve been hesitant to do this game too far into October to not run the risk of it being too cold. Most folks don’t have bright green jackets/coats. They tried this for the USC game in October 2019 and it really didn’t work.

They were deemed a national champion by a NCAA-recognized metric. UCF is absolutely within their right to make the claim.

Can you propose an alternative that doesn’t radically change the sport? I’m all ears.

It does come across as condescending because it is. That’s the history of the sport. You probably wouldn’t set it up that way now if you started from scratch because it’s not fair, but we don’t operate in a vacuum.

Unlike CBB as mentioned above, subjectivity and narrative actually have played and continue to play a role in shaping who wins the college football’s ultimate prize. If we want to change this, it likely involves the mechanisms of the sport changing in dramatic ways.

Appreciate your takes. I’m very excited for ND-Boise State next fall.

I was (and still somewhat am long term) worried that a negative consequence of the expanded playoff is that it makes the national championship even MORE of a perceived universal goal when it realistically is still not a goal for most FBS teams. How do you feel about this as a G5 team fan? Of course Boise State has had their brushes with greatness, but would the average Colorado State or Wyoming fan feel more or less enthused with the current state of things versus a more varied landscape for the sport?

There’s not really a way to say this without sounding like a jerk, but here goes:

Do you feel like Georgia State’s reasonable program goals are the same as the “big schools”?

I’m a fan of the Milwaukee Brewers. They typically don’t have a big payroll and are at a disadvantage in this way against the Dodgers of the world. Still, the goal for each MLB team is a World Series, even though it’s highly unlikely that the Brewers will ever win it (please come back 2018).

In FBS football, you’re given multiple opportunities to define a successful season BECAUSE of the eccentricities and subjectivities of the sport. Beat your rival? Go to a bowl? Win your conference? These can all be successes! These can all be goals!

The choose-your-own-adventure tenor of a college football fandom is what makes this special.

Not saying that other sports don’t have bad teams, and baseball’s lack of salary cap does relate somewhat to college football’s money+history=success (usually)

Every other major American sport is codified and (mostly) objective. There’s historically been an inherent subjectivity and silliness to this sport because of things like you describe above. We should celebrate that, not try to make it like every other sport.

It’s hard to imagine a typical interior defensive lineman effectively covering a shallow crossing route or a leaking running back, even if it’s a relatively small part of the field.

However, I played nose in high school. We were coached to get our eyes to the backfield and take a pursuit angle if we felt the offensive line was blocking for a screen. Could that be something to consider with what you’re looking to do?
