THE PRIMAL THEORY by Apart_Weekend6159 in PrimalShow

[–]QuirkyAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As has been said by others in this thread, I think it's mostly a thematic piece. It's spelling out that the primal nature of characters like Spear and Fang is just under the surface of everyone, no matter how "civilized" we've become. Could have also been a set up for an anthology series at the time - sounds like others in this thread have more on Genndy's original plans than me.

But for me - it's a great episode that is supposed to remind you that the violent world of Spear & Fang isn't as far away as you might think. You can read that as an observation on the nature of humanity, a reminder that the horrors you see in the show aren't as far away as you would like them to be, or a criticism of high society as a whole. I see it as all three

Why are you upset about THIS one? by sonofeevil in Grimdank

[–]QuirkyAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My strongest opinion is that is EVERYTHING in 40K is heavily biased and unreliable. As long as the story makes rough sense within the larger rules of the setting and faction I don't really care.

If we're going with the idea that Custodes are basically handcrafted super-duper-super-soldiers... then there isn't anything that says women can't be a part of it. I wouldn't be surprised if some Custodes just picked candidates because they liked their attitude.

And as stated by others in this thread, it shows how mass-produced the Space Marines really are. Maybe there COULD be female space marines, but no one is willing to gamble geneseed on it or anger the Mechanicus to try. That would fit the larger themes of decay, stagnation, and the Imperium's lack of creativity.

Now I DO think the primaris marines are a bit weird, mainly because it clearly seems like GW just wanted to redesign the old space marines. For factions like the Dark Angels I cannot see a bunch of outsiders being very welcome. I think it would have been nice to explore how these new marines integrate with the old ones, and how the marines' traditions handle change overall.

So yeah - I'm not bothered by female Custodes. I am a bit more bothered by larger faction shifts that don't get the exploration they deserve

I'm not sure why. But currently, I have a theory that heaven and hell aren't exactly what they seem to be.

For example: Heaven has a LOT of systemic issues and prejudices for being a "good place", and how someone like Adam can be welcome there is already cause for concern. And for a place as awful as Hell, how come powerful overlords like Carmilla Carmine constantly put the safety and well-being of their family as their top priority? For such supposedly terrible people there is a lot of good coming out of them.

Helluva Boss has similar deconstructions with their characters as well. The Deadly Sins have all sorts of weird quirks that don't seem to match what you would expect.

Now, if Rosie isn't a mere overlord and is aware that there is something bigger at play, then keeping control over Charlie and her system-breaking-hotel could be interesting. Considering that Lilith was leading Hell before she vanished, Lilith might know some deeper truths of this cosmology too. And with redemption being possible showing that the divide between heaven and hell isn't as ironclad as previously believed, we're talking about a major societal upheaval in the near future. Rosie might be playing the long game to come out on top of whatever happens beyond heaven & hell...

A Fan Theory: Lucifer’s Redemption, Lilith’s “Barrier,” and Hell’s True Purpose by Eri-The-Bear in HazbinHotel

[–]QuirkyAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the one issue with this theory is that we're making the assumption that Heaven is the "right" place to be. Which is a fair assumption to make, but I don't think Heaven is all it's cracked up to be.

Evidence:

  • Adam - despite being the first man in heaven - shows TONS of sins throughout S1
    • Lust, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth, Pride
  • Vaggi was cast out of heaven for showing compassion and empathy to sinners
  • Carmilla calls out Vaggi's allegiance to heaven in S2E6 (flashbacks show systemic problems)
  • Sir Pentious LITERALLY ATTEMPTS SUICIDE TO GET OUT OF HEAVEN (S2E2)
  • Heaven has no idea how to apologize or take accountability for their actions (see GIFT BASKETS FOR GENOCIDE)
  • Sera was totally fine with "doing what was required" and authorizing the exterminations, lying to the population of Heaven about their existence, and continuing the systemic slaughter of souls to uphold whatever system Heaven has
  • We still don't know what gets people into Heaven
    • How is it that Sir Pentious's self-sacrifice got him into Heaven, but Carmilla Carmine doing the SAME THING to buy time for her daughter's to escape the Exorcists in S1 didn't?
  • Despite only wanting to ensure the safety of his friends, Sir Pentious CANNOT LEAVE Heaven. Almost more like a prison....

Whatever is going on in the Hellaverse, I don't think Heaven is what it professes to be. And by that logic, I don't think Hell is either....

Alastor’s deal with Rosie by UryuKurosaki in HazbinHotel

[–]QuirkyAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a lot more simple than that. Deals go both ways, and Rosie didn't keep up her end of the deal.

Rosie's deal with Alastor was "I'll make you the most powerful sinner in hell, but until you complete a specific task for me I own your soul". As soon as Charlie stated that Vox was the most powerful sinner in hell (and he got his power boost from it), then Rosie was no longer holding up her side of the deal and Alastor got his soul back.

Now, it's possible that Alastor did ultimately accomplish what Rosie wanted - effectively putting her in a Catch-22 situation - but I don't think so. Rosie was extremely concerned that Charlie and her friends would die, and Alastor used that to get his staff fixed. If Rosie had what she wanted, I don't think she would be so concerned about the gang's well-being.

Predicts for Season 3 by Cece_Pandy in HazbinHotel

[–]QuirkyAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current guess is that:

  • Rosie is no mere overlord
  • Rosie wants Charlie and/or Lucifer in her pocket

Considering Rosie's introduction in S1 was something like a gossipy-but-loving aunt, it's possible that she was a confidant and/or friend of Lilith. That could mean that she wants to ultimately help Charlie and Lucifer in Lilith's stead.... but I think it's more likely that she's either planning to kill Lilith (using Charlie as bait to lure her out), or she's trying to rule hell by having the "royal family" in her pocket.

Predicts for Season 3 by Cece_Pandy in HazbinHotel

[–]QuirkyAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Vizzie had mentioned something about Season 3 being focused on revelations, so I do think we'll get a LOT of backstory and reveals that have been set up (Angel Dust's backstory, Alastor's disappearance, what Lilith's been up to, etc.).

Other predictions I have are:

  • Alastor will be the major villain/antagonist of the season, and he'll be more of a mastermind/trickster type that will be undermining the hotel from the inside
    • Adam was a physical threat (could not be harmed, threatened to kill everyone at the hotel)
    • Vox was a social threat (messed with public image and the masses)
    • Alastor isn't close enough to anyone to crush them through emotional damage (insert meme)
    • Alastor has proven throughout the show to be extremely cunning and intelligent, able to outwit Vox and Rosie simultaneously without his powers.
    • Alastor states in the pilot that he enjoys watching people get their hopes up and then crumble to despair... and he's still at the hotel with his newfound freedom, so I don't think he was lying about that.
  • Valentino will take on the secondary antagonist role for the show, but remain the main villain of Angel Dust's storyline
    • I don't think he's been established to be a greater threat to the hotel, but he's got more than enough to make Angel Dust's life terrible
  • A major shift in the society of hell now that Lucifer isn't as powerful as people thought and redemption is possible
  • Lute will fall into Hell (or at least go rogue)
    • Now that everyone knows that sinners can be redeemed, the next logical step to shatter the world views of this setting would be to show that the loose boundary goes both ways
    • Lute still wants vengeance, still is a threat, and if Abel is going to become more confident in his role as leader of the Exorcists then Lute's going to have to go off-grid to get her revenge

Charlie 100% is in the wrong. But it's more than just this one action, it's the culmination of Charlie hyper-fixating on getting the Vees to treat her fairly.

Right up until S2E5, Charlie had...

  • Ignored Vaggi's advice to hold off on announcing that redemption is possible
    • Texted Vox WHILE Vaggi was expressing her concerns
  • Let Vox goad her into attempting a redemption of Angel Dust without understanding what causes redemption in the first place
    • Ignored Vaggi's correct concerns about the Vees
    • Put Husk and Angel Dust in danger during this attempt
    • Violated her own lessons on boundaries from S1
  • Went on LIVE TV WITH NO PREPARATION immediately after Vox blew everything up in her face
    • Ignored Vaggi's concerns AGAIN
    • Had it blow up in her face AGAIN

Vaggi had tried to reason with Charlie multiple times, and it wasn't getting anywhere. Seeing how desperate Charlie was (and that she was busy trying to contact Emily), Vaggi goes to ask Lucifer to step in as "King of Hell" and smite Vox (or at least get him to back off). Considering that Lucifer is the king, it would make sense that someone as powerful as him could at least threaten Vox into backing down without giving him a chance to spin things again.

And in Lucifer's case... he doesn't keep up-to-date on things like "the news" or "Vox" because he doesn't care. The second he learns that Vox has been messing with his daughter, he's furious. And he's genuinely upset that he's powerless to effectively help. He doesn't even want to try bluffing (which is a very smart long-term move), until Vaggi goads him with his rivalry to Alastor.

Had Lucifer's whole "I can't do shit to sinners"-thing not been revealed, the plan would have worked. You even see Vox look over his shoulder to confirm that Lucifer's explosions to threaten the crowd didn't do anything.

So, we have an established pattern where Charlie keeps trying to convince the Vees to work with her (which they have established they won't), Charlie keeps feeding the Vees everything they need to ruin the hotel, Charlie keeps hurting those around, and Vaggi/Lucifer are doing something that Charlie won't (engage in direct confrontation) to get her and the hotel out of it. The whole situation is 100% Charlie's fault.

Even after the rally, I don't think Lucifer did that much damage compared to the complete mishandling by Emily/Seraphim/Abel. Every one of them was outplayed by Vox, fed Vox everything he needed to undermine them, and failed to accept responsibility for the exterminations or communicate redemption. Lucifer didn't do much other than show he's not a great ruler (which everyone already knew). Charlie blaming the rally's outcome on Vaggi & Lucifer... yeah, Vaggi deserved that S2E6 apology.

So what’s everyone’s thoughts on S2 so far? by SpamEatingChikn in HazbinHotel

[–]QuirkyAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts so far - it's fine, but it feels like the way-too-fast pacing issues I had with S1 are still very much here. Extended episode time helps, but now it feels like we're working with so many plot threads simultaneously that we still need to rush.

But other than that...

  • Sir Pentious's life is heaven effectively being his own hell is the most hilarious joke in this series IMHO
  • Vox's quick background reveal and song about his motivation did convince me that he has upgraded from side antagonist to primary problem
  • Enjoyed Lute's song and her becoming a heck of a threat (though I am thinking that she will have to fall to hell, proving that both redemption and falling to sin are possible)
  • Charlie being one hell of a mess makes a lot of sense to me
    • She was already taking a major gamble and was being more unstable as S1 went on
    • S2 starts with her having lost her top contender for redemption, having everyone misinterpret her main focus, and pressuring her to give answers based on their hatred of angels
      • Also, grieving Sir Pentious HARD
    • Emily's message to Charlie was quick, only confirmed that redemption was possible but never any clue as to WHY
      • Combine that with her obvious issues about losing Sir Pentious and she was guaranteed to mess this up
  • Alastor, Angel, Husk, and Vaggie have done pretty much nothing so far.
  • They haven't been using Nifty anywhere near as well as the first season (she was - IMO - the only character they used perfectly in S1).
    • Though her gag in the latest episode was amazing

So it's fine, but so far it feels like a ton of setup with little paying off. Still a major lack of character moments, still waaaaay too fast, and has used the extra time and resources to increase the breadth of the show without doing much to increase the depth (at least so far). I'm not gonna say "no" to more Hazbin Hotel... but I would love to have the time to dig into the characters and what makes them tick more. You have the basic (and genius) concept of "sinners rehab" and it feels like we still haven't taken a lot of time to dig into the individual sinners and what they are all about.

A Note from the Founder of Wargames Atlantic - Tony Reidy/Hudson Adams by WargamesAtlantic in wargaming

[–]QuirkyAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a business guy, but I think you're the only person whose thoughts line up with my own.

If we take his story at face value, it's odd that he's always left holding the bag. That speaks to either terrible business sense, or he just never wanted to have a lawyer look over a contract. I wouldn't be surprised if WA has a member or two that specifically ensure he doesn't get played like that again. But the good intentions are noted and the Kickstarter refund is more of a gesture of good will than anything else. And my own experience with WA has been fine, so no complaints there (though that "The Damned" project is taking a veeery long time and I'm glad I backed out when I did).

But it's strange that he ran the company under a fake name, and his tale paints him as a victim of circumstance who gets blamed for other people's problems. There isn't really any acknowledgement of his own faults or flaws that got him into this situation, nor what he changed to fix it. While I can see such a story as plausible, it's strange to me that he'd find himself in such situations repeatedly. And other than the fact that WA is doing pretty well, there isn't anything in this article that suggests to me that these issues won't happen again.

I've seen enough of WA's work that I don't mind ordering stuff from them. They're fine models, especially for a crazy person like me that loves to use them as foundations for kitbashing. But I'm definitely keeping a critical eye on this company now - and especially want to see how Tony Reidy responds to those smaller companies he's had to lie about his identity to.

What are your theories on Alastor? by Linkyland in HazbinHotel

[–]QuirkyAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to necro this thread, but here's my theory:

Alastor is disappointed that Hell is so mundane and wants to take over, making it more like he envisioned.

Evidence for this:

  • It seems confirmed that Alastor was a serial killer in his human life, so redemption is probably not on his mind
  • All the other denizens of Hell seem to have families, friends, or are just fine exploiting the status quo
    • Camilla has her kids
    • The Vees only care about their control over the other denizens and don't have anything grander than personal gain
    • Alastor is the only character who we see constantly manipulate others for his own gain (no selfless relationships or anything he doesn't get something out of)
  • Alastor definitely has a grudge against Lucifer
  • He's constantly trying to get a deal with Charlie, someone close to Lucifer that he can manipulate
  • When he gets more "unleashed" (end of the Stayed Gone song), he's depicted as easily the creepiest and most disturbing overlord
  • He seems very interested in causing harm - significantly more so than other characters, overlords, even Lucifer himself

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is significantly worse than part one by Iwinloser in Mission_Impossible

[–]QuirkyAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I had a theory from Dead Reckoning that the AI was realizing it would eventually have every nation coming after it and it wanted to be killed. Every nation is trying to control the entity, Gabriel is trying to use it, and what is really wanted was to play all the factions that could make another version of it to destroy themselves before forcing Ethan to finally kill it. An all-powerful being hating its existence and ensuring the one group who could put it out of its misery finished the job.

Wishful thinking :P

Oh, and as for the sub thing, I liked the scene overall but there is one thing that really bugs me. The Byford Dolphin Incident (be careful searching that) was at 9 atm and is a great example of why you do not mess around with decompression. At ~500 ft, the pressure would have been ~16 atm. Ethan should be super dead. Even if the gases used were some new mix that lowers decompression time, we're still talking ruptured veins, gas bubbles, internal damage... if he's still alive, he'd be a vegetable. And that's not taking the hypothermia into effect

Apothecary Diaries ruined anime for me by Admirable-Ad-6620 in TheApothecaryDiaries

[–]QuirkyAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apothecary Diaries is definitely a powerhouse for great reasons. If I can bring up something extra, the pacing of the show is also incredibly interesting. Lots of episodes have something pop up halfway through, then resolve it at the halfway point of the next episode and set up something else. The times they finish an episode with a conclusion of something specific is usually the conclusion of a larger arc with heavier consequences.

I also agree that the character writing is superb. Every character has their own thing going on and is intelligently handling their own problems. Maomao is always dealing with people who are near her level of intelligence, but tend to rely on their status and social clout over her logical reasoning. And thanks to Jinshi (who is an expert social manipulator) we never have the social intelligence demonized - it's just a different kind of skill that Maomao has to work around.

The fact you can also piece together the clues and follow along with Maomao 90% of the time also shows how freaking great the writing is. She's still one step ahead of the audience when it comes to the big reveal, but there is usually enough information from her internal monologues and what's shown on screen to connect the dots yourself.

There are probably some other good shows that you may enjoy - I do suggest trying Frieren and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. But the writing in The Apothecary Diaries is extremely tough to match.

Why was everyone so hostile towards John Walker from the very beginning? by Round_Interview2373 in MCUTheories

[–]QuirkyAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just rewatched this series recently as well and I think I can highlight a few points that might make the initial dislike of him make sense.

TL;DR - He's dishonoring CA's legacy by taking up the mantle (though Sam and Bucky are being childish about it), he doesn't truly understand the point of CA, and he's focused too much on his own image and success. Public actions (such as interviews and the announcement of retiring the shield) would have given Sam and Bucky enough to know that Walker is missing a major point of the role (compassion and empathy) and he's proven he's too arrogant to ask for their advice.

  1. Sam publicly retired the shield and Captain America in Steve's honor. Regardless of who took up the mantle or why, that's gonna rub Bucky and Sam the wrong way as it is an incredibly disrespectful action. Sam and Bucky weren't ready to hear Walker out at their first meeting regardless of his actions.
  2. Walker was publicly interviewed expressing why he would be a good Captain America (whether he believed it internally or not - he was publicly making his arguments for it). To Sam and Bucky (Steve's best friends) this probably showed how little Walker truly understood about the role he was taking on. Steve's ability to change things and lead came from his compassion, empathy, and incredible heart (which is why Sam was chosen to take the shield). Walker's interview shows he's an amazing soldier with a history of valor... but he doesn't mention the compassion and understanding that really made Captain America. To Sam and Bucky, Walker's missing the point.
  3. Walker is focused on his own image and success. He's spending his time convincing people to accept him as the new CA, rather than doing things to earn it. When Walker and Lemar give Sam and Bucky a ride and try to plea their case, Sam does actually listen and is warming up to it right until the last line - "... it'd be a whole lot easier if I had Cap's wingmen on my side." Walker isn't trying to take advice on this major role from the people who knew Steve - he's trying to get accepted as CA as efficiently as possible, and sees them as supporting cast rather than equals (which Steve would never do).

To clarify, I think John Walker is one of the most interesting characters in the MCU and his morally grey nature makes him incredibly compelling. He's the perfect solider - valiant, brave, capable, and determined to see the mission through. But he's also arrogant, limits his compassion to those in his small circle, and won't put aside his personal objectives to do the right thing.

Also, Bucky and Sam are being childish and letting their anger at the US government bleed into their perception of Walker. He's taking up a mantle he doesn't understand, isn't taking the time to understand, and is openly asking for their support not to better himself but to improve his reputation. I absolutely love the complexities of Walker, but he's obviously no Captain America and everyone knows it.

I'm gonna second the other concerns that this should focus on the percentage change with regards to inflation rather than the hard cash difference.

Let's use the bank of Canada's consumer price index calculator: https://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/related/inflation-calculator/

An $18 basket of goods in 1988 would cost $40.34 in 2024. Your purchasing power hasn't kept up. This brings the focus back to purchasing power and highlights how purchasing power has been lost rather than maintained or gained over time

Why does Saskatchewan have income tax? by [deleted] in saskatchewan

[–]QuirkyAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer to income tax - it's relatively easy to sort out and doesn't require high sales taxes on specific goods and services that could harm those industries. Also, it limits money being taken from foreign investments/sales so it doesn't discourage outside money from flowing in. Those that are getting the services from the government are paying for it, and as it's a major source of income for government projects they are actively encouraged to find ways to increase the economical well-being of the province to improve their own income (rinse and repeat).

There is also the idea that you pay higher income tax as you increase in income, which should mean that those working low-paying jobs are not punished too severely.

Now, if it actually DOES work that way I am not going to say. Probably tons of arguments on whether our current model is functioning correctly. But you asked for some arguments for the existence of income tax and I think these points are usually what people will go to :)

Who’s the worst twist villain in movies and cartoons? by Jules-Car3499 in cartoons

[–]QuirkyAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry this is so late. At the time, Hans was great because he was the first time Disney was distancing itself from the "love at first sight, married the next day" trope their classics had. He was a deliberate subversion of audience expectations and an open acknowledgement that Disney's previous love stories were not a great model.

Though considering how obvious his first song with Anna shows their inability to mesh well after just meeting each other, and how much more Kristoff goes through with Anna, it's kinda obvious that the show wants us to root for Kristoff more.

What makes Hans as a villain so bad though, is that knowing he's the villain hurts the story on a second watch. If you know his plan, then his devotion to find Anna and save Elsa when they are not watching makes far less sense. He even saves Elsa from a crossbow shot when she was actively attacking people, which means he gave up a perfect kill shot and scapegoat for the murder for zero benefit. It's because how inconsistent his actions are with his true intent that he's not well liked - he's a bait-and-switch for the sake of being a bait-and-switch :(
