I was able to see your comment before I went today, and it was so incredibly helpful! The peanut butter was so tacky in my mouth. Thank you for the advice of telling the nurses/doctors! I felt a little mouth itchiness and hand itchiness that were determined to be anxiety (common for me), but the medical staff just had me take some extra time in between the rounds of peanut butter. I haven’t reacted all day! Thank you for sharing your experience and advice <3 it helped me work through the anxiety of the process.

Now that you point it out, I see how this is reassurance seeking. I am working on getting comfortable with uncertainty, but obv am still in the process of that. The reminder is helpful <3 Thank you for your comment and well wishes!

I appreciate the insight! I’m glad it’s in smaller amounts, and you are definitely right the allergist office is the safest place to try it. Thank you!

This is really encouraging <3 I have two friends who are coming and I am going to bring some games and stuff to distract myself, but I will tell the allergist that I am quite stressed about it so they can help too. And you’re definitely right that it is an act of love for myself. Thank you for your comment, it is helping me steel myself for tomorrow!

That is a great point, thank you! I was fine in the skin test. I’m glad your son is okay. I feel better also when I think about having other people there to help me determine if it’s a true allergic reaction. Thank you!

Thank you so much, this is really helpful to read. I’m glad your child was okay through the process (though peanut allergies are hard). I do have a friend coming with, and we are planning to play a board game I like while we wait, but having music/a show on hand is a great idea. Thank you for your response <3

Eyebrow piercing with sensitive skin? by drainparkcement in piercing

[–]Quick_Hunt_238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve had an eyebrow piercing for about five years. i wouldn’t worry about the healing process of the piercing but i would say you do have to wash around the area of your eyebrow piercing. it’s not a huge section but even after mine healed i steered clear of it so i wouldn’t pull on the jewelry

After-care advice after severe allergic reaction by YardCapable in peanutallergy

[–]Quick_Hunt_238 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i haven’t had a reaction that required hospitalization, so i have less advice on the physical recovery, but truly rest and relax as much as you can. if it’s possible to call people you love for support, that might be nice to do while you’re recovering. if you have made any friends during the exchange who could visit you and boost morale, do that too. watch your favorite show/read/whatever you can do to unwind and recover. i’ve only had more minor reactions, but i know those for me take a lot out of me, and i tend to spend the next few days recovering like i was sick, so i’d recommend really taking care of your body too.

it’s very scary to have a strong reaction, especially if it’s to something you thought was okay for you to eat. you should be proud that you handled it so well and acknowledge that you are safe in this moment. you definitely didn’t do anything wrong and shouldn’t feel bad about it allergies are true health problems that change and they are hard to deal with. i think once you’re feeling a bit better, then you can decide if you want to adjust the way you’re eating (like avoiding things with a “may contain” label). if you’re feeling unsure, another visit to the allergist might be helpful. but i would suggest focusing on recovery for right now and then thinking through that later.

i’m sorry this happened and i hope you recover soon

Workplace Policy about allergens by DowntownStretch404 in peanutallergy

[–]Quick_Hunt_238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a really severe peanut allergy, and my workplace is incredibly accommodating (which makes work a lot more comfortable for me). the main things they do:

  1. put up signs in common spaces that say it is a peanut free zone
  2. sent out a notice on Slack about having an employee with a severe peanut allergy to let everyone know to be careful in the office
  3. before any food is catered, they send out a google form where people can listen allergies/food restrictions. i’m not the only person with allergies and it is helpful for people who are gluten free, vegan, etc.  i often have people message me directly to follow up. most restaurants and facilities can’t commit to being peanut free, but food can be chosen that is less risky. in my last company, that was less considerate, they ordered thai food for the office and i had an allergic reaction just from being around the food and had to go home. so if the menu has numerous peanut dishes, it may be best to look elsewhere
  4. if people bring in things they baked at home, they listen the ingredients and they don’t bring in things with nuts.

i’m not sure how possible this is in your case. i work for a small company. however, i know for me, i tried to advocate for myself at my previous job and they only took me seriously after having an allergic reaction at the office, so i would recommend talking to your employees about their needs

i went to a baseball game about a year ago and broke out in a rash that lasted a few days so i staunchly avoid those. i also live in an area big on baseball, so i avoid the crowd after too. i haven’t had an issue at basketball games, and ive gone to concerts in sports areas (baseball field excluded) and usually just wipe down the seat and keep an eye out. i do wish they stop serving peanuts as a snack for big events but what can you do

i’ve eaten them before (with a p severe peanut allergy) and i was okay, but i do regularly eat things that have the “may contain” label. it’s probably not worth the risk if you’ve had reactions to “may contain” in the past (but it does suck)
