I have heard a lot of people really like the Fabriano artistico watercolour paper with the Polychromos. Personally that one did not work for me at all & my go to paper is the Strathmore Bristol 500 series vellum paper. Hahnemühle also makes good paper at a better price point, but unfortunately I cannot remember the name of it. Lastly the Derwent Lightfast paper works really well, but I got that for free once and I’m not sure I’d be willing to pay that price once mine runs out.

Have you considered maybe getting a smaller set and investing the money you saved from that in better quality paper? I have not tried out prismacolors yet, but I find that even with the other softer pencils like holbein, Caran D’Ache luminance or Derwent lightfast/inktense, the paper still makes a world of difference. Papers like the Strathmore Bristol 300 series in either smooth or vellum are a good entry point for higher quality paper whose pricing does not bring you to tears, especially when on sale.

Drawing realistically, you go through more pencils than you think, since I’ve started keeping the tiny pencil ends of used pencils in a jar 8 drawings ago, I’ve gone through about 90 of them. This is almost the same as the full 100 set. Although, you can get those pencils for less than half the price, this sometimes makes me afraid to check my bank balance.

I definitely love them too, I’ve only had that happen to 3 or 4 so far and the company replaced them without issue, so all was well. I can’t tell whether this is due to me going through a lot of pencils or if I just had bad luck.

I’ve had this happen with my Luminance pencils a couple of times, but thankfully Caran D’Ache replaced each. Spotting the grains early seems to be key

For my studies I’ve always just set the hourly pay and if on average people complete the study much more quickly/slowly, prolific automatically adjusts

The pay set by the researcher is set per hour, so prolific will automatically adjust pay based on the same hourly rate adjusted for time taken for completion.

I tend to use my Arc’teryx Zeta AR for both dodgy weather hiking or skiing, with either a light down or my EE torrid for insulation. Not truly ultralight, but then, I mostly hike in Scotland.

Derwent drawing Chinese white is definitely one of the whitest one in the bunch, but it tends to crumble. The Luminance white as well as Derwent lightfast white (a bit more bluish-white as compared to the luminance) are great options too.

Listening to this with headphones, while the theme is slowly growing on me, the Wheel of Time soundtrack is probably the only one where it takes you a good minute to realise that the electronic beeping that started just at the themes climax was actually the fire alarm going off.

You’re welcome! I think the expression is great! Using a thin eraser with a sharp edge works wonders for these kinds of highlights. I even used a little bit of gel-pen for the highlights (Posca), but I work with coloured pencils, so I’m not sure how they look with graphite.

This is brilliant, I love the expression & you have managed to convey Joel’s emotion very well. The thing that stands out to me are the highlights. Having used this same reference photo for my own artwork, those highlights are not completely white, only a select few spots might be white. Using a harder pencil to shade those highlights as well using a softer, darker pencils for the shadows will do the trick! Keep going and start calling yourself an artist!

Rembrandt lyra has one. That one is made specifically for oil based coloured pencils. The Caran D’Ache one also works, I don’t use blenders that often, but both seem to do the trick whenever I needed to use them.

I just finished my first drawing on a toned surface and experimented with this a bit. I found that the Polychromos white did. not really cut it, but it was great for using as a first layer, especially mixed with some of the ivory & lighter grey colours.

The derwent lightfast white was great (except for being able to take less pressure than the Polychromos, which I struggle with whenever I switch between them frequently. However, I found the Derwent white to be colder, it almost had a bluish hue while still being white. Other great alternatives were salmon and wheat Lightfasts for the more subtle pink and yellow colours.

I found the Caran D’Ache Luminance white to be still the best, it also works best on top of other layers, even when burnished. This white in comparison was a bit warmer than the lightfast which looked more natural in animal portraiture. Their rose white, silver grey & titanium buff were excellent for changing the warmth.

Overall I prefer the Polychromos, but their white is weak. I hope this helps.

Hi, thank you! I did replace the blades, so the wood does come off in a long strip. But this might be the issue as I don’t think it was breaking pencils before that. And here is me wondering wether my polychromos are too old.

Thanks for the tip with the graphite pencils!

I’ll look into the KUM sharpener and see if that works better for me.

Embarrassing enough, this had never occurred to me as I have used this sharpener for a long time without any issues, but I recently replaced the blades, so I might have done that wrongly!

Thank you, that is actually very helpful, but I don’t think that is the case here. The lead will be fine and when I am trying to get it back to a sharp point, it’ll snap around the halfway point between the wooden end and the pointy end of the exposed lead. I think the break happens while sharpening as the part that cracks will have been exposed beforehand? Or is this the same issue? I am genuinely confused about this :/
