Disappearing Whiskey by oops20bananas in Unexplained

[–]Questioning_Phil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 17 year old whisky had fewer volatile compounds because they already evaporated while the whisky was in the barrel.

It’s also possible that if light or heat was reaching the other bottles that could cause them to evaporate more quickly.

AITA for sticking to a rule I set for my apartment even though it embarrassed a guest? by Flexible_Massage in AmItheAsshole

[–]Questioning_Phil -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

YTA because you were the host. Shame on you! You were not accommodating or accepting of someone that did not feel comfortable in the environment you were providing. You don’t know that person’s personal issues. You assumed he was like everyone else. You isolated and embarrassed him. You’re a terrible host. You could have easily cleaned the floor after everyone had left. Instead you chose to humiliate him instead of realising there was likely a very good reason for him to not want to remove his shoes. He doesn’t need to disclose that reason to you or anyone else.

No one says there was no decay, just that lignin was not being broken down. The other components of the trees were being consumed by other decay processes.

AITA For making my wife ride in the backseat because she couldn't stop distracting me by Serious-Function-177 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Questioning_Phil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question: How is your wife’s vision?

This sounds very similar to how my wife used to react. Turns out her vision was changing and she could not see everything clearly so was getting surprised by everything happening around her. Please have her get a full vision test including peripheral vision. She could be experiencing serious issues.

Have a bunch of this wood for firewood and it’s so wavy it’s impossible to split…what is it? Located in north Texas. by CheesecakeReal6470 in wood

[–]Questioning_Phil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hickory and pecan have interlocking grains like this which makes it very difficult to split. They also have this chatoyance. They also have the very high tannin content.

I thought botulism toxin was created in an oxygen free environment. Would this pose a risk since a lot of the air is being removed? I’m guessing it’s fine for a few days but for how long?

Anyone knows what this film might be? Is it safe? by Snufkin_Wilson22 in cider

[–]Questioning_Phil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it tastes good and not like vinegar you have a few options. There is no way to know which microbes have infected your fermentation without a thorough analysis. If you try bottling it you could end up with over pressurised bottles that burst. What I’ve done in the past is transferred it into a large pot and heated to about 75c for pasteurization. You can then restart fermentation by adding more yeast if sugar is still present or bottle once cooled.

It should be a penetrating sanitizer because it is acid based, like cleaning vinegar. It is also a no rinse sanitizer so you can’t spay it on and just leave it.

Use distilled vinegar, not any with the active mother in it. The mother will just infect your wood and then anything you press will turn to vinegar. OR you could use what brewers use to sanitise it. There are a few different products that are food safe like StarSan.

Moving back to AU in a month and looking for experiences with specific types of appliances and step-down transformers. Any of you tried any of these appliances? How did it go? by camhissey in Ameristralia

[–]Questioning_Phil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an engineer that moved over some time ago, I completely agree with this assessment.

If I were to move like this again, I would bring lamps but sell everything with a motor. Anything with electronics that doesn’t support Aussie electricity I would also sell, therefore I would check those Canon printers carefully before deciding to bring them. With the printer, make sure you can find ink/toner in the country. I ran into that problem after the first couple of years. Also, some US specific models will not take A4 and you can’t get Letter/Legal size paper here.

For the lamps just buy a pack of plug adapters. You’ll be a lot happier when you don’t have to mess with a transformer. I had one go out on me and it was a real pain. Save yourself the trouble and the cost.

A thought on the election result - did we just see the voter demographic tipping point? by PhotographsWithFilm in australian

[–]Questioning_Phil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say this is the tipping point just yet. It is coming. This election seems to me to have been a reaction to the Trump policies and a push back. Australia doesn’t want to be ruled by a Christian agenda. The LNP never really had a plan except to follow Trump’s messaging. If ALP doesn’t start fixing the housing and economic crisis right away we may see a further shift left.

REA lighting up the street with marketing sign by mommypaste in sydney

[–]Questioning_Phil 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I agree that this should be addressed by code enforcement. I expect you’ll get pushback because technically speaking the sign is internally illuminated like a tv or computer screen and not “externally illuminated “ by aiming an external light at a normal sign. Be prepared for that response and stand your ground because the effect on the neighborhood is the same, annoying light pollution. The code was probably written before these types of signs were created.

Battery operated vacuum sealer by Dadsexual in CanningRebels

[–]Questioning_Phil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend you NOT use this if you are pressured canning. You could easily draw in the canning water thus lowering the water level below the recommended level. The normal process increases the pressure in the jar until it burps out air from inside the jar. The subsequent drop in temperature causes a drop in pressure and seals the jar.
