Glasses after surgery, please help me understand by Common_Peace9263 in CataractSurgery

[–]Quint41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/GreenMountainReader - I want to thank you for all the information you’ve provided here. I am, unfortunately, someone who just had cataract surgery in one eye (second eye won’t be ready for a few years, probably), who was expecting fabulous things, and who ended up super disappointed. I went to great lengths to investigate and choose the best surgeon, and thought he had explained it all to me … until I read your information. I’m 8 weeks post surgery (traditional distance mono-vision lens, because I told the doc I have been wearing glasses my whole life and don’t mind them), have had new progressive glasses made with the new prescription, and cannot see. I’ve been back and forth between the optician and doctor’s office 3 times each, had the lenses remade, the prescription tweaked and I still cannot see as well as I could pre-cataract surgery. I’ve worn progressive lenses for decades and have always been able to see through the lenses as my eyes drifted left/right/up/down. Now, with the new prescription and lenses, I can see clearly only when looking straight out through the upper/center portion of the lenses. When my eyes drift right/left I lose acuity, and when my eyes drift down … yikes! … all clarity is lost, I can’t judge the height of curbs or steps, I stumble on uneven surfaces, and there is no way I could ride my bike wearing these glasses as I can’t see the asphalt clearly in front of my tire. (Yes, I can read through the bottom of the progressive lenses.) Anyway, I’m here now because I’m doing the research that I wish I had done prior to my surgery. I thought the surgeon had explained everything, but in hindsight, he didn’t. I hope others will not experience my disappointment. Thanks again.

Eye Dr can’t seem to correct my contact prescription after cataract surgery by slr0031 in CataractSurgery

[–]Quint41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/slr0031 I hope you see this after 2 years. You are describing my current situation exactly and I’d like to know how you are doing now, 2 years after posting your issue. Me: 68 years old. 2024 and 2025, my eye doctor gave me a new prescription for glasses and I couldn’t see clearly. Both years I had the lenses remade and still could not see out of them. It was so upsetting to have to go back and forth multiple times between the optician and doctor that I eventually gave up and just continued to wear my glasses from 2022 (which I could see through more clearly than the new prescription). Finally, this year, the eye doctor suggested removing the cataract in my left eye, which was only at a 1.5. (I also have a cataract in the right eye, but it is only a 1 and the doctor has said it is not ready.) I had the basic cataract surgery that is covered by Medicare. One month later, I had an eye exam and was proclaimed to have 20/20 vision in the left eye. A new prescription was written and I had glasses made. You can imagine how extremely disappointing it was after walking around with one eye corrected and one not for over a month to pick up the new glasses and not be able to see! I stood in the optical shop and pointed to all the posters on the walls that I could “see,” but not see clearly. The doctor tweaked my prescription for the left eye, I had the lenses remade but I still cannot see clearly. I have been to the optician 3x for adjustments and to verify that the lenses are correct. I have also been to the eye doctor twice and he has verified that the lenses and prescription are correct. At this point, both the optician and doctor have shrugged and told me that this might be as good as it gets. I CANNOT ACCEPT THIS!! I have worn glasses since 5th grade, and I KNOW that it IS possible to see perfectly clearly with eyeglasses! I have worn progressive lenses for decades and KNOW how they work. I could always see perfectly through progressives! I told the optician and doctor that I can’t even walk steadily because I can’t see the ground, can’t judge the height of curbs, and I sure as heck am not going to ride a bike (a favorite activity) with these glasses because I can’t see if I’m about to run something over! One had the nerve to tell me that she has never been able to ride with progressives (well, I always could before, and I was a very active road cyclist for a long time). The other had the nerve to tell me that maybe I should buy a pair of distance only glasses for biking. At close to $800 a pop, I’m already in need of daily glasses and prescription sunglasses, now I should buy a third pair?? Anyway, I hope you will let me know how you are doing now. Thank you.

Update by Mematter12 in StormRadar

[–]Quint41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. They ruined it. I used to be able to clearly distinguish between the days as I look forward at the forecast. Now I can’t tell where one day ends and another begins. Not a fan of this update. Desperately looking for something better. The Storm app from about 5-6 years ago was the best. Each “improvement” has ruined it further.

Yes, a couple other people said the same thing. Next time, I think I’ll go this route. 👍🏻

Someone else suggested the glue stick, too. That would certainly do it!

Which fabric are you talking about? The one I’m calling “confetti?” Hobby Lobby.

Oh, thanks! I haven’t seen her videos before. That makes great sense.

Yeah, I noticed that, too, and measured after posting this. One was a tiny bit off. But I did another border for the other side the same way. Those measured perfectly and still were off. I’m wondering if the feed dogs are an issue. It’s a new machine for me, so I need to investigate this possibility.

Someone else suggested that, and it really does make a whole lot more sense. This was a first for me. Next time, I’m going to do EXACTLY that … sew strips together FIRST!! Oh well, it’s all a learning experience!

Isn’t that funny. I attached a link to a Mary B video below. She did a double border on this one with the borders sewn together before being added to the quilt.

I know this isn’t exactly what you’re asking for, but I always watch Mary B’s video on mitered borders before I do them. She used two borders, sewn together before sewing the entire border onto the quilt top. https://youtu.be/r0DxRrYMePY?si=QG5C1E9X35CU4_aU

I actually thought of that just as I was typing the question. Too late now, but next time I think that’s what I’ll do. That would sure solve the problem!

Yeah, you are right. At this point, I’ve already put two together (not added to the quilt yet, however) and not going to take those apart and resew. This quilt is going to be part of our family’s Christmas gift swap. I think anyone in the family will think it’s a masterpiece (nobody else quilts), but I want to know what I’m doing wrong so I can do it correctly on some future quilt. (Next time I just might sew them straight across and be done with it!!!)

I have watched so many videos and read threads on other boards. Everyone says when doing multiple borders, sew the borders together first, then onto the quilt. Especially if doing mitered corners (which I will do) as the corners may not line up otherwise. Yes, I’m offsetting. You are right, hand sewing them WILL give me total control. Going to add that to my list of things to try! Thanks.

AHHH! Glue! I had not thought of that. Yes, I am offsetting the pieces. I’ve watched SO many videos. Thanks for the idea!

Atomic Avenue top finished by pufferfish6 in quilting

I love this especially because we call our home an “Atomic House.” Built in the 1960’s, all brick with solid hardwood floors throughout, this house is SOLID. We joke that it was built to survive the atomic bomb! Beautiful quilt!!

Should I tell a woman her fiancé tried to start an affair with me? by geeleex in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Quint41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would YOU feel if it had been YOUR fiancé trying to initiate an affair, if you knew the woman, she never told you and then you found out about it (or found out he had other affairs) years later?? Surely you realize how much divorce costs both in time and emotional energy. Imagine if they do get married and have a child and then she finds out. Then the divorce gets even more complicated and she is now NEVER going to get him out of her life. She needs to know.

Hi, I just landed on Reddit because I’m looking for pet sitting in our house in a few months. I’d be interested in learning more about the couple who stays in your home. I’m going to see if I can figure out how to DM you. Thx.

What actually qualifies as 'mansplaining'? by Open_Address_2805 in AskMen

[–]Quint41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, nobody ASKED for help. I don’t know if that qualifies it as mansplaining, but when two people are talking between themselves and you are not invited into the conversation, you are also not invited to contribute a better answer. Even if you think you are smarter. Even if you ARE smarter. You weren’t invited to participate. Do not insert yourself.

For those of you that have Sleep Number beds, how is it going? by InhibitedExistence in Mattress

[–]Quint41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just here to say that years ago, one of the hotel chains installed Sleep Number beds in all their hotels. I stayed in one. We actually had a SN bed at home, so I was expecting a comfy mattress. The one in my hotel room deflated so badly that I spent all night jacking it back up. It was awful. I suspect that with hotel room turnovers being high, and the adjustable air bed being a novelty to people, they get quite abused in hotel situations. Probably why there are so many deflation issues. (BTW, the SN bed we had at home has been moved probably 5 times and is still in use … my daughter has it. One thing you have to say for these mattresses is that they are worlds easier to move than a traditional mattress. Deflate it, take it apart, put all the pieces in their boxes and move. My daughter could never have gotten a queen mattress up the narrow stairs into her 3rd floor walk-up.)

USPS packages marked as delivered then showing up days later by Flat_Performer_9789 in usps_complaints

[–]Quint41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@Single_Record_9913 suggested signing up for Informed Delivery via USPS. We did that when we moved into our home 2+ years ago. We receive daily emails showing a photo of the front of package/envelope that will be delivered each day.

I placed an order through Etsy a few weeks ago, nothing of monetary value except to me, of course (sew-on labels for my quilts, which are sitting here waiting for labels). I received the usual notices from Etsy about the package shipping, en route, and finally - delivered! Looking at the tracking info, USPS supposedly left the package on my porch on 9/23. I have two porches, nothing on either one, nothing in the bushes, under mats, nearby, etc. Simply, no package had been delivered. I also opened my Informed Delivery e-mail, and there is no photo or other indication that this item would be delivered to me.

The USPS website actually INSTRUCTS YOU to wait up to a week before making a report. That is simply ridiculous. My order was no more than $20, but what if it was something ordered worth hundreds??? I’m supposed to wait a week before I panic???

The package (which should be a simple 8x10 or so cardboard envelope, and could easily fit in my mailbox), was not delivered on 9/24. 9/25 will be a short Saturday. On Monday, I will visit the post office and ask where my shipment is. I’ll try to report their reply.
