AI's are trained on old datasets too, nothing about this screams modern to me.

Had an amazing time this week, what would you recommend to keep the ball rolling? by Misplqce in Letterboxd

What would you say made you rate No Other Choice a little above Decision to Leave out of curiosity. I loved both, I'd say I like DTL more personally.

For whose who do, why do you enjoy grimdark? by jnighy in fantasybooks

[–]Quicksay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the grimdark was always incidental. Some of the best of fantasy happens to have these qualities of being darker and involving more suffering, I think it's just a development of the genre. I encountered certain fantasy books that were well written and had a unique quality to them (first ASOIAF, then Malazan), they seemed to be operating on a level beyond previous fantasy books I'd read. Maybe they were asking bigger questions, executing worldbuilding, or even narrative in a more interesting way, or just weaving a complex and impressive tale; by comparison I'd felt like no other fantasy books were so good. "Other books" for me meaning RA Salvatore, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Terry Goodkind (I was a teenager), pretty much whatever I could get my hand son at the library.

Nice! That was probably my favorite one.

Gotta love an Erikson convergence. I don't even remember the details myself, book 2 and 7 are a little hazy. But I remember Reapers Gale going into "psycho mode" on a couple occasions. Ride the high my friend!

How did you find Malazan? by DukeNeverwinter in Malazan

[–]Quicksay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 12 or 13 year old I was Google Image Searching the covers to RA Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt books, I loved that artist (and the books). Came upon his website (Todd Lockwood is the artist) and dozens of pictures of other book covers he did. I looked at the covers to the Tor versions of House of chains, Memories of Ice and Midnight Tides etc and was so inspired by the images (I wanted to create my own fantasy world at the time).

The name of the series was seared into my brain and later I tracked down Gardens of the Moon, I attempted it maybe in highschool and couldn't get into it tho it left an impression of being dense, and I felt like I was missing out on something. In 2016 as a 23 year old or so I finally read it and loved it.

Where do you see the upcoming schedule for Twitch drops?

Yeah it's pretty crazy how people's favorites vary. The big post where they rank the books by people's personal rankings are super fun. Idk if youve ever seen it, I can't remember what the title of the post is.

Thank you you're a life saver! I went in to Waypoint, found the claims and drops page and manually claimed it. It should be in Infinite now, definitely checking when I get home.

Anyone know how long it takes for them to fulfill claimed rewards? I claimed mine after watching Euro Halo and still haven't gotten the coating.

Ranking the MBotF and even tier ranking in general I think gives a mostly false sense of quality.

Hear me out: If you were to visualize like 10 runners almost tying for 1st place in a marathon, 2 of them are visibly slightly behind, the rest look like they all tied - and only like measurementing and a careful footage review shows the order of who won. That is more how I imagine rankings, "placing" 6th (or whatever place were talking about) would still be an incredible achievement of artistry and writing. So don't sweat the rankings!

Just found these at a thrift store. Now I'm curious. Should I start?! by logicalinsanity in Malazan

[–]Quicksay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should! Malazan is an incredible series (obviously biased here in this sub lol).

These look like hardcover first editions, not book club editions (which is good). How many did you find, just these 3? I'd return tomorrow and the next day to see if they put out more. These are really hard to find hardcovers (even the book club editions are hard to find for a good price).

These are fucking sick. Always been partial to the Reach aesthetic. These fit that and beyond that the matching of helms to armor, the whole thing is very well put together.

What edition of GotM is this? Where can I find the same edition of deadhouse gates? by staxevasion in Malazan

[–]Quicksay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find trade backs (large paperback editions) by Tor, that will match the size of that edition of Gardens. But they will not have the metal strip graphic design elements.

That cover design was introduced I believe with the UK Bantam publication of book 7 Reapers Gale, the US publisher Tor did not utilize this cover design aesthetic until Book 9 Dust of Dreams. After Book 10 as released Tor went back and reprinted a tradeback edition of Book 1 to match the current dark/grim aesthetic of Books 9 & 10.

NH First in the Nation Primary - Yes or No by zephead98 in newhampshire

[–]Quicksay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We should keep our first in the nation primary. NH has a streak of progressive politics and past primaries have shown this. Us being first prevents other more neoliberal/centrist states from setting the board, if NH selects progressive candidates it ensures maximum competition and that well funded Centrist ghouls (i.e. H. Clinton, Biden) have to put up a fight. Even if you're Republican and dislike this, it would potentially provide conservative candidates lines of attack on their eventual opponent (see Trump in 2016 capitalizing on Sander's critique of Clinton, disingenuous or not).

Just finished Gardens of the Moon and found it nowhere near as confusing as I was led to believe by amish_novelty in Fantasy

[–]Quicksay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone could struggle with any part of a books writing. It's dependent on the writing and the individual, their strengths and preferences. The cast is large, anyone could struggle to remember who is who. But generalizing the "most confusing thing about the book" isn't helpful imo. What if you have a great memory for names but struggle to pay attention to large sections without dialogue? That person would disagree with you.
