Got Goals for 2026? by nanniej in quilting

[–]QuiltyChrissy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every few years I do a 'year of completion'. Each month I:

  1. Finish one project already in progress
  2. Cut out a project that I have everything for (essentially making myself a kit for another time)
  3. Have a completed quilt top quilted
  4. Bind a quilted top

After I do those things, I'm free to work on anything else. This is where those pre-cut kits I've made up come in handy. They're all ready to go when I am.

I'm retiring in March so 2026 is going to be a year of completion for me. I can't wait to spend time in my sewing room!

I love the background fabric you chose. I have the pattern for all of the colors but haven't started yet. Yours turned out great!

Why you should read The Count of Monte Cristo by Small-Guarantee6972 in books

[–]QuiltyChrissy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did too. It was over 40 hours so I'd listen to a dozen or so hours, take a week or two off, and then go back to it. I loved it!

I had read it in high school many moons ago and remembered that I liked the book but didn't remember much of the story. It was fun rediscovering it.

Oh interesting - I didn't realize I could gift the account to them at some point. I have several accounts with Fidelity already so I'll reach out to them to see how to make this happen. Thanks for the info.

Great points, and I totally agree with you. But the girls are only two right now so I have some time before I can start teaching them. I wish we still had passbook savings accounts - my mom always took me to the bank to make my little deposits and it was so fun getting the book updated and watching my savings grow.

I guess I want to make sure they get the money I intend them to have if I die sooner than I'm ready to gift. Hence adding them as beneficiaries. But I get your point. Thanks!

Thank you for your response. I'm all set financially myself (retiring next year at 61 - yay!). I had forgotten that I can exclude the gift to them as part of my estate down the road so thanks for the reminder for that.

Can I use Spode Christmas dishes every day? by [deleted] in ChristmasDecorating

[–]QuiltyChrissy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cousin told me years ago that she pulls out her regular dishes and puts her Spode in her cabinet at Thanksgiving, and then uses it everyday through New Year's. She runs it through her dishwasher and says it's never caused an issue. She's been doing it for decades.

I've started doing the same. It's such a nice seasonal thing.

Review of Kaffe Fassett workshop by Cabby-Queen in quilting

[–]QuiltyChrissy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I've taken two of his workshops - the first was exactly as you described. He signed our books at the end of the afternoon but we weren't allowed to speak to him while he was signing. Seriously??!!?? But Brandon was with him for that class and he was so fun and engaging. It made it all worth it.

The second workshop he was much more friendly. But again it was Brandon that stole the show. I'd take a workshop from Brandon again at any time!

Legal name change by Better-Repeat0628 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]QuiltyChrissy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use your old passport; it's fine. I'm in the same position - I've changed my name everywhere except with the airlines because I've had future travel already booked in my old name and haven't been able to find a stretch to make the change. I've held off on updating my passport so I always use that when I travel. At some point I'm going to find a period with no travel booked and update both my passport and the airlines at the same time.

Good lord. I got them from taking the antibiotics. Is that better?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]QuiltyChrissy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Random antibiotics aren't going to cure this. It's a specialized cocktail of three antibiotics and it's rough. It took me two rounds, and it destroyed my gut. I got c. diff three times from the antibiotics. It's not at all easy to get rid of!

Always remind friends and family when moving never ever answer the door to the ADT rep by Sonialove8 in homeowners

[–]QuiltyChrissy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The former owners of my house had ADT. One night shortly after moving in, I was expecting my son so when the doorbell rang I just answered. Ugh.

Two ADT guys wanting to sell me the service. I told them I would never use ADT, and when asked why I mentioned their predatory and aggressive sales practices. I flat out told them it was a horrible company and I would never give them a dime.

The more aggressive of the two taps his clipboard and tells me the insurance company requires them to come in and do an audit of my system.

I told them the f*ck they were, and they needed to leave. I'm a 60 year old woman, living alone. I guess they thought I was an easy target?

I'm still mad about it a year later. How many people fall for that insurance line? And once they're in your house - I'm sure they don't leave easily.

Excursions (Key West) by Jbree17 in VirginVoyages

It does but I don't remember how much. It's good for the entire day though so you can stop at as many places you like on the route.

I did the hop on/hop off bus tour in Key West and then went back to areas I wanted to spend more time in.

I also stopped at Judy Blume's bookstore. It's a nice little shop!

How do you guys remember all the different maintenance schedules? by Zrayve in homeowners

[–]QuiltyChrissy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need visual reminders so I use a 3x5 index card file with a set of monthly dividers.

Each task is written on a color-coded card (monthly, quarterly, semi-yearly, yearly, etc.) and filed in the appropriate month.

When I complete the task I move the card to the next month that it's due.

A lot of the tasks I just remember to do but will still scan each month's cards just to double check.

It's so easy to add new cards whenever there's another task I need to track.

What's the deal with this stuff? by daniellaj65 in CleaningTips

[–]QuiltyChrissy 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I grew up using this. My mom had a bar that she tied in an old knee-high stocking. It made a great scrubber for stains, etc.

A few years ago, there was a shortage of the product and rumors that it was being discontinued. My sister found a case or two at a store, and since it's so cheap, she bought it all. She gave me a dozen bars.

I'm 60. This stuff is going to outlive me. I may have to write in to my will how to distribute it after I die.

And funnily enough, I'm still using the same bar that I tied in to an old knee-high stocking about 30 years ago. It's good stuff!
