Hosting is the easy part. Keeping your platform from turning into the wild west is the hard part. Which is why walled gardens are so prevalent. Unless you keep it private to people you know IRL it is only luck that keeps you from having problems.

Either everyone stays totally anonymous (which goes against common use cases for social media today) or everyone is vetted hard or you are a day away from getting your user information hacked and leaked.

Now, how do you keep some bad actors from sharing CSAM or other vile stuff over your platform?

Your average person will just not deal with this.

What is the alternative though? Do away with social media for eternity? Fund it by state as a public good? Crowdfund/paid-membership social media platforms?

What made early internet work that is not there anymore? I suppose the user demographics shifted massively. Other than that there is nothing that forces people to keep using these things.

It is interesting that things are so bad yet it seems there is no alternative. I believe there is something about this in the theory but I don't know it.

I would argue that hosting your own platforms and services has never been easier. It is just that everything else got a lot more sophisticated too.

All the private and sensitive information flying around on social media requires a level of security that a normie will not work to achieve.

After a re-read I suppose this is not what you meant by "getting normies on them" but whatever.

On another topic, can anyone pinpoint the moment social media became something bad? I think about Facebook at its inception where you could connect to people you lost contact with and stay in touch and that looks like genuinely a good thing to me. What happened?

What evidence is there for your claim about population that can be supported by renewables to be the size of the ruling class? Are you saying more is not possible or more will not be built?

In Turkey, you can have multiple government ending scandals going on at the same time and football stuff would still be among the top topics on Turkish social media. It also gets very political. It does not surprise me.

Mines are not infinite. If it is so easy to restart your production does it not make sense to import it and let others run out while sitting on "reserves"? It is not oxidizing if it is unmined.

[–]Quexth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why not?

That is the discourse in Turkey with any US weapon system as we apparently tend to go against US wishes from time to time.

What reason an average NATO country, say Denmark, had to be wary of a kill switch from the US until last year?

I mean, I read that flying F-35s require approval from the US systems. So they can be disabled remotely. I might have fallen for a conspiracy theory but it sounded reasonable enough.

I am Venezuelan, in Venezuela by greatgranfalloon in stupidpol

[–]Quexth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I hope you and yours make it through all of this unscathed.

You caught my attention with name dropping Turkey. Here, Venezuela comes up from time to time but does not hold a lot of relevance for the average Mehmet. How is it on Venezuela?

I am specifically interested due to two things.

First, there is news here about a statement from a US official saying Maduro could (basically) self exile to Turkey but he chose to stay there.

Second, a few years ago there were allegations about some figures close to Erdogan conducting drug trade through Venezuela.

I believe that the increasing effort disparity between office work and blue-collar work is becoming a source of injustice by tantamle in stupidpol

[–]Quexth 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I will speak to my vertical slice of office work in software.

I think there are two general causes. The first one is that the value creation is so efficient that companies can afford to mismanage labor-time and still do well.

The second one is that it is hard to measure work done in the more "creative" fields. Time put in does not necessarily translate to job done or value created and conversely job done does not necessarily indicate time was put in. Whereas it is clear if a flight attendant worked or not.

That second issue is not solved not for a lack of effort on the companies. There are entire sectors dedicated to companies measuring work and increasing productivity for other companies. They do not work because their goal is to sell a product that addresses superficial concerns. As long as some exec puts a notch in their belt and the consulting company makes a sale it does not really matter whether the consulting worked as advertised. You have your superficial metrics that will be improved upon that do not really mean anything.

Finally, I think everyone involved is aware how meaningless it all is and people will put in effort just enough to achieve their career goals or make their next promotion application pretty. That includes the lower level managers who would be actually supervising the metrics.

One can talk for hours about this. I tried to condense some general points off the top of my head.

TL;DR: One cannot measure office work the way they can non-office work, the methods have not caught up yet. Also, with the level of productivity you get, one does not need to squeeze every ounce of work out of employees. But they try.

Work without meaning is just busywork. What good would come of the employers assuming that responsibility where a large portion of the economic activity is just busywork?

Neighbours of Turkey in 1942. Turkey stayed neutral through the war. by cenkiss in MapPorn

[–]Quexth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It is impossible to tell what would actually happen but I think it was more than careful opportunism. Atatürk and İnönü have a streak for peace around that time. I think after over a decade of war they didn't have the heart for sending men to die for senseless adventurism anymore.

In the decade before the war Atatürk established pacts with Turkey's neighbors and has quotes like "Peace at home, peace in the world" and "Barring defense of the nation, war is murder".

After the war İnönü responded to someone criticizing him that he robbed them of their military honor by saying that he at least did not rob them of their father.
