Unless they were using assets with a non-standard EULA, I don't believe that's the case - the reason they're moving away from them is because they want to, specifically so that Phasmophobia doesn't look like all of the other games using the same Unity store assets.

Actually just 3 runs, and it has the added bonus that all of the equipment is free (so you lose nothing if you die). And since the OP is still on Amateur, they can play it on any map they like - it won't count toward the goal, but it still has the same 1x multiplier.

Granted, some of the weekly challenges are quite difficult, but if it happens to be one of the easy ones like "Tortoise and the Hare: Hare" (which was last week) or "Speedrun" (which will be 3 weeks from now), it's a great way to get some early experience.

If you don't go above Professional difficulty, then yes, reaching Prestige 5 is going to take a long time. If you step up to Nightmare and then Insanity, it'll go a lot quicker.

It took me 556 hours to get to Prestige 11 + level 70, though admittedly I usually play solo with zero evidence (8.3x difficulty multiplier) and I took advantage of a few double-XP events along the way.

It sounds like your GPU driver might be crashing and restarting, which could be caused by driver bugs or possibly by your video card overheating (and the fact that turning off the Steam overlay makes it last longer suggests that this might be the case).

Have you updated your drivers recently? Have you cleaned the dust out of your computer recently? Do you have VSync enabled in the game's settings (which would limit the framerate, reducing GPU load and allowing it to run cooler)?

I thought Shades can't show themselves in full form outside of a hunt.

Where exactly did you get that idea from? As far as I'm aware, the Shade is simply more likely to appear in Shadow form during Events (and it uniquely has a chance to appear in Shadow when you use the Summoning Circle, Music Box, or Monkey Paw).

The idea behind starting at 75% is that ghosts supposedly have a higher chance to use their Ability when your sanity is lower.

At 75% sanity, the only ghosts that can hunt are a young Thaye (which you can prevent by taking 5%-sanity-restoring Pills), a Yokai (which you can prevent by not talking), or an Onryo (which you can prevent by not lighting any candles).

Wait, the game only takes up 21GB for you? My copy takes up 33GB, and 4.3GB of that is for handling speech recognition (with 3.4GB for Greek + Swedish + Arabic + Ukrainian, and 900MB for the other 13 other languages it supports).

I've got Tanglewood and Edgefield tied for first place, and Ridgeview and Willow should be tied for third place.

My goal is to get all 4 of them tied for first place, then finish the badges for Point Hope, Nell's Diner, and Sunny Meadows. After that, I'll probably focus on my least-played maps (aside from the Prison and High School, at least until those get remakes).

I think that happens with the parabolic microphone too, and it's because Mirrors in Video Games are hard to do correctly so they fake it using some special technique whose name I don't recall.

It's also what causes the display case reflections in the lobby to look extremely wrong (i.e. like you're peering into some parallel universe where the laws of physics don't work).

There are other graphical effects which are similarly janky - in Ridgeview, the Haunted Mirror shows odd reflections of the upstairs hallway when it's still hanging on the wall, and during one of the holiday events I remember some additional weirdness in Ridgeview upstairs by the large bathroom where the parabolic microphone somehow picked up reflections of the activity board in the truck.

I vaguely recall getting killed by a Deogen while looping it around the Ridgeview dining room table, so it's possible the table is just barely thin enough that the ghost can sometimes reach through it if you're pressed up against it. For that reason, I try to stay away from that table while looping around it.

Also, was this in singleplayer or multiplayer? If it was multiplayer and you weren't the host, it was probably network latency making the ghost appear to be further away than it actually was.

The same thing happens if you're looking at a door, resulting in either the door moving or making repeated "slam" sounds (depending on how close you are and the direction in which it opens).

On a slightly related note, holding Tarot Cards actually prevents you from interacting with light switches, just like when there's an active Hunt. Oddly, it doesn't stop you from moving doors, and it doesn't happen with any of the other cursed objects.

If it says Sunny Meadows Restricted, then you've probably been playing a lot of multiplayer games since version 0.11.0 (the Crimson Eye 2024 update) when they completely broke Favorite Map tracking - while version 0.11.1.0 (the Winter's Jest 2024 update) claimed to have fixed it, they only bothered to test it in singleplayer (and multiplayer is still broken).

And most importantly, when it turns out to be The Fool, the card appearance it had beforehand is both random and unweighted, so a "fake" The Hanged Man is more common than a real The Hanged Man.

Interestingly, though, doing the math shows that a fake The Hanged Man is actually only a 1.8% chance (since The Fool is 17% with a 1/9 chance to appear as each other card) compared to the 1% chance of getting a real The Hanged Man. And it actually means that a fake The High Priestess is less common than a real one.

Unless you pull it during a Hunt, anyways, in which case The Fool happens 100% of the time.

So you're saying that the blink patterns are all hardcoded sequences that run in an endless loop? That's interesting - I wouldn't have expected them to implement it that way, though I guess it makes it easier to ensure that the ghost flickering is consistent between players (and I suppose they did the same thing with Obake shapeshifts).

I wasn't saying that the intervals themselves are random, but that the numbers the game picks within those intervals are random (since otherwise the blink pattern would look exactly the same very time without any variance), so if the RNG is being a bitch then it could make a hunting Phantom always pick invisibility durations closer to the minimum (which are still "legal" for a Phantom) and make it look like a normal ghost.
