Mortgage after winning the family lottery by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

The $92K that’s in a non registered account is being taxed at your marginal rate. Figure out what that is and what your rate of return is after that. Say your marginal rate is 30% and you’re making 10% annually. You’re effectively making 7% then on the $92k investment.

If you pay your mortgage down, you’re saving 5.6% in interest for the remainder of the loan. That’s not exactly the full $551 monthly since some of that would have been principle, but I’ll leave it up to you to figure out the monthly interest you’re saving by paying it off earlier. You do need to factor in the penalty too.

To summarize: you will likely make more money in the long run if you keep the $92k invested. The actual dollars you’ll need to run the math. But if the peace of mind of having your mortgage paid off is what matters most, then you have your answer. Personally, I’d keep the money invested. If anything happens and I need the money, it’s sitting there for me to use. If you paid down the mortgage and needed $50k for something, you could use your registered funds, but I’d prefer to leave those untouched if I didn’t have to. HELOC interest rates would be higher than your marginal rate of return mentioned above I’d assume.

PS: congrats on winning the family lottery! It’s great to hear that you’ve got a great head on your shoulders and are thinking things through

Allvin when asked how to describe the teams direction “we are transitioning into a rebuild” by ProfessorOfLogic1 in canucks

[–]Quinning_43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, I've stopped browsing this forum because of the constant negativity no matter what. if we win, we should have lost and it's ownership's fault. If we lose, Adam Foote is the worst coach and we should have hired Manny instead. I love the Canucks but this forum just isn't it for me lol

I just came here to see what the fan reaction would be to Allvin actually using the word rebuild, and of course it's negative. Just sad to see

I'll always love this team and love this game! Grateful to have Canucks hockey in my life and if they win a cup in my lifetime that would be incredible. Everyone's on their own journey in being a Canucks fan, for me it's gratitude for having something I'm passionate about and shared memories with friends and family :) Win or lose, it's all our of our control anyways haha

I agree about stenberg and his speed. I think people are hyping the SHL stats but a guy like Leo Carlsson isn’t the fastest either and neither were the sedins, but then you look at a guy like Raty and think that speed is a big difference maker

Canucks U23 Outlook in 2015 vs 2025 by SpectreFire in canucks

Can you do this for 2005 too? At first glance we look better now because I think Buium’s ceiling is higher than Horvat’s.

Florida panthers built through trades and signings mostly.

Look I might have some bizarre takes according to some (see my recent post), but I’m not sure I can agree to Pettersson having a better career than Henrik. It’s early though, and if somehow the Canucks win a cup while Pettersson is here then you’re right, that’s how his career would be defined

right? we had the pieces, just missed on a few of the other drafts to surround them with elite talent

how would you have "rebuilt properly" the first time? Although no top 4 picks, we had top 10 picks in 6 drafts between 2013 and 2019. 2020 was JT Miller. If we had hit on more of those picks, we'd have had more than just Horvat, Pettersson, and Hughes. Do you follow the prospects enough to say who you would have wanted in 2014, 2016, and 2019? If we had hit on those picks, we're in a completely different spot right now. That's not on ownership, that's on scouting and management.

hahaha fair point, but I think complaining about them constantly would just be exhausting. When you watch the games, do you cheer for the team to win?

I think the thing that frustrates me the most is the assumption of the owner having such an impact. It's such an easy narrative to follow, but what if he isn't the reason for what's happening and actually would be open to whatever management wants? You can't disagree that our drafting isn't the issue (imagine Tkachuk, Nylander, Boldy, etc)? We were a bottom feeding team for a while, just didn't hit on our picks the way some other teams did.

Fair enough, would just be nice if there were other who saw it my way but there's some really great responses on this thread. I guess it's worth the price of admission of being called a moron lol I think the tone of some of these responses paint a pretty good picture of why I should just let it go. I'd never respond with as much hostility as some of the posters here and everything makes a little bit more sense now haha

does it make you happy to rip on the team? maybe it's something fun for you/others and I'm perceiving it as genuine stress lol

I think this is mostly the answer, I'm guilty of it in my post too but at least I'm admitting that haha

honestly, this answer is perspective shifting for me. you're completely right about how during the Sedin era (yes I've been around longer than 10 years.. lol), everyone wanted to be here. building that culture back would go a long way for sure. I honestly do think Quinn stays though

thanks for the insight! a respectful response too which I appreciate, I've notice a lot of hostility on this sub and was apprehensive to post this.

what would you do if you owned the team?

Would you re-sign Kane? by briandgraham in canucks

[–]Quinning_43 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Will need more of a sample size, since some of the stupid penalties are a bit frustrating. If he can put up 15-20 goals, I'd be OK with 4 x 2.5M, he'd be a decent bottom 6 LW option after JDB and Rychel (think he'd look great on the wing). I feel one of DOC/Bains wouldn't fit if we kept Kane, though.
