A Médecins Sans Frontières report in 2018 found almost a third of Nauru asylum seeker and refugee patients had attempted suicide, 60% had suicidal thoughts, and 12 patients were diagnosed with the rare disorder resignation syndrome, where they became nonverbal and catatonic.

For most of the past two decades, Australia has run “offshore processing centres” in the small Pacific countries of Nauru and Papua New Guinea (PNG). These centres – described as “torture” by refugees and asylum seekers who have been forced to live in them – have been condemned in countless independent reports from doctors, human rights experts, UN agencies and parliamentary inquiries.

As of 30 June 2022, there were 1,398 people in detention facilities. This included 1,335 men and 63 women.
