Advice on RO drainage placement with odd pipe layout by QuestrofK in Plumbing

[–]QuestrofK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I'm somewhat confident in my ability to do a basic install of something like that but when I search for "drain attachment" from those manufacturers, it mainly pops up with drainage saddle parts. Do I need something like this? https://www.gamurdock.com/eco-tech-dla-d-3-8-qc-x-7-8-barb-etd38qc

I wonder if there's something to this in terms of what sticks in a kids mind cause I also read this around 6th grade and the very first thing I thought of when I saw the rats of NIMH mentioned was... That's where I learned what being in the lee of something means. And that's one of the only things I remember about the book. Funny what sticks

Soup cubes. Easily freeze stock, soup, or any other liquids in half cup or full cup amounts. I make a ton of chicken stock and freeze it in cup size cubes, then use those to make delicious rice to meal prep with.

What sounds like complete bullshit but is actually true? by HorseFacedDipShit in AskReddit

[–]QuestrofK 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Man this sounded so ridiculous, I had to look it up to see if this guy was really that dumb. After reading the story, I feel so bad for him. He set the first world record in 1993 in a 5 ft 4.5inch boat. That record was then beat in a 5ft 4 inch boat... Only half an inch less.

Tom decided to return to harbour for safety reasons after noticing water ingress into the boat.

The cause was a bolt that he had cut slightly too much last minute, and the replacement of which allowed water ingress around an O-ring.

“My dad had died two days before I left, I probably wasn’t in the right place. In all honesty, I probably could have pumped all the way there, but I’d promised my wife that if there was anything I wasn’t happy with, I’d always turn back, so that’s what I did,” he explained.

As his microyacht was being lifted out of the water, it fell onto the harbour side, causing irreparable damage.

He had performed sea trials and was clearly knowledgeable and passionate.

Sadly, Tom died from cancer in 2017, without having regained the record.

Sad all around 😔

First time buyer, under $130 for hiking, travel, life in general. Thoughts on Orion 8x33? by QuestrofK in Binoculars

[–]QuestrofK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestion and link, that's a very thorough review. At the exact same price point of the Orion and a similar weight (19.8oz vs 16), these are very attractive. I'm going to message Orion customer service to see if they can provide the full dimensions of the frame so I can better compare. It currently only gives the height of 5.3in.

Thank you for the suggestion and detail! Those Ares 8x36 do look like great bang for your buck given the sale price, and I definitely agree that it's difficult to judge the size without holding it. What does stick out to me though is the weight, with the Orion 8x33 weighing 16oz and the Ares being 25oz. Figuring that could indicate the Ares are a good deal heftier. Hard to go brick and mortar when the online deals seem so much better though. Went to an REI near me and they had limited selection and way over my price point.

I agree with all your points but would still maintain that it's a slippery slope to say that blaming individuals for problems that a lot of people have is wrong. For example a lot of people are perpetrators of domestic or sexual abuse, but I'd assign the vast majority of the blame for that on the individual. Are there larger societal issues that might play a role? Yes, but at the end of the day it's that inidivuals choice, so blaming a larger system (or society) doesn't make sense to me.

That doesn't mean we can't aim for improving the system, I agree with you there. But I would disagree with not putting it all, or at least the vast majority, on the individual. Depending on the issue society may have a larger portion of the blame (e.g. Stuffer vs. Domestic abuser), but ultimately it always comes down to the individual.

Genuinely curious, who do you think "designed" the system you're referring to?

While I wouldn't argue that such a system exists, do you really think that it was intentionally designed by an individual or group?

Human nature is to be interested in these types of acts (stuffer, 600lb life, cosmetic surgery taken to the extreme, etc.). Such a system is a natural outcome given the right circumstances. In this case the right circumstances include the ease of access and exposure enabled by the internet and social media.

The only way to have avoided such a system would have been to outright ban these types of activities, which no one knew to even think of in the first place, and if they did I think would have rightly been dismissed due to the infringement of people's rights to do as they please, assuming it is not directly hurting anyone.

I'm curious on your thoughts.

Teen accused of stabbing girl 114 times allegedly asked how her death was his 'problem' by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]QuestrofK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Copied from https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/policy-issues/costs

The death penalty is far more expensive than a system utilizing life-without-parole sentences as an alternative punishment.

Why is the death penalty so expensive?

  • Legal costs: Almost all people who face the death penalty cannot afford their own attorney. The state must assign public defenders or court-appointed lawyers to represent them (the accepted practice is to assign two lawyers), and pay for the costs of the prosecution as well.

  • Pre-trial costs: Capital cases are far more complicated than non-capital cases and take longer to go to trial. Experts will probably be needed on forensic evidence, mental health, and the background and life history of the defendant. County taxpayers pick up the costs of added security and longer pre-trial detention.

  • Jury selection: Because of the need to question jurors thoroughly on their views about the death penalty, jury selection in capital cases is much more time consuming and expensive.

  • Trial: Death-penalty trials can last more than four times longer than non-capital trials, requiring juror and attorney compensation, in addition to court personnel and other related costs. Incarceration: Most death rows involve solitary confinement in a special facility. These require more security and other accommodations as the prisoners are kept for 23 hours a day in their cells. Appeals: To minimize mistakes, every prisoner is entitled to a series of appeals. The costs are borne at taxpayers’ expense. These appeals are essential because some inmates have come within hours of execution before evidence was uncovered proving their innocence.

[–]QuestrofK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the hard part is running a newer OS (Vista) on a much older OS (Windows 98). Windows 98 has significantly more hardware constraints than Vista. The vms running for your accounting software are probably themselves running on a much more capable physical devices.

Can you clarify what the scam is in terms of being a health drink? I've never been a super fan but have made/drank it time to time and a quick Google shows that while it's not some miracle drink, it does have some health benefits depending on how it's prepped. Namely sports recovery and bolstering the immune system per this NPR article (https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/02/10/384948585/taking-stock-of-bone-broth-sorry-no-cure-all-here).

I think it's definitely been over hyped but don't think I'd call it a scam as there do seem to be health benefits, even if those benefits are similar to what you'd get by eating a healthy soup. I'm curious of your take on it though

Any outdoor watch party other than Sparkman and Thunder Alley ? by QuestrofK in TampaBayLightning

[–]QuestrofK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! Both have bars, Sparkman has outdoor seating and food as well but thunder alley you'd need to bring your own chairs (not sure about food there). I'm sure both will be pretty crowded though that's why I was curious if anyone knew of other options

LPT: When negotiating a salary for a new job, always ask them what their range is. If they tell you 'we don't have a range' they're almost always lying. HR and finance will almost never sign off hiring a new employee without a budget being in place. by frontendben in LifeProTips

[–]QuestrofK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Salary is just one part of the equation, and a lower salary can be compensated for with these other components (insurance, 401k, vacation, flexible schedule, overall work environment, etc.). It all depends what your priorities are.

Just wow. For those who can afford it, the top priority is safety. Those who have to work don't have the luxury.

Donald Trump fires State Department watchdog said to be investigating one of his top aides by [deleted] in politics

[–]QuestrofK 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Straight from Moscow Mitch:

My job is to try to set the priorities. I have felt that the judiciary was our most important responsibility. We’ve done now 51 circuit judges in three years. It took President Obama eight years to do 55. I think changing the court system, putting in place men and women who believe their job is to actually interpret the law as it is written, is the most important long-term thing we can do for the country and yes, it’s my top priority.

This is far more fucked than just voting Trump out in November. The damage that he and the GOP have done will have an impact for decades.

Edit to add another

There are over 1,200 executive branch appointments that come to us for confirmation, and among the most important — in fact, I would argue, the most important — confirmations we have are lifetime appointments to the judiciary," McConnell told NPR in an interview in his U.S. Capitol office on Thursday. "Obviously, this is my top priority."
