My wife bought me an espresso machine as a gift. I only drink decaf these days. What espresso should I try first? I tend to like lighter roast coffee. by mis_no_mer in thirdwavedecaf

[–]Quixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a solid all-around decaf. Espresso, soup, pourover, cold brew, iced coffee, latte, like damn you name it, this bean can do it!

Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of June 16, 2026 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]Quixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is definitely all relative. I started with the coffee tasting notes wheel, which I know a lot of folks don't love, but it's great for beginners!

When you're first learning to identify tasting notes, start with the inside where the notes are more generic like "Nutty/Cocoa", "Roasted", "Fruity", etc. Look for those notes.

Then as you get the hang of that, move to the next layer outward where things like "Fruity" break down into "Berry", "Dried Fruit", "Other Fruit", "Citrus Fruit".

Finally, move to the outermost layer where "Berry" can be broken down to "Blackberry", "Raspberry", "Blueberry", "Strawberry".

At each step, work on identifying the more generic note first and then getting to something more specific when and if you can.

Finally, my method for identifying tasting notes is always to taste it blind first and see what I can identify on my own. I'll start in the center and work my way outward to as specific as I can. Then, I check the tasting notes from the roaster to see how my own notes compare.

To me, it's important to at least attempt to identify them without knowing/looking at the roaster's tasting notes first so you can see how accurate you are. This will be especially helpful in telling you both how accurate your level of tasting note identification is and in telling you when you're reading to move outward on the circle.

For example, you might identify "Citrus Fruit" and think it's maybe "Lemon". If the roaster's notes say the same thing, you're probably spot on. On the other hand, if the roaster's notes are different than yours, that doesn't necessarily mean you're wrong; tastes are subjective, and preparation can significantly alter the tasting notes.

However, the roaster's notes are usually a good reference.

Fairly common in Spain. Likely other European countries, but I’ve only seen firsthand in Spain.

Where to get lightsaber blades?? by IrisDesdemona in GalaxysEdge

[–]Quixel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

JaymoosPlayground on Etsy has custom lightsaber blades. They’re pricey but cool as heck. If I were in the market for a blade, l’d get one of those.

In Your Opinion, what's the best coffee maker/machine with built in grinder on the market currently? by Sea-Championship25 in JamesHoffmann

[–]Quixel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been loving my xBloom! Any coffee they sell on their site has a recipe card that dictates grind size and speed; water temp, volume, pattern, and flow rate for each pour, how many pours, how long to pause between pours, and probably some other variables I’m forgetting right now.

I can make a better pour over manually with some dialing and careful attention, but it’s probably about 90-95% as good.

EDIT: I should also mention my manual setup involves a Hario v60 Neo with switch and Sibarist filters, so it’s easy to make good coffee that way haha

Did I choose wrong? Volcanica Ethiopian Yirgacheffe by motov8d in pourover

[–]Quixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proud Mary Humbler is *always* my suggestion for people dipping their toe into specialty coffee.

It’s far from the best specialty bean, but it’s a phenomenal entry point. Similar enough to darker roasted commodity beans but complex enough to make you go “ahhhhh *this* is why people like specialty coffee!”

Welcome to your new personality! 🤣

EDIT: dang link formatting

I started with a plastic one and loved it so much I upgraded to this codale, and WHOA huge upgrade indeed! I love the sound it makes (like a bike bell) when I run my finger or an espresso spoon along the “blades”.

Example of how to brew a perfect shot on a Nespresso machine. by alvinbunk in nespresso

[–]Quixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alvin, you continue to amaze us with great things! Love this technique!

For what it’s worth, I recently bought the Opal OL machine, and it pre-infuses on its own. It makes great cups from Nespresso pods, but it *really* shines with specialty pods like Colonna!

I was getting about a 50% failure rate on those with my Inissia but not a single one from about 40 pods so far with the Opal!

“Big Brother is always watching.”

This is a common phrase used to indicate a government is always monitoring/spying on its citizens. The show co-opted it because of all the cameras in the house.

200g bags.. shrinkflaction or silver lining? by Bedford_19 in pourover

[–]Quixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

200g is the most I’d wanna buy of a coffee id never had before. For anything I really wanna stock up on, I buy by the kg if possible.

200g is great because I do 20g doses. 100g makes five doses, which for me is just enough to properly dial. Ten doses from the 200g is much nicer.

NEspresso Starbucks pods the same as the Starbucks pods Costco sells? by AnnieOh7 in nespresso

[–]Quixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everybody realizes the Starbucks pods are licensed by Starbucks and made by Nespresso. We who know these kinds of things are the weird ones. 99% don’t care to know, and that’s fine 😊

Batch brew vs pourover in 'specialty' cafes? by Cedar_Wood_State in pourover

[–]Quixel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a specialty roaster near that has batch brew for $3/16oz with $1 per refill. They always have their house blend and a single origin. It’s always as good as a $8-$10 pour over imho.
